From the Editor

I’m sure you’ve heard of “A Rainy Night in Georgia.”  Well, today it’s a “Rainy Morning in Virginia.”  It’s so very relaxing to wake up hearing rain falling softly on the roof.  Hopefully it’s going to be a relaxing, uneventful day.  I’ve been fighting an issue with a knee which I find is a torn medial meniscus with floating cartilage around the joint.  I had an MRI last week to confirm, but my doctor’s on vacation and I can’t see him until next week to schedule surgery.  I don’t feel that I want to suffer the pain until winter to repair it, so plan to go ahead and deal with the surgery and recovery now rather than the continued recurring pain.

As many of you who are Facebook friends know, we eat out more than we should and on Mondays after Ryan Newman finishes in the top 10 in the Saturday night or Sunday NASCAR Sprint Cup Race, we go to Outback for the free Bloomin’ Onion compliments of Ryan.  We have a favorite waiter at the Potomac Millis location that treats our family like we are “Rock Stars.”  He takes good care of us and with our tip we always take good care of him.  Last night when he left, he ran out the door and handed us his email address indicating that he might be “moving on” and wanted to keep in contact with us.  He’s a bright young man and has much greater potential that being a waiter at Outback.  Whether he’s moving on to another restaurant or into a totally new career, we wish him the very best.

Before you think I was negative referencing the fact that he was a waiter at Outback, let me say that our daughter, Karen, after finishing her college degree worked in two different restaurants, managed one--and made very good money in tips for some three years.  Having a daughter depend mainly on tips for survival we quickly observed the importance of being as generous as possible with tips before signing the ticket.

Now to the “meat” of this editorial.  I see drastic differences in how people tip in different parts of this great country.  I see two reasons for that.  First, the low   “tippers” never had a child trying to make it waiting tables or second, they unfortunately don’t understand that the bulk of the waiter or waitress’ salary is actually in tips.  Most receive minimum wage for their toil.  Based on our experience following Karen’s “journey through the industry” we have decided that a good job deserves a 15 to 20 percent tip--usually we’re on the high side and an excellent job deserves a little more.  Trust me if you are a return patron, your “tip rate” definitely makes a difference in the level of service you’ll receive.  However, if the service is sub-par, our tip definitely decreases proportionately.  Such “generosity” has little impact on future visits because if service was that bad, most likely you will not return anyway.  Another factor we pay close attention to is if you’ve received a “break” on your bill, you should tip on what the full bill should have been.  Should the restaurant “comp” your meal because of an issue in the kitchen, you shouldn’t “short” the waiter/waitress on the tip as that most likely had nothing to do with her/him.  Our “Outback waiter” seldom charges for soft drinks or tea—just rings in ice water.  Therefore, we include the cost of drinks before calculating our tips.

In summary, that’s my “take” on the tipping process, “Not a sermon, just a thought  and obviously, you have the option to agree or disagree.

This piece written by Capt. Stephen R. Ellison should make each one of us thankful for those who served in WWII as well as any other time.  Unfortunately, they are not appreciated as they should be.

Thoughts from the Squirrel Lair

From the website LMAO

Me:  God, can I ask You a question?

God:  Sure.

Me:  Promise You won't get mad

God:  I promise.

Me:  Why did you let so much stuff happen to me today?

God:  What do you mean?

Me:  Well, I woke up late.

God:  Yes.

Me:  My car took forever to start

God:  Okay.

Me:  At lunch they made my sandwich wrong & I had to wait

God:  Huummm

Me:  On the way home, my phone went DEAD, just as I picked up a call

God:  All right.

Me:  And on top of it all off, when I got home ~I just wanted to soak my feet in my new foot massager & relax. BUT it wouldn't work!!! Nothing went right today!  Why did you do that?

God:  Let me see, the death angel was at your bed this morning & I had to send one of My Angels to battle him for your life.  I let you sleep through that

Me:  (humbled): OH

GOD:  I didn't let your car start because there was a drunk driver on your route that would have hit you if you were on the road.

Me:  (ashamed)

God:  The first person who made your sandwich today was sick & I didn't want you to catch what they have, I knew you couldn't afford to miss work.

Me:  (embarrassed): Okay

God:  Your phone went dead because the person that was calling was going to give false witness about what you said on that call, I didn't even let you talk to them so you would be covered.

Me (softly):  I see God.

God:  Oh and that foot massager, it had a shortage that was going to throw out all of the power in your house tonight.   didn't think you wanted to be in the dark.

Me:  I'm Sorry God.

God:  Don't be sorry, just learn to Trust Me.... in all things--the Good & the bad.

Me:  I will trust You.

God:  And don't doubt that My plan for your day is Always Better than your plan.

Me:  I won't God.  And let me just tell you God, Thank You for Everything today.

God:  You're welcome child.  It was just another day being your God and I Love looking after My Children...

2011 NEWSFLASH

The 2011 Roosevelt High School Class Reunion was held on September 30 and October 1, 2011, in Roosevelt, Oklahoma, at the Grade School.  Several alumni donated items that were auctioned off during the festivities to raise funds for the alumni association to help finance future alumni events and keep costs to a level that all may enjoy.  So please remember to bring your items to donate for the auction on Saturday.  It is a lot of fun and a chance to show off your talents.  Don’t miss out on the third fund-raising auction to be held at the 2013 Reunion on Saturday, September 28 between the hours of 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.  If you have any special talent, arts and crafts, recipes, old or unused items, bring them on down and we will auction them off—anything from your favorite home-made jams, quilts, tractor, old phonographs, etc.

If anyone need more information or has questions about the reunion, please call Dan Hayslip at 972-938-3703 or 214-796-3131 or email him at danhayslip@sbcgloal.net

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Cooperton Valley Picture Trail

The “Cooperton Valley” Picture Trail site has been renewed for all to enjoy.  Thanks to Karen (Johnson) Mason for funding this site for the coming year.  This site has many pictures from past Cooperton School reunions.  We hope that you will find these photos interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past (or if you have and wondered where it went).  Go to http://www.picturetrail.com/coopertonvalley to visit the site.

This is a very cool video.  Almost unbelievable how far we have come in space exploration.  Just a shame the United States has decided to leave most of the exploration to private industry to Russia.

Wasp Spray as Personal Defense

There have been emails circulating suggesting using wasp spray rather than pepper spray for self defense.  Finding this interesting, I did some research on the idea and found that it really is not a good idea, in fact, it probably is illegal to use wasp spray for that purpose so thought I would share with our readers.  cnm

The following link gives the content of emails that have circulated about using wasp spray rather than pepper spray for self defense.  Read it.

http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/crime/a/wasp_spray.htm

Now go to the link below which is provided by Oklahoma Personal Defense, The Myth of Wasp Spray.

After reading both, I think you will agree that it is best to stay with the pepper spray.

Humor

Here is old age at its best…

Russ and Fred, two friends, met in the park every day to feed the pigeons, watch the squirrels and discuss world problems.

One day Russ didn't show up.  Fred didn't think much about it and figured   maybe he had a cold or something.  But after Russ hadn't shown up for a week   or so, Fred really got worried.  However, since the only time they ever got together was at the park, Fred didn't know where Russ lived, so he was unable to find out what had happened to him.

A month had passed, and Fred figured he had seen the last of Russ, but one day, Fred approached the park and--lo and behold!--there sat Russ!

Fred was very excited and happy to see him and told him so.  Then he said, 'For crying out loud Russ, what in the world happened to you?'

Russ replied, 'I have been in jail.'

'Jail!' cried Fred. What in the world for?'

'Well,' Russ said, 'you know Sue, that cute little blonde waitress at the coffee shop where I sometimes go?'

'Yeah,' said Fred, 'I remember her.  What about her?

'Well, the little gold-digging witch figured I was rich and she filed rape charges against me; and, at 89 years old, I was so proud that when I got into court, I pleaded 'guilty'.

'The judge gave me 30 days for perjury.'
