From the Editor

Yes, this newsletter is very late.  I started working on it while we were parked at Tom Steed Lake but didn’t get it finished before we left there to return to Virginia.  We really didn’t want to send the newsletter out over our wireless hotspot so thought it best to send it out once we were back home.  Well, needless to say, after being gone from home for 3 weeks, we had many things that needed attention when we returned.

Virginia had lots of rain while we were gone.  Mike poured 5 ½ inches out of our gauge—not sure if that is all we got or if some had gone over the top as 5 ½ inches is all the gauge will hold.  We woke up the first morning home to find water on the carpet in our bedroom—yes, we had a leaking roof.  Fortunately, it wasn’t a big leak and waited until we returned to decide to come all the way through the sheetrock.  Again, fortunately, Karen “knew a guy” who is a roofer and he came that afternoon to check it out.  Now, Mike had already been in the attic to put a bucket under the leak so that no more water would come through the ceiling.  Mike says we are lucky that he was able to crawl out of that tight attic space as he thought he was going to have to call for help getting out.  I think he thought I might have to bring him food up there for a while.  Don’t think I could have reached him where he was.  Anyway, the roof is getting new sheeting and shingles today so all should be good for a while.  Mike has spent time working in the yard blowing leaves off the newly growing grass.  And, yes we have unloaded some things from the RV but there is still more to do.  We are taking that a little at a time.  We just need to have it all out so that we can get the RV to the shop for a state inspection and oil change by the end of the month.  Then, it will be off to storage until next spring.

Our trip to Oklahoma was great.  On the way we enjoyed a great visit with Jim and Val Harvey who now live in Franklin, TN.  Brother Jim was the minister at the Roosevelt First Baptist Church from 1959 to 1963.  Mike hadn’t seen them since they left Roosevelt so they had lots of catching up to do.  Mike so enjoyed the visit and I was so glad to meet them.  We are sorry to report that we had a note from Brother Jim telling us that Val had fallen while walking at the Y and fractured her pelvis.  Mike talked to Brother Jim this morning to check up on her.  We are praying for a quick recovery for Val and know that they would also appreciate prayers from those of you who know them..

Now, I took my slow easy time getting to Oklahoma—something I have never done before.  We took 4 ½ days to make the 1435 miles.  That sounds like a long time but driving that 35 foot RV towing a car is a more tiring trip than driving a car.  The wind and the heavy traffic particularly the semi-trucks don’t make it any easier.  I will definitely be traveling slower in the future as I enjoyed the trip so much more.

We so enjoyed our time parked at Tom Steed.  What a difference since the last time we visited.  Yes, there is lots of water in the lake.  The sunsets were spectacular.  We so enjoyed being able to see the lunar eclipse while there.  We have too many trees where we live in Virginia and rarely get to see these events.

We had lots of good times visiting with my brother, Kenneth, Cathy, and Amber.  We were so glad to be able to go to the Altus DAV event and hear Amber sing.  We rarely ever are there when she is performing.  She does a great job.  We both had cousins visit us from different parts of Texas.

Then we both enjoyed attending the Roosevelt High School Reunion.  As always, Mike saw some he hadn’t seen in years.  He always so enjoys catching up with everyone.  I have made so many new friends over the years as we have attended the reunion.  We are so glad to be able to connect again.  Mike was concerned hoping that he didn’t miss seeing or talking to someone because he didn’t recognize them due to his vision issues.  The last thing he wants is for someone to think that he “high hated” them when he simply couldn’t recognize them.

On our trip back to Virginia, we stopped in Knoxville, TN, to visit friends who were in graduate school at Kansas State with Mike.  We had a great visit with them.  Then Larry Sorrell contacted Mike to say he only lived a few miles off I-40 in eastern Tennessee and that he would like to meet us for breakfast if we had time to stop.  Of course, we had time—that is what this trip was about—visiting those we hadn’t seen in a while.  In this case, it had been 50 years.  Mike and Larry had a great time visiting and we plan to meet up with him again in the near future.

We are so thankful that we were able to make this trip and that God provided safe travels for us.  We are glad to be home again even if we do have our fall yard work to get done.  I’m already thinking about where I would like to go on our next trip.

Oh yes, before closing, I need to report that Mike went back to the eye doctor today and again there was no fluid behind his macula.  We continue to pray that it stays clear so that he doesn’t have to have more shots.  However, it is just good to know that the shots do clear it up when it does come.

Remembering

Editor’s Note:  I am again challenging each of you to send us memories you have of your early days or to tell us what you have been doing since you finished high school.  I had some talk to be about this at the reunion and said they would really enjoy hearing about their former classmates.  So please send us your memories or “where you have been” so we can share with everyone.  cnm

Thoughts from the Squirrel Lair

I’ve Made It This Far

I’ve learned from life that sometimes, the darkest times can bring us to the brightest places. That our most painful struggles can grant us the most necessary growth; and that the most heartbreaking losses of friendship and love can make room for the most wonderful people.

I’ve learned that what seems like a curse at the moment can actually be a blessing, and that what seems like the end of the road is actually just the discovery that we are meant to travel down a different path.

I’ve learned that no matter how difficult things seem, there is always hope. And I’ve learned that no matter how powerless we feel or how horrible things seem, we can’t give up. We have to keep going. Even when it’s scary, even when all of our strength seems gone, we have to keep picking ourselves back up and moving forward, because whatever we’re battling in the moment, it will pass, and we will make it through.

We’ve made it this far. We can make it through whatever comes next.

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Cooperton Valley Picture Trail

The “Cooperton Valley” Picture Trail site has been renewed for all to enjoy.  Thanks to Karen (Johnson) Mason for funding this site for the coming year.  This site has many pictures from past Cooperton School reunions.  We hope that you will find these photos interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past (or if you have and wondered where it went).  Go to http://www.picturetrail.com/coopertonvalley to visit the site.

Interesting Tidbits

Think You Can Hide in a Large Crowd???  Not Anymore

Ever wonder how they found the Boston bombers in just a few days?  This may help you to understand what the government is looking at.  This photo was taken in Canada and shows about 700,000 people.  Hard to disappear in a crowd.  Pick on a small part of the crowd and click a couple of times, wait, click a few more times and see how clear each individual face will become each time.  Or use the wheel on your mouse.  This picture was taken with a 70,000 x 30,000 pixel camera (2100 Mega Pixels).  These cameras are not sold to the public and are being installed in strategic locations.  The camera can identify a face among a multitude of people.  Place your computer’s cursor in the mass of people and double-click a couple times.  Scary sharp!!  Not so easy to hide in a crowd anymore.

Roosevelt High School Reunion

The Roosevelt High School Reunion was a rousing success in our opinion.  About 60 attended the Friday night mixer.  Several of those came from a good distance away just to attend that one night as they had conflicts and couldn’t stay for the Saturday events.  About 125 registered on Saturday.  We know that some missed signing in at the registration table.  Everyone enjoyed visiting throughout the day.  An enjoyable lunch of hamburgers and chicken sandwiches were available for purchase so no one had to leave to get food.  The dinner was catered by Klein’s BBQ.  The attendees were able to participate in a 50/50 raffle with half the proceeds going to the alumni whose ticket was drawn.  The other half went to the alumni fund.  There was also an auction which netted the alumni fund about $650.  Dan Hayslip and Gayla (Cook) Miller were elected to serve on the alumni committee for the next 4 years.  The earliest class represented was 1943.  Both Clyde Blackwood and Gerry Ankney from that class were in attendance.  Mike May was recognized for coming the greatest distance to attend the reunion.  However, he only out distanced Arden Beavers by 35 miles.  Arden says he is going to take a round about route the next reunion so he is the one coming the greatest distance.

For those of you who weren’t able to attend, you missed a fun time.  You need to mark the last week-end of September, 2017, on your calendar right now so that you have no conflicts.  Plan to attend and visit with your former classmates and friends.

And God Looked Down

Most seniors never get enough exercise:

In His wisdom God decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for their glasses, keys and other things thus doing more walking.

And God looked down and saw that it was good.

Then God saw there was another need.  In His wisdom He made seniors lose coordination so they would drop things requiring them to bend, reach & stretch.

And God looked down and saw that it was good.

Then God considered the function of bladders and decided seniors would have additional calls of nature requiring more trips to the bathroom, thus providing more exercise.

God looked down and saw that it was good.

So if you find as you age, you are getting up and down more, remember it is God's will.  It is all in your best interest even though you mutter under your breath.

Nine Important Facts To Remember As We Grow Older

#9 Death is the number 1 killer in the world.

#8 Life is sexually transmitted.

#7 Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.

#6 Men have 2 motivations:  hunger and hanky panky, and they can't tell them apart.  If you see a gleam in his eyes, make him a sandwich.

#5 Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day.  Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks, months, maybe years.

#4 *Health Nuts* are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing.

#3 All of us could take a lesson from the weather.  It pays no attention to criticism.

#2 In the 1960's, people took acid to make the world weird.  Now the world IS weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal.
