From the Editor

Well, it’s time to get another issue of the Roosevelt News—East Coast Edition on line.  We have had a very busy month since we posted the last edition.  First, let me say that Mike’s vision is improving which we are very thankful for.  He had a second injection in the eye on June 10.  The doctor said the scan showed less fluid than the earlier scan.  Mike says the vision has continued to improve.  He goes back for another scan and evaluation on July 8.  He expects that he will probably have to have another injection.  The doctor has said that as long as there is any fluid he will continue to give him an injection every 4 weeks.  Mike is back doing most everything he was before this all started.  He is working on trying to let things stress him less which is probably a key along with the work of the medicine from the injections.

We spent a little over a week on an RV trip to Elkhart, Indiana.  We took the RV back to the factory to have some repairs done that we didn’t feel could be done as well any where else.  That was an enjoyable trip.  We arrived at the factory on Saturday, June 14 for a Monday morning appointment.  They have spaces for 8 to 10 RVs to park and hook up to electricity.  By late Sunday afternoon most of them were taken by RVers bringing their almost new motor homes back for warranty work.  Mike and I felt good to know that our 8 year old RV had many fewer problems than these new ones.  Now the owners of those RVs weren’t real happy about the problems they were having but they were a fun group to visit with.  We all got our camp chairs out and sat around sharing stories of our experiences.  You will not find a friendlier group of people than RVers.  They are always ready to help the next person at the camp site and share their experiences as they travel across the country.  Actually, we are not as experienced as most of them are.  Many of the couples we met at Elkhart had been RVing for many years.

We enjoyed our time in Elkhart while they worked on the RV.  We took two different tours of factories where Thor makes different motor homes.  The RV Museum is in Elkhart.  That was an amazing place to visit.  They have 60 different motor homes and trailers dating back to the original one built in 1913.  Then this is Indiana Amish country.  We toured through the country and had dinner two nights at different Amish country kitchens.  If you have never had the opportunity to eat with the Amish, you need to take advantage if you are ever in Amish country.  We have been to the Pennsylvania Amish country several times and always enjoy visiting the Amish country.

Our trip home was eventful as well.  When we woke the second morning, Mike went out as always to check everything in preparation to hit the road again.  He found a very flat tire on our tow car.  This was a new experience for us after traveling over 40,000 miles with the RV.  But as usual, Mike was prepared.  He had bought an electric compressor when we got the RV just in case we ever had a flat on the RV.  He hooked it up to the power of the RV, blew the tire up, and after stops at the next two exits we found a Goodyear tire store.  It had plenty of room in the parking lot for us to get in and they fixed the flat.  We were then off about 3 hours later than planned but after a long day made it back home.

Since returning home Mike received his CPAP machine to help with his Sleep Apnea.  He is working so hard to adjust to it.  The first night wasn’t too bad but the second night was almost more than he could take.  He believes he has figured out what the problem is so we are hoping that with some changes to the settings on the machine, it will get better.

I have spent way too much time watching the College Baseball World Series and the World Cup Soccer games.  Now, you may ask, “Why would Carolyn spend time on either of those two things?”  Well, first both are sporting events and there are very few that I don’t enjoy—much to Mike’s dismay.  He is not the sports fan I am.  I tell him that many men would love to have a wife who is into sports like I am.  Anyway, the University of Virginia was playing in the College World Series and ever since Kevin attended UVA I have followed UVA teams regardless of the sport.  Then you probably wonder how a farm girl from Oklahoma ever got interested in soccer.  Well, both Kevin and Karen played soccer from the ages of 4 and 6 through high school.  Kevin played on a high school team that won the Virginia state championship twice and was USA Today’s number one team in the country his junior year.  I love the game and still watch and really enjoy the high level of play in the World Cup regardless of the country playing.  I will be trying to watch every game through the finals.

We are heading to Marietta to visit the Georgia grandkids over the July 4 holiday.  We are anxious to see them as we haven’t been down there since March for Parker’s birthday.  We know from visiting with them on Facetime that they are growing and changing so quickly.  We should have a great time and can enjoy their neighborhood fireworks.  One of their neighbors has a display that would put most small cities to shame.  Last year it last well over 30 minutes and the fireworks were amazing.  We aren’t exactly sure how he manages to have this display in a neighborhood but he does.  He appears to have an in with the police and fire departments as many fireman and police officers were in attendance last year.

School is finally out in Virginia and we will have Paige with us some over the summer.  She spends more time at Grammy’s since her cousin Gianna stays with Grammy.  Those two are almost as close as sisters and really don’t want to be apart.  When Paige comes to our house, Gianna will probably be with her which is great.  They are both good girls and easier to keep when they are together.  They spent Friday night with us and stayed most of Saturday to take advantage of a beautiful Virginia afternoon to swim in the pool.  They love to “play school” in our office and have a fair number of dolls in Paige’s bedroom to play with along with a dollhouse.  Paige can’t spend the night without having Nana’s waffles for breakfast.  On Saturday morning she announced as she always does that she wanted waffles because no one else’s waffles tasted like Nana’s.  She found the recipe book and the recipe so we could make waffles.  She looked at the recipe and then said, “These are French waffles.  That is why they are better than any others.”  Yes, my recipe is called French waffles so maybe that is why they are better or it could be that most everyone else who tries to feed her waffles use Eggo’s or some other frozen waffle.  I have to agree with Paige, I don’t really care much for those commercial frozen waffles.

This is enough ramblings from the editors.  We have a very busy July planned so until next month we will sign off.

I Wanted a Car, Not a Bible

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college.  For many months he
had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer’s showroom, and knowing his
father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.

As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his
father had purchased the car.  Finally, on the morning of his graduation,
his father called him into his private study, told him how proud he was
to have such a fine son, and how much he loved him.  He handed him a
beautifully wrapped gift box.

Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and
found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with his name embossed in gold.
Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money
you give me a Bible?"  He stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible
behind.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business.  He
had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father was
very old.  He thought perhaps he should go to him.  He had not seen him
since that graduation day.  But before he could make arrangements, he
received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed
all of his possessions to him.  He needed to come home immediately and take care of things.

When he arrived at his father's house, sadness and regret filled his
heart.  He began to search through his father's important documents and
saw the Bible, new, just as he had left it years ago.  With tears, he
opened the Bible and began to turn the pages.  His father had carefully
underlined a verse, Matt 7:11, "And if ye, being evil, know how to give
good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Heavenly Father
which is in Heaven, give to those who ask Him?"

As he read those words, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible.  It
had a tag with the dealer’s name, the same dealer who had the sports car
he had desired.  On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the
words... PAID IN FULL.

How many times do we miss God's blessings because they are not packaged
as we expected?

If this touched your heart, please pass it on!!

A Man with No Enemies

Meet Walter Barnes

Toward the end of the Sunday service, the Minister asked, "How many

of you have forgiven your enemies?"

80% held up their hands.  The Minister then repeated his question.  All responded this time, except one man, Walter Barnes.

"Mr. Barnes, are you not willing to forgive your enemies?"

"I don't have any," he replied gruffly.

"Mr. Barnes, that is very unusual.  How old are you?"

"Ninety-eight," he replied.  The congregation stood up and clapped their hands.

"Oh, Mr. Barnes, would you please come down in front and tell us all how a person can live ninety-eight years and not have an enemy in the world?"

The old guy tottered down the aisle, stopped in front of the pulpit, turned around, faced the congregation, and said simply, "I outlived all them assholes" - and he calmly returned to his seat.

IT ALL BECOMES CRYSTAL CLEAR

Saul Alinsky

Born:  Saul David Alinsky, January 30, 1909, Chicago, Illinois

Died:  June 12, 1972, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Education:  University of Chicago, Ph.B. 1930, University of Chicago Graduate School, Criminology, 1930, 1932.

Occupation:  Community organizer, writer, political activist

Notable works:  Reveille for Radicals (1946); Rules for Radicals (1971)

Saul David Alinsky (January 30, 1909 - June 12, 1972) was an American community organizer and writer.  He is generally considered to be the founder of modern community organizing.  He is often noted for his book Rules for Radicals.  From that book here are Saul's thoughts on how to create a social state:

There are 8 levels of control that must be obtained before you are able to create a social state.  The first is the most important.

1) Healthcare:  Control healthcare and you control the people

2) Poverty:  Increase the Poverty level as high as possible, poor people are easier to control and will not fight back if you are providing everything for them to live.

3) Debt:  Increase the debt to an unsustainable level.  That way you are able to increase taxes, and this will produce more poverty.

4) Gun Control:  Remove the ability to defend themselves from the Government. That way you are able to create a police state.

5) Welfare:  Take control of every aspect of their lives (Food, Housing, and Income)

6) Education:  Take control of what people read and listen to take control of what children learn in school.

7) Religion:  Remove the belief in the God from the Government and schools.

8) Class Warfare:  Divide the people into the wealthy and the poor. This will cause more discontent and it will be easier to take (Tax) the wealthy with the support of the poor.

Any of this sound familiar?
