From the Editor

This issue is getting out a little late with us being down south with our Georgia kids and grandkids for 10 days.  Asking forgiveness for being a little slow, I need to make it clear that if you enjoy getting this newsletter, the bulk of the thanks goes to Carolyn who pulls the “lion’s share” of each edition together.  I’ve generally taken the lead on writing the editorials, but I haven’t even held up my end of that deal for the last few months.  During and after my eye issues that I had over the summer—she did it all!  I have continued to get a copy out on the internet and keep our backups of all issues—but that’s a small part.  During that “dark period” for me, it just wouldn’t have happened without her.  So, now you know who is really the “editor.”

It seems that the entire summer was so full of projects and health issues that I spent most of my time just trying to get “things behind me” so I could look forward to the next task.  We spent considerable time going through getting the outside of the house power washed and painted; the deck power washed and sealed; and the swing set stained.  Then we started going through training preparing for the November mid-term elections.  While getting through that I started “building” this new notebook that I’m writing this editorial on.  We followed that 3 weeks ago by tearing out and rerunning a small portion of the driveway and front steps that had settled.  With all that behind us, we have windows scheduled to be replaced next Monday, followed by installation of new shades in the entire house and curtains in Kevin’s old bedroom.  After the first of the year we have a couple more days of painting inside the house.

The bottom line is that with all the projects “quasi” under control we feel like we have time to “breathe” and do some of the pleasurable things that we should be doing in retirement.  Just as we reach this point, we get word that a near life long friend from graduate school back at Kansas State lost his wife to stomach cancer (which we weren’t aware she had).  They were both such good people—parents and grandparents.  This event brought me to a stand still as I quickly put myself in Jerry’s position to realize that if that were me—NONE of what we have going on would mean ANYTHING!  My heart is so heavy that I am having a very hard time getting my arms around this tragic event.  I feel so sorry for Jerry, his children, and grandson and so helpless at what I can do to make a situation better that can’t be made better.  All I can do is ask God to hold him and his family close and try to get him through this so he can face the rest of his life without his loving wife.

Events like this—and you’ve all had them—remind us that we need to live each day to the fullest.  Hug and hold those we love and for the ones we can’t, call and tell them how much they mean to us.  All we have promised is just the moment…

Thoughts from the Squirrel Lair

Love Story

I saw this elderly gentleman dining by himself, with an old picture of a lady in front of him.  I thought maybe I could brighten his day by talking to him.

As I had assumed, she was his wife.  But I didn’t expect such an interesting story.  They met when they were both 17.  They dated briefly, then lost contact when he went to war and her family moved.  But he said he thought about her the entire war.  After his return, he decided to look for her.  He searched for her for 10 years and never dated anyone.  People told him he was crazy, to which he replied, “I am.  Crazy in love.”  On a trip to California, he went to a barber shop.  He told the barber how he had been searching for a girl for ten years.  The barber went to his phone and called his daughter in.  It was her!  She had also been searching for him and never dated either.

He proposed immediately and they were married for 55 years before her death 5 years ago.  He still celebrates her birthday and their anniversary.  He takes her picture with him everywhere and kisses her goodnight.

Some inspiring things he said;

"I was a very rich man.  Not with money, but with love."

"I never had a single argument with my wife, but we had lots of debates."

"People are like candles.  At any moment a breeze can blow it out, so enjoy the light while you have it."

"Tell your wife that you love her everyday.  And be sure to ask her, have I told you that I love you lately?"

Be sure to talk to the elderly.  Especially strangers.  You may think that you will brighten their day, but you may be surprised that they can actually brighten yours.”

VIEW GODS HANDIWORK, AWESOME, BEAUTIFUL.

The fool has said in his heart there is no God, Psalm 14:1.  When you look at these pictures, it truly isn't hard to understand that you don't have to be very smart to believe in God, but you have to be pretty dumb not to.

God bless and keep you. The Lord's face shine upon you and be gracious to you.

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Wyman Meinzer, Photographer

Wyman Meinzer is the photographer.  The photo of the coiled rattlesnake appeared on the cover of a wildlife magazine in the 80s.  He said there were times he crawled a long way on his belly to get a good shot of a wild animal.

The music is by Doug Smith.  Doug is from Petersburg, Texas.  Doug plays by ear.  He cannot read music, but has many CDs you may want to buy.

Most of the pictures were taken in West Texas in the rolling plains (Caprock to Seymour), the Fork, 6666, and Waggoner Ranches.  There are some scenes in Palo Duro Canyon.

Take a few moments and view and listen.  I doubt if you'll ever see such fantastic use of music set to amazing animal and landscape photography.  The changes in the tempo perfectly compliment the scenery.  It is quite simply a beautiful portrayal of the State of Texas

HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY?
(Written by kids)

You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming.
-- Alan, age 10

-No person really decides before they grow up whom they're going to marry.  God decides it all way before and you get to find out later who you're stuck with.
-- Kristen, age 10

WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED?
Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then..
-- Camille, age 10

HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED?
You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids.
-- Derrick, age 8

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MOM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON?
Both don't want any more kids.
-- Lori, age 8

WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE?
Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough.
-- Lynnette, age 8 (isn't she a treasure)

-On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date.
-- Martin, age 10

WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE?
When they're rich.
-- Pam, age 7 (Love her)

The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn't want to mess with that.
-- Curt, age 7

The rule goes like this:  If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them.  It's the right thing to do.
-- Howard, age 8

IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED?
It's better for girls to be single but not for boys.  Boys need someone to clean up after them.
-- Anita, age 9 (bless you child)

HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN'T GET MARRIED?
There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn't there?
-- Kelvin, age 8

And the #1 Favorite is…

HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK?
Tell your wife that she looks pretty, even if she looks like a dump truck.
-- Ricky, age 10

Enjoyed your story about cotton pulling and school letting out at noon so we could harvest the cotton crop while the town kids played ball, etc.

I left the farm for a tour in the navy and married a Bostonian and lived in New

England for 40 years.  Once while I visited family and friends in Oklahoma I

was headed from Hobart after cotton pulling was over I saw one of those machines I had heard about that could harvest cotton.  On seeing that marvelous machine I pulled over on the shoulder and sat there several minutes admiring that cotton puller who couldn’t speak.  Before leaving I thought that if I was a Priest I would go over and bless that machine.  Not being a Catholic I had to leave that duty to someone qualified to do it for me.

Sincerely,

First, although we lost a great lady today in the Perkins family, we know she has joined that wild party in Heaven with so many other Perkins family members.  She was so greatly loved and loving to her whole family and shared so much love and laughter with all Perkins members.  You will be greatly missed Houston, TX - Barbara Perkins Schlauch

Item two:

As the subject line indicated this is mostly about my father in law, Phil Arnold, the 79 year old touch cookie, former USAF para-jumper.  Those of us who receive this message are believers in the power of prayer, knowing our life is still in God's hands not matter what we humanely want (probably the wrong use of that word or wrong word).  I asked Phil today if he had a Thanksgiving celebration to share as we had not had an update from him in a while.  He is definitely one person where the proof of prayer stands undeniably.  Thank you for all the prayers you have sent and sharing of his stories with your prayer list and friends that he has sent us over the last months and years and keep them flowing.  Now, on to Phil's Thanksgiving thankfulness message.

Why am I thankful during this special season of Thanksgiving?
by Phil Arnold

Some would call this last six years a rough period in my life.  But when I think what it could have been like I realize that I’m much more fortunate than the “average bear” who might have experienced the same circumstances.  Helen (aka Petey, my wife) died six years ago this past June and I’ve been fighting cancer since August of that same year.   In between her death and my first cancer surgery I had a heart attack and spent a week in the hospital and then eight months in heart rehab three times a week.  Thirty-three of us also started a new church work during that same August.  We named it “GloryLand Baptist Church” and it is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.  We didn’t have a pastor to start with so the group asked me to be the pastor to get it started.  This decision was made ‘after the fact’ of deciding we would start the church.  They said if I’d give it 90 days they would attempt to find a pastor during that time.  I really had not intended to pastor again, but six years later GloryLand finally called another pastor.  I had a little stroke a few months ago and it was necessary for me to back out of service for a while.  The consequences of the stroke are fading rapidly, but I’m getting ahead of my story.

During the past six years I have had four cancer surgeries, sixty-three radiation treatments, and 13 rounds of chemo therapy.  The cancer started on my right temple and then crept down the right side of my face.  They removed all of the nerves in the right side of my forehead and my right eyebrow and eye lid sag noticeably now.  They removed the largest part of the carotid gland in front of my ear (which makes spit) and a cancerous tumor that was wrapped around my main facial nerve.  That surgery partially paralyzed the right size of my face, mouth, part of my tongue, and neck.  However, it is slowly improving and should eventually return to normal or close to it.  Christian people all over the world were praying for me on a regular basis and most of them are you folks who will read this report.  Now let me tell you the good part that your prayers undoubtedly accomplished:  I have never been in any serious pain from the cancer even tho it appeared in three different places on my face during this six year period.  I never got sick from the radiation even tho a lot of the hair on the right side of my head and face is now missing.  Most lose all of the hair on their head and many from all over their body from the chemo but I never lost a single hair from anywhere.  I have no limitations that were caused by the cancer or any of the treatments (except the sagging eyelid which causes my eye to get tired if I read too long) and due to a very tolerant church I was able to maintain my ministry most of the time during the six years I have had this thing.  I did have a few weeks of hospitalization at various times during which time a supply preacher was necessary.  Now if all of that is not the answer to pray I don’t know what is.  I am so thankful for the prayers of Christian people, which are your prayers, and for the Lord’s consistent faithfulness.

A few months ago, when I had the stroke I mentioned above and which had nothing to do with the cancer, I could think what I wanted to say and write but I couldn’t always translate it into action where I could speak it or write it.  The church gracefully let me back out of my pastoral responsibilities but asked me to remain a part of the church.  What a gracious bunch of folks!  Because our church is composed mostly of those of us who have been fast friends thru membership in two other churches before GloryLand, our membership has had a special bond as brothers and sisters in Christ.  We have also always tried to pass the feeling of that love and relationship on to new members who have joined our fellowship.  However, because of that bond it is not easy for someone to come it and be completely accepted and effective in the roll of a new  pastor. But - - - -  God sent us one!  Bro Steve Williams, who is and will continue to be the Chaplin of the Owasso Senior Citizen Home accepted our work as an Interim Pastor but is rapidly being visualized and accepted as our regular pastor.  He is a special kind of guy who can fulfill the needs of GloryLand Baptist Church so please pray for him as you have me.  It may surprise him but I believe he will be with us on a permanent basis.  As the old saying goes “God doesn’t call the qualified but qualifies the called” and it seems evident that He has called Bro Steve to this position, at least in my opinion. We’ll see!

And that is why I am thankful.

Phil Arnold

November 28, 2014

Well, Phil's update for Thanksgiving was a good one.  But now something different.

Kim, Kathy's youngest sister and Phil's youngest daughter was born some 55 years ago with major brain damage and not expected to live.  Phil has always said God used her and her condition of severely retarded as another way for him to minister.  Kim gets to come home and visit about 30 days a year from the facility where she lives and works north of Tulsa.  Thanksgiving night she developed a full body rash then about 9:30 or so had a full Grand Mal seizure and stopped breathing.  An ambulance was called and she is at St. Francis in Tulsa now.  She is very labored in her breathing and has not talked since the seizure only grunting.  Her white count is very high so she has an infection and that may have caused this seizure.  It is not the first time family has been told she will probably not full through this medical event, but she is looking/sounding very bad this time.  Prayers for Kim in her struggles and for Phil as he may be losing one of this young daughters soon.

Geary McDowell

I had not much more than sent the previous message and we received the call about 3:45, Kim, Kathy Arnold McDowell's youngest sister never regained conscience from the big seizure last night.  She passed away this afternoon.

Thanks for your prayers and thought for her and her family.

Food for Thought

A little sanity in troubled times...

Apparently the White House referred to Christmas Trees as Holiday Trees for the first time this year which prompted CBS presenter, Steven Levy, to present this piece which I would like to share with you.  I think it applies just as much to many countries as it does to America.

 A little sanity please...

Hope we find GOD again before it is too late!!

The following was written by Steven Levy and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning
Commentary.

My confession:

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians.  I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period.  I have no idea where the concept came from, that America is an explicitly atheist country.  I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat...

Or maybe I can put it another way:  where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him?  I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too.  But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different:  This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking.

In light of recent events...terrorists attacks, school shootings, etc…I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years > ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK.  Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school...The Bible says thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself.  And we said OK.

Then Dr. Steven Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave, because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide).  We said an expert should know what he's talking about.  And we said okay.

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out.  I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.'

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell.

Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says.

Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.

Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

Are you laughing yet?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it.

Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God
thinks of us.

Pass it on if you think it has merit.  If not, then just discard it...no one will know you did.  But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.
