From the Editor

Well it appears that we are quickly “free falling” into the “Golden Years.”  It appears that as we age more of our days are filled with doctor’s appointments.  Thank goodness, at least today, our Medicare and Federal Blue Cross are taking care of the expenses.  I am confident that we will not be left behind without increases in our rates just as those will most likely see with “Obamacare.”  I refuse to call it the “Affordable Care Act” because, unless you’re in the Medicaid portion of the act, I’m sure if you haven’t seen dramatic increases, you will.

This winter I faced the Melanoma scare, which they now think was not Melanoma at all, but AFX (still a cancer, but much less dangerous than Melanoma).  A biopsy has been sent to a third pathologist, but as yet no results.  We went to our dermatologist last week and he said that until told that he’s wrong, he is firmly convinced that it was AFX.  During that visit, he took 1 biopsy from me (which turned out to be benign) and treated 10 pre-cancers.  Carolyn had two biopsies, one of which turned out to be a basal cell cancer and will have to be removed.  I’m firmly convinced that we’re making his Mercedes payments.

I went through the “ill fated Sleep Study” that didn’t give results that anyone is comfortable with necessitating a semi-redo with a different group.  It is most likely that I do have mild Sleep Apnea and need some assistance, but don’t want to get it from the group that I describe as practicing in the “Bates Motel.”  The Sleep Specialist that we were sent to suggested that he wasn’t comfortable with the results received from them and advised that I should basically start over.  However, it is believed that one night with the new group should determine what, if any equipment I will need.

The one issue that hasn’t been addressed directly is a problem that I’ve had on and off for a while--lack of good stability (balance).  The initial thoughts are that it is most likely an inner ear problem.  However the ENT Group that I’ve discussed this with say that we need to wait until I have the onset of a spell and conduct tests at that time.

The problem that’s currently “front and center” is an abscessed tooth.  It is the rear, lower molar on the left side.  It was crowned in 2010 and gave me a problem for a few days after receiving the crown, but finally settled down.  It had a small crack in it at the time and the feeling was that a successful root canal then was risky.  Four years later, with an abscess, the odds of success are much less.  Given that a root canal will run around $2000, I think that would most likely be throwing good money after bad.  Extraction appears to be the best and most economical option.  Since I lost my rear molar on the right side several years ago and have gotten along quite well without it, I don’t see losing the left one as a big deal.  I’ve had comments from several other seniors that have faced a similar issue and too have selected an extraction.  Because of my severe gag reflex on my left side of my mouth, my dentist (and wife) feel that I should not attempt this without being sedated.  We got a referral today for an oral surgeon in the same area as our dentist that removed a lower left rear molar for my hygienist.  The dentist’s receptionist called to try to get us in ASAP.  All went well until they found out how old I was and said that I’d have to have a consultation prior to scheduling the extraction.  Sounds like they’re picking on this old man to me.  I guess that this falls into the category of “check with your doctor to see if your healthy enough for sex (or an extraction)?”  Additionally, in a small way this brings to mind the vets that were delayed in getting treatment until over 40 of them died.  I was offered an appointment for 10:30 a.m. the next morning until they found out my age--then I needed a consultation, not at 10:30 a.m. the next day, but at 3:30 p.m. the following Tuesday.  Hmm, what do you think?

I don’t want any of you to think I’m complaining or asking for sympathy, just facing reality that the Golden Years are not necessary as “Golden” as we would prefer them to be.

Remembering

Editor’s Note:  The following article by Derl Williams appeared in an  issue of the Kiowa County Democrat a few years back.  It is very appropriate as we approach Mother’s Day.  cnm

A Mother’s Prayer

Not only do Mother’s care for us in our early years, but their loving, caring ways follow us the remainder of their lives.  And to this day, each time I reflect on events of those precious years, I deny my adulthood and become her child again.  So once again, my unsolicited advice remains unchanged from last year.  This Mother’s Day give your mother something none other can, YOURSELF!  Do so either in person or in writing, perhaps both, sharing a special memory from years past and at the same time building one for years yet to come.

And for those of us where personal contact is no longer an option, recall and share a special memory of your mother with someone special in your life.  And since Jessie and Carol Middick have allowed me to share my memories with their faithful KCD readers, you are all “special” to me.  So!  I will practice what I preach, thus the following:

A Prayer for My Soldier Boy

On God as I humbly approach thy throne;

In prayer for my boy so far from home.

E’en though his life I no longer can share;

I’m trusting him God into your care.

No more can I stroke his fevered brow;

Oh God please do that for me now.

I can’t be near his clothes to iron;

And I wonder Dear God is he sleeping warm.

I’m sure Dear God you will be near,

And strengthen his heart when it’s filled with fear.

I can almost see you take his hand,

“Fear not my son” I help you stand.

Help him to be a Soldier Brave;

To help our country to save.

E’en though we can’t understand it all;

He squared his shoulders and answered the call.

He is far away from his Mother’s care;

But, I’m happy Dear God to know you are there.

Thoughts from the Squirrel Lair

The Great Architect

I dreamed that I went to Heaven and an angel was showing me around.  We walked side-by-side inside a large workroom filled with angels.  My angel guide stopped in front of the first section and said, “This is the Receiving Section.  Here, all petitions to God said in prayer are received.”

I looked around in this area, and it was terribly busy with so many angels sorting out prayer petitions written down on voluminous paper sheets from people all over the world.

Then we moved on down a long corridor until we reached the second section.

The angel then said to me, "This is the Packaging and Delivery Section.  Here, the graces and blessings the people asked for are processed and delivered to the living persons who asked for them."  I noticed again how busy it was there. There were many angels working hard at that station, since so many blessings had been requested and were being packaged for delivery to Earth.

Finally at the farthest end of the long corridor we stopped at the door of a very small station.  To my great surprise, only one angel was seated there, idly doing nothing. "This is the Acknowledgment Section,” my angel friend quietly admitted to me.  He seemed embarrassed.

"How is it that there is no work going on here?” I asked.

"So sad," the angel sighed.  "After people receive the blessings that they asked for, very few send back acknowledgments."

"How does one acknowledge God's blessings?” I asked.

"Simple," the angel answered.  Just say, "Thank you, Lord."

"What blessings should they acknowledge?" I asked.

"If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of this world.  If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy, and if you get this on your own computer, you are part of the 1% in the world who has that opportunity."

"If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the many who will not even survive this day."

"If you have never experienced the fear in battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of 700 million people in the world."

"If you can attend a church without the fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death you are envied by, and more blessed than, three billion people in the world."

"If your parents are still alive and still married.... you are very rare."

"If you can hold your head up and smile, you are not the norm, you're unique to all those in doubt and despair......."

"Ok," I said. "What now? How can I start?"

The Angel said, "If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you as very special, and you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world who cannot read at all."

Have a good day, count your blessings, and if you care to, pass this along to remind everyone else how blessed we all are..........

"Thank you GOD, for giving me the ability to share this message and for giving me so many wonderful people with whom to share it."

I thank God for everything, especially all my family and friends!

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

A Tribute to Frank Sinatra

This is something special.  Paul Anka wrote "My Way" for Sinatra, and only a violin can make this sound as beautiful as it truly is. Although Andre Rieu doesn't often play his violin through whole pieces, this time he did.  A renowned Dutch violinist, conductor and composer, and his orchestra did a tribute to Frank Sinatra with "My Way" on his Stradivarius violin at Radio City Music Hall - New York.

Will I Live to Be 80?

Give this a read.  It is pretty good at any age.

I recently picked up a new primary care doctor.  After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing “fairly well” for my age.  (I just turned 59.)

A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, “Do you think I’ll live to be 80?”

The doctor responded by asking, “Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer or wine?”

“Oh no,” I replied.  “I’m not doing drugs either.”

Then he asked, “Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?”

I said, “Not much since my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!”

“Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing hiking, or bicycling?”

“No, I don’t,” I said.

He asked, “Do you gamble, go on vacations or have a lot of sex?”

“No,” I said.

He looked at me and said, “Then, why do you even give a s---?”

I wasn't born yesterday.  The republican who wrote the article about the affordable care act and Medicare was false and only politically motivated.  Get over it taca is here to stay and thank God for that.  I wonder why the republican wouldn't leave his name.

Editor’s Note:  The link below to the Medicare website explains that you do need to be sure if you are being admitted as an “inpatient” or for “observation.”  If admitted for “observation,” Medicare Part A which pays for hospitalization will not pay.  We had been warned about this before Mike’s surgery for removal of melanoma.  Also, if you search the subject on Google, you will find several articles explaining this.  We do not know that the Affordable Care Act had any part to play in what Medicare pays but it is a fact that Medicare will not pay for hospital stays for “observation.”
