From the Editor

Well, this newsletter is a little late but we have been really busy here in Virginia the last week or so.  We enjoyed a visit from our son, Kevin, and family from Marietta, GA.  Karen and her family were over much of the time as well.  What fun we had having the entire family together.  We especially enjoyed having the three grandchildren together as Paige spent the entire time here.  There is some age difference between Paige and Raegan but they soon bonded and Raegan spent most of her time trying to imitate everything Paige did.  Parker is just all boy.  They all enjoyed lots of time in Papa’s swimming pool.  Aunt Karen took them bowling which they all enjoyed.  We just had good family time which is so important and so hard to do when we are so many miles apart.

The normal summer activities continue to keep us busy.  Mike always has lots of outdoor activity to keep him busy.  The swimming pool alone takes lots of time as the trees which surround it drop lots of leaves, acorns, etc., which need to be taken out.  The pool cleaner needs to be cleaned daily and the chemicals checked and added as needed.  Of course, there is yard work as well.

He has started working on getting the RV ready to hopefully camp with Karen, Mark, and Paige before school starts.  Then we plan to head to southwest Oklahoma in September in the RV.  We will spend a week or so at Tom Steed Lake visiting my brother and his family and attending the Roosevelt School Reunion.  Mike has plans to stop in Franklin, TN, on the way out or the way back and visit Jim and Val Harvey.  He has wanted to do this for some time and this is the trip we have decided we would do that.

We encourage all of our friends to make plans to attend the Roosevelt School Reunion.  The registration form is in the News Section below.  Print it off, complete it, and mail it in.  Plan to be there to enjoy a lot of visiting and catching up on old times.  Mike is really looking forward to it since this is 50 years since he graduated.  He hopes many of his classmates make an effort to be there.

Blackboards from 1917

Most of you may have seen the news about the blackboards uncovered in the school in Oklahoma City.  This is very interesting and shows how schooling has changed over the years.

Thoughts from the Squirrel Lair

A LITTLE COMMON SENSE FROM AN OLD COWBOY

Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.

Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.

Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.

A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.

Words that soak into your ears are whispered… not yelled.

Meanness don’t jes’ happen overnight.

Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads.

Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.

It don’t take a very big person to carry a grudge.

You cannot unsay a cruel word.

Every path has a few puddles.

When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.

The best sermons are lived, not preached.

Most of the stuff people worry about ain’t never gonna happen anyway.

Don’t judge folks by their relatives.

Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

Live a good, honorable life… Then when you get older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time.

Don‘t interfere with somethin’ that ain’t bothering you none.

Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a Rain dance.

If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin’.

Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.

The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with watches you from the mirror every mornin’.

Always drink upstream from the herd.

Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.

Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin’ it back in.

If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around.

Live simply.  Love generously.  Care deeply.  Speak kindly.  Leave the rest to God.

Don’t pick a fight with an old man.  If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you.

"Most times, it just gets down to common sense."

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Cooperton Valley Picture Trail

The “Cooperton Valley” Picture Trail site has been renewed for all to enjoy.  Thanks to Karen (Johnson) Mason for funding this site for the coming year.  This site has many pictures from past Cooperton School reunions.  We hope that you will find these photos interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past (or if you have and wondered where it went).  Go to http://www.picturetrail.com/coopertonvalley to visit the site.

Interesting Tidbits

It’s Just Like Riding a Bike

Ever hear that phrase "It's just like riding a bike?"  It turns out riding a bike isn't actually all that easy.

Take this bike, for example.  It looks like an ordinary bicycle but with one tiny difference.  You may think you can ride it, but I guarantee you're wrong.

Website for Alumni Information

The names and addresses of the alumni from the most recent information provided to the Alumni Association have been loaded on www.classreports.org.  Each alumna can go to this website, select Oklahoma and then Roosevelt and only Roosevelt High School will appear.  When you choose Roosevelt High School, it will bring up all the years for the classes but since we are an "all school" association, the entire database is loaded on 2009 so you need to click on that year.  Every alumna’s name, address and whether they are deceased is already in the database.  When logging on for the first time, the alumni will need to register using their email address as their user ID and create their own password.  This will get you logged in.  Next, you want to click on "Edit my Profile".  It will bring up your personal information.  Classreports will never show a person's street address and defaults to "no" on whether to display your city and state.  The alumni have to allow it to show that along with their email address.

We want to stress that is this is not a public website like classmates.com or facebook.  There are no ads, no spam, no pop ups and no fees.  They do not sell email addresses and your personal information is in no way compromised.  It is funded through personal donations and our class is fully funded through November 2015.  We encourage each and every Roosevelt alumni to go to the website, register, and check their profile information.  Please make any corrections so that we have the most up-to-date information on each of you.  This will certainly be helpful to the Alumni Association in getting information out about future reunions

Thanks,

REPRINTING PIONEERING BOOKS

The Kiowa County Historical Society has had so many inquiries and interest in Pioneering in Kiowa County, Volumes I and 2 that the board of directors has decided to reprint these two volumes.  The Historical Society is in the planning stages of having them reprinted and bound into hardbound books just like the original books.

As most know, these first two volumes have been out of print for many years.  Are you interested in buying these volumes?  If so, our pre-order cost estimate is $150 which would include Volumes 1 & 2.  This would be the discount amount. These volumes may cost a little more if you purchase them after reprinting.   Please call the Kiowa County Historical Museum at 580-726-6202 if interested.

Pioneering in Kiowa County, Volumes 3, 4, 5 and 6 are now available at the county museum at $15.00 per volume.

Editor’s Note:  The Museum doesn’t accept credit cards but you can mail them a check or money order to pay for the books if you are interested.  We have the complete set of books and know that our friends who grew up in Kiowa County would definitely enjoy them.  We have to thank Mike’s Mom, Gayle May, for getting those first two volumes for us when they first came out.  We added the remaining volumes when visiting the Museum several years ago.  cnm

Second Opinion

Ever since I was a child, I've always had a fear of someone under my bed at night, so I finally went to a shrink and told him "I've got problems.  Every time I go to bed I think there's somebody under my bed!!  I'm scared.  I think I'm going crazy."

"Just put yourself in my hands for one year", said the shrink.  "Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears."

"How much do you charge, I asked?"

"Eighty dollars per visit", replied the doctor.

"I'll sleep on it", I said.

Six months later the doctor met me on the street.  "Why didn't you come to see me about those fears you were having?" he asked.

"Well, eighty bucks a visit, three times a week for a year, is $12,480.00.  A bartender cured me for $10.00.  I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new pickup truck."

"Is that so?"  With a bit of an attitude he said, "And how, may I ask, did a Bartender cure you?"

"He told me to cut the legs off the bed.  Ain't nobody under there now."

FORGET THE SHRINKS.  HAVE A DRINK & TALK TO A BARTENDER!  IT'S ALWAYS BETTER TO GET A SECOND OPINION.

AND GOD LOOKED DOWN

Most seniors never get enough exercise:  In His wisdom God decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for their glasses, keys and other things thus doing more walking.

And God looked down and saw that it was good.

Then God saw there was another need.  In His wisdom He made seniors lose coordination so they would drop things requiring them to bend, reach and stretch.

And God looked down and saw that it was good.

Then God considered the function of bladders and decided seniors would have additional calls of nature requiring more trips to the bathroom, thus providing more exercise.

God looked down and saw that it was good.

So if you find as you age, you are getting up and down more, remember it is God's will.  It is all in your best interest even though you mutter under your breath.

Nine Important Facts To Remember As We Grow Older

#9 Death is the number 1 killer in the world.

#8 Life is sexually transmitted.

#7 Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.

#6 Men have 2 motivations:  hunger and hanky panky, and they can't tell them apart.  If you see a gleam in his eyes, make him a sandwich.

#5 Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day.  Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks, months, maybe years......

#4 “Health Nuts” are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing.

#3 All of us could take a lesson from the weather.  It pays no attention to criticism.

#2 In the 1960's, people took acid to make the world weird.  Now the world IS weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal.

Food for Thought

How to create a social state by Saul Alinsky

There are eight levels of control that must be obtained before you are able to create a social state.  The first is the most important.

1) Healthcare– Control healthcare and you control the people.

2) Poverty – Increase the Poverty level as high as possible, poor people are easier to control and will not fight back if you are providing everything for them to live.

3) Debt – Increase the debt to an unsustainable level. .That way you are able to increase taxes, and this will produce more poverty.

4) Gun Control– Remove the ability to defend themselves from the Government. That way you are able to create a police state.

5) Welfare – Take control of every aspect of their lives (Food, Housing, and Income)

6) Education – Take control of what people read and listen to – take control of what children learn in school.

7) Religion – Remove the belief in the God from the Government and schools

8) Class Warfare – Divide the people into the wealthy and the poor. This will cause more discontent and it will be easier to take (Tax) the wealthy with the support of the poor.

Does any of this sound like what is happening to the United States?

Alinsky merely simplified Vladimir Lenin's original scheme for world conquest by communism, under Russian rule.  Stalin described his converts as "Useful Idiots."   The Useful Idiots have destroyed every nation in which they have seized power and control.  It is presently happening at an alarming rate in the U.S.

If people can read this and still say everything is just fine…they are “useful idiots.

"It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere."
