From the Editor

Another month is coming to a close and we are marching right along.  I am happy to report that Mike’s eye sight has continued to improve.  When we went back to the doctor on July 8, the scan showed that there was no fluid in the eye or behind the macula.  That was great news.  The doctor said Mike didn’t need another shot at that time.  We go back again on Aug. 4 for another evaluation.  If there is still no fluid, the doctor will spread the time between appointments.  The vision test showed that Mike was seeing as good as he has seen in the last 3 years.

After another refraction, he now has new glasses—five pair—regular, sun glasses, TV glasses, computer glasses, and shooting glasses.  All but the computer glasses are working great and they had to be remade so hopefully in another couple of weeks those will be right and he can more comfortably use the computer.  We are so thankful for the progress he has made and pray that it will continue.  The doctor still believes the eye issue was a result of stress so we are continuing to work on keeping stress down.  And I must say Mike is doing much better at not letting small things worry him.

We can also report great results with his CPAP machine.  He has continued to adjust to it and says “I hate it” but I feel so much better.  He went back to the doctor for a follow up after being on the machine for 22 days.  The doctor told him he could be a “Poster Child” for CPAP.  During the sleep study, Mike quit breathing an average of 16 times an hour.  For the first 22 days he was on the machine, he quit breathing an average of .3 times an hour.  That is an amazing difference and is probably why he feels so much better.  So he continues to diligently work at getting more adjusted to it.

We had a wonderful July 4th weekend with our Georgia kids.  It is so much fun to be able to be with the little ones and see them in their environment for a few days.  They are growing and changing too quickly.

Since getting home from Georgia, we have been busy trying to keep the yard work done and pool clean.  Summer is a busy time around here and takes lots of Mike’s time to keep everything looking good.

We have a busy next few days.  Karen turns 40 on Sunday.  Mark, her husband, planned a surprise birthday party for her for Saturday night.  He called me to ask if I could help him with the food.  I told him not to worry I would take care of all of it.  Then his mother contacted me to say he had asked her as well so we coordinated what each would do.  I must say I am so glad I can do this but I do miss not being able to ask Karen questions about a few of the dips I want to make.  They are her recipes and she usually makes them.  I think I can follow them and just hope they turn out as good as hers do.  After all, her friends who will be there are accustomed to her great cooking.  I just hope we can pull this surprise off.  I think there will be 20 to 24 adults and 12 kids in attendance.  That will take a lot of food but I have lots of things planned.

We have more excitement coming up.  Earlier this year Kevin and Brenda asked if we would like to take a trip to Alaska with them.  Brenda knew that Alaska was the only state I hadn’t been to and she knew how much I really wanted to go.  We told them we would love to go.  They asked what I wanted to do—take a cruise or fly to Alaska and travel across the state the entire time.  I quickly chose the flying to Alaska and traveling across the state by train.  We told them to pick whatever tours appealed to them and we would be happy.  Kevin and Brenda planned the entire trip and Kevin spent the better part of 3 or 4 days getting all the reservations, tickets, etc.  We depart Atlanta on a non-stop flight to Anchorage on August 15 and return on August 23.  We will spend 7 days going from place to place.  I am so excited.

We will only be home one day from that trip until we go RVing with Karen and her family for a long Labor Day weekend.  Sure glad that the Alaska weather and Virginia weather call for a different kind of clothing.  I am not sure I will have time to do laundry in that one day.  We are trying to have the RV mostly ready except for food before we leave for Alaska.  We are looking forward to this trip as well.  We had so much fun at BethPage Campground last Labor Day.  We extended our trip by a day so we could have even more fun this year.  Sure hope the weather cooperates.

Now, having said all of this, you should have come to the conclusion that the next newsletter will be more than a month from now.  There is no way we can do all of this traveling and get a newsletter out.  Again, that is why we have gone to a monthly issue.  It allows us to do things we want and need to do and reduces the stress of trying to get a newsletter out.  This approach is critical for Mike’s continued health and eye sight.

Thoughts from the Squirrel Lair

My Travel Plans for 2014

I just hope that you understand.

I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots.  Apparently, you can't go alone.  You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I've also never been in Cognito.  I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane.  They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there.  I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt.  That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often.

I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older.

One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense!  It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!

PLEASE DO YOUR PART!

You can do your bit by remembering to send this e-mail to at least one unstable person.  My job is done!

Life is too short for negative drama and petty things. So laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly!

From one unstable person to another.   I hope everyone is happy in your head - we're all doing pretty well in mine!

One Minute of Your Time

You may have seen this before…It is worth another look.….

This is a commercial for Food City, a food chain located in the southeast and headquartered in Bristol, TN.  Yes, it was meant for a Happy July 4th commercial but it is great and brings meaning anytime one watches it.

Not a word spoken and none needed.  Very few commercials deserve to go viral. This one does.

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Bubba

His name was Bubba, he was from Mississippi and he needed a loan.  So, he walked into a bank in New York City and asked for the loan Officer.  He told the loan officer that he was going to Paris for an International Redneck Festival for two weeks and needed to borrow $5,000 and that he was not a depositor of the bank.  The bank officer told him that the bank would need some form of security for the loan, so the Redneck handed over the keys to a new Ferrari.  The car was parked on the street in front of the bank.  The Redneck produced the title and everything checked out.  The loan officer agreed to hold the car as collateral for the loan and apologized for having to charge 12% interest.

Later, the bank's president and its officers all enjoyed a good laugh at the Redneck from the south for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral for a $5,000 loan.  An employee of the bank then drove the Ferrari into the bank's private underground garage and parked it.

Two weeks later, the Redneck returned, repaid the $5,000 and the interest of $23.07.  The loan officer said, "Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled.  While you were away, we checked you out on Dunn & Bradstreet and found that you are distinguished alumni from Ole Miss University, a highly sophisticated investor and multi-millionaire with real estate and financial interests all over the world.  Your investments include a large number of wind turbines around Sweetwater, Texas.  What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?"

The good 'ole boy replied, "Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $23.07 and expect it to be there when I return?"

His name was BUBBA....

Keep an eye on those southern boys!

Just because we talk funny does not mean we are stupid.

Chuckles for Seniors

Getting Older

A distraught senior citizen phones her doctor’s office.

“Is it true,” she wanted to know, “that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life?”

“Yes, I’m afraid so,” the doctor told her.

There was a moment of silence before the senior lady replied, “I’m wondering then, just how serious is my condition because this prescription is marked ‘NO REFILLS’.”

****

An older gentleman was on the operating table awaiting surgery and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon, perform the operation.

As he was about to get the anesthesia, he asked to speak to his son.

“Yes, Dad, what is it?”

“Don’t be nervous, son; do your best, and just remember, if it doesn’t go well, if something happens to me, your mother is going to come and live with you and your wife.”

****

Aging:  Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.  This is so true.  I love to hear them say “you don’t look that old.”

****

The older we get, the few things seem worth waiting in line for.  (Mostly because we forgot why we were waiting in line in the first place.)

****

Some people try to turn back their odometers.  Not me!  I want people to know why I look this way.  I’ve traveled a long way and some of the roads weren’t paved.

****

When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to your youth, think of Algebra.

****

One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young.

****

Ah, being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable.

****

First you forget names; then you forget faces.  Then you forget to pull up your zipper…it’s worse when you forget to pull it down.

****

Two guys, one old, one young, are pushing their carts around Wal-Mart when they collide.

The old guy says to the young guy, “Sorry about that.  I’m looking for my wife, and I guess I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.”

The young guy say, “That’s OK, it’s a coincidence.  I’m looking for my wife, too.  I can’t find her and I’m getting a little desperate.”

The old guy says, “Well, maybe I can help you find her, what does she look like?”

The young guy says, “Well, she is 27 years old, tall, with red hair, blue eyes, is buxom…wearing no bra, long legs, and is wearing shorts.  What does your wife look like?”

To which the old guy says, “Doesn’t matter, let’s look for yours.”

****

(And this final one especially for me,)

“Lord, keep Your arm around my shoulder and Your hand over my mouth!”

Now, if you feel this doesn’t apply to you…stick around a while…it will!

At least three people had asked last week about my father in law as there have been no updates sent out.  He has not had much to say in any changes.  I was thinking last week I should send out something.  I asked and here is his response.  Phil, the middle daughter Karen and her daughter Brittany, had just returned last week from a week or so in Minnesota visiting his in laws (Helen's brothers and sisters).  He did well on the trip.

Thanks for caring,

Geary McDowell, Phil's favorite son in law

Kathy McDowell, Phil's favorite daughter;)

Nice to have people interested in me.

I’ve had an infection in the incision where it circles under my ear and up my cheek to the cancer site.  I’ve had three courses of antibiotics and we are hoping that killed it.  It is no longer seeping but has gotten sore again so we are just waiting to see what it does.  I don’t mean to sound negative but the doctor said if it doesn’t clear up soon or gets sorer he will want me to call and make an appointment with him.  He will want to do a biopsy.  He would be concerned about more cancer at that point.  Sooooooo - we are just waiting to see.  Thru the last three operations, where they evidently didn’t get all the cancer because it kept coming back, my dog would not lick me or even smell me on that side of my face.  Since this last surgery he will kiss me on that side and sniff me a little. Therefore, we are trusting his judgment and assuming it is not more cancer – lol. GOOD DOG!

I am having cataract surgery on my first eye tomorrow so I really don’t want to go for a biopsy in the near future.  However, I don’t want to have more cancer again either.  When I got finished with that 9.5 hour surgery I said I was never going to have another elective surgery.  That didn’t last long, huh?

Thanks for asking.

Eye surgery went just great.  I was amazed how much like a real surgery that they treated it.  Man they had a real operating room, attendants, anesthesiologist, and the whole bit.  It took about 15 minutes.  The doctor kept telling me what he was doing or getting ready to do (which was nice) and then they wheeled me out.   About 10 minutes in the recovery room where they gave me a cup of coffee and we were on our way home.  Actually we went to breakfast.  Brittany took me for the surgery of course.  As usual, I haven’t had any discomfort or problems, and tho I can’t see perfectly out of it yet I feel good.  I had to go back for a checkup 24 hours after the operation and he said it was still swollen and dilated, which is normal, but I should have full, clear vision by Sunday.  Right now I can’t tell any difference at all except it is blurry.  I go back again in 7 days.  At that time I’m supposed to plan the surgery for the other eye if I am going to have it done.

I called Oklahoma City, OU, today and made an appointment to see my cancer surgeon again.  It will be on Friday.  The incision under my ear is still sore and seeping puss so I imagine he will schedule me for another biopsy after he sees me.  Golly I hope it isn’t the cancer back.  We shall see.

All is well here and aside from those things I’ve mentioned everyone seems to be doing okay.

I always wondered what the B in his name meant!  LOL.  I know, but again, proof of the power of prayer!  Thanks all and continue, is works.  Geary McDowell

The email from Phil, my father in law.

I went back to my eye doctor today for my 7 day check up from the cataract surgery.  He said his tests showed that my eye was seeing as well now without my glasses as it was before the surgery with my glasses.  I find that hard to believe since I can’t perceive a significant difference, but that is what the man said and I doubt he would lie about it.  I guess I’m a bit disappointed because I expected to see essentially normal without my glasses after the surgery.  But when you stop to think that I have had all those radiation treatments (63 total) on that side of my face, had all of the nerves removed from that side of my forehead, have a droopy eyebrow, and had those 4 surgeries on that side also it may have affected my vision enough that what I’ve got is all I can get.  (They evaluated that I have lost 1/3 of my hearing on that side from the radiation so it is logical that it also had some effect on my eyesight.)  He said he realized I was expecting a “wow factor” and maybe I’ll get it when the other eye is done.  He didn’t encourage me in any way to have the second eye done so I don’t think it was just a sales pitch.  I am going to have the other eye done, of course, because the cataract in it will just continue to get denser whether I can see better now or not.   Eventually that cataract will cloud my eye completely and I don’t want that.

The surgical scar under my ear has continued to appear infected, has been sore, and has been weeping a little puss every since the rest of the scar got well.  I had made an appointment to go back to Oklahoma City tomorrow to have it checked but this morning the puss has stopped, the swelling and redness is gone, and it isn’t sore for the first time in months, so I cancelled that appointment.  I am convinced that it is the result of prayer.  It meets my definition of a miracle “an instantaneous manifestation of God’s power against nature.”  Anyway you look at it the infection seems to be gone.  I was really concerned that it might be the cancer back again even tho the doctor had assured me just recently that he didn’t think it was.  He did admit tho that it WAS a concern.

I’m so healthy and so blessed that I think I better check my bank account.  It may have increased by some extraordinary amount just based on the good fortunate I’ve experienced this week.  Tho I was a little disappointed in the results of my eye surgery, it all went perfectly and I’ve had no discomfort from it at all and I certainly haven’t LOST any vision.

Thank you Lord,

Phil B[lessed] Arnold

Hello you two.

Gee we miss hearing from you and hope Mike your vision is getting better.  Clyde has been having shots in his right eye for about 8 months.  We were driving to Edmond for 3 months and he received a shot and then we learned this Dr comes to Elk City so we have been going there.  He had fluid, no blood, just fluid in this eye.  He finally told Clyde that he did not like this med. and there was one more he wanted to try.  He said it was very expensive and he said I am going to call you insurance and he did and they agreed to cover the shot.  Clyde had 3 of them every 5 weeks and the last shot he was so pleased.  I could see it was helping on the computer and he has not had to go back now in 3 months.  This shot cost 3000 dollars each and he has had 2 of these shots.  I did not know anything about eye problem so I said you have to tell me about it as you go along and he has.  The doctor is not from this country but he is the best.  His first test along with other test was dye in his vein on his hand.  This man is very thorough and good.  They drive from Edmond once a month to Elk City.  His name is Dr.  Shah.  Your doctor may know him.  When Clyde was talking to his Cardiologist he knew him in school.  We are so lucky to have found him.  We feel he is the best.  Clyde said he would not trade either for an ally cat.  His eye Dr. here in town for 2 years kept telling him he could not put lens on him but never sent him anywhere.  Clyde did this on his own as his eye was getting worse.  Clyde loves to read and he can read just pretty good and see the TV better. Let us hear from you kids.

Your Okie Friends,

Clyde & Mabel Blackwood
