From the Editor

I’ve been trying to “jam” all of the normal rest I get during the winter into a few short days.  Our winter activities in the house just about wiped out all the rest and relaxation we normally get during the winter months.  We’ve so enjoyed the last few weeks since pretty much getting the house back into order.  That’s not to say that we haven’t continued to get “new stuff” done.  My standard operating procedure is up by six followed by coffee, Morning Joe, and Fox News to bring me back far enough to “Right” to feel comfortable.  Then I allow myself two or three hours to accomplish something progressive, followed by lunch, a shower, and maybe a short nap.  That all works pretty well and keeps me thinking that I’m really contributing to making things better around the house.

We’ve so enjoyed the last few warm days, but this morning it’s 32 degrees and feels like 23.  We brought the RV out of storage a week ago to start getting it together for our trip back to Indiana the first part of May for some repairs.  I de-winterized it on Sunday afternoon only to have to drain all the water out of the system yesterday in preparation for last night’s temperatures.  Hopefully it survived the temps without incident.

We’ve been able to work in a little range time over the last couple of weeks and the practice is definitely needed.  We’re just about back up to where we were (in accuracy) when we had to lay off the end of January due to the work on our house.  We hope to be able to continue this on a semi regular basis.  Although we have enough to keep shooting, ammo--especially .22’s is starting to get very hard to get again.  It’s hard to know exactly why.  I haven’t seen if the government is still buying, but believe they must be or the shortage wouldn’t be there.  The shelves are no where as bare as they’ve been with the higher calibers.  We always have our eye out for the “good stuff” and would never turn down getting more of it.

I had a long conversation with my cousin Mickey May back in Roosevelt last night.  He’d been down in the Cold Springs area actually driving to where he used to live south of Cold Springs, prior to the building of Lake Tom Steed.  This entire area has been under water for 30 years.  It was so cool listening to him describe the landmarks that were so familiar to us while growing up that have again resurfaced.  As interesting as this is, the locals are desperately in need for significant rain, first of all for crops and secondly and probably more importantly to replenish this lake and farm ponds with much needed water.  Normal rains will not be enough.  Torrential rainfall is what is needed.  Unfortunately, even with good rains, it will take years to fill this lake back up.  My Granddad Glenn May and my Uncle Floyd May always said in the years prior to building the lake that it would be nothing more than a “frog pond.”  Unfortunately, that is starting to come true.  Neither of them lived long enough to see the lake built--which was probably good.  However, regardless of their thoughts which were mainly biased by the fact that they would lose most of their land to the lake, I think they would have actually enjoyed it.  If you have a “chat with God” when you retire in the evening, please send up a request for the good people of southwest Oklahoma to receive rain.  Rain for them is not just a need, it’s a MUST!

Oak Ridge, Tennessee, America’s Secret Atomic City

These links provide information about Oak Ridge, Tennessee, America’s Secret Atomic City in WWII.  The photos by Ed Westcott who was the only photographer authorized by the federal government to take pictures of the area give us a good visual of what went on in that secret city.  I doubt that many American’s knew of this at the time.  Enjoy this little bit of American history.

Thoughts from the Squirrel Lair

Just Checking In Today

A Minister passing through his church
In the middle of the day,
Decided to pause by the altar
To see who came to pray.

Just then the back door opened,
And a man came down the aisle,
The minister frowned as he saw the man
Hadn't shaved in a while.

His shirt was torn and shabby,
And his coat was worn and frayed,
The man knelt down and bowed his head,
Then rose and walked away.

In the days that followed at precisely noon,
The preacher saw this chap,
Each time he knelt just for a moment,
A lunch pail in his lap.

Well, the minister's suspicions grew,
With robbery his main fear,
He decided to stop and ask the man,
'What are you doing here?'

The old man said he was a factory worker
And lunch was half an hour
Lunchtime was his prayer time,
For finding strength and power.

"I stay only a moment
Because the factory's far away;
As I kneel here talking to the Lord,
This is kinda' what I say":

"I Just Came By To Tell You, Lord,
How Happy I Have Been,
Since We Found Each Other's Friendship
And You Took Away My Sin.

Don't Know Much Of How To Pray,
But I Think About You Every day.
So, Jesus, This Is Ben,
Just Checking In Today."

The minister feeling foolish,
Told Ben that it was fine.
He told the man that he was welcome
To pray there anytime.

"It's time to go, and thanks," Ben said
As he hurried to the door.
Then the minister knelt there at the altar,
Which he'd never done before.

His cold heart melted, warmed with love,
As he met with Jesus there.
As the tears flowed down his cheeks,
He repeated old Ben's prayer:

"I Just Came By To Tell You, Lord,
How Happy I've Been,
Since We Found Each Other's Friendship
And You Took Away My Sin.

I Don't Know Much Of How To Pray,
But I Think About You Every day.
So, Jesus, This Is Me,
Just Checking In Today."

Past noon one day, the minister noticed
That old Ben hadn't come.
As more days passed and still no Ben,
He began to worry some.

At the factory, he asked about him,
Learning he was ill.
The hospital staff was worried,
But he'd given them a thrill.

The week that Ben was with them,
Brought changes in the ward.
His smiles and joy contagious.
Changed people were his reward.

The head nurse couldn't understand
Why Ben could be so glad,
When no flowers, calls or cards came,
Not a visitor he had.

The minister stayed by his bed,
He voiced the nurse's concern:
No friends had come to show they cared.
He had nowhere to turn.

Looking surprised, old Ben spoke up
And with a winsome smile;
"The nurse is wrong, she couldn't know,
He's been here all the while."

"Every day at noon He comes here,
A dear friend of mine, you see,
He sits right down and takes my hand,
Leans over and says to me:

'I Just Came By To Tell You, Ben,
How Happy I Have Been,
Since We Found This Friendship,
And I Took Away Your Sin.

I Think About You Always
And I Love To Hear You Pray,
And So Ben, This Is Jesus,
Just Checking In Today."

If this blesses you, why not pass it on. Many people
will walk in and out of your life, but only
true friends will leave footprints in your
heart...

May God hold you in the palm of His hand
And Angels watch over you..

So, FRIENDS & FAMILY, this is ME ...
"Just Checking In Today"

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

The Irish Cop...

A London lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by an Irish cop.  He thinks that he is smarter than the cop because he is a lawyer from LONDON and is certain that he has a better education then any Jock cop.  He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the Irish cop's expense!

Irish cop says, "License and registration, please."

London Lawyer says, "What for?"

Irish cop says, "Yedidnaecome to a complete stop at the stop sign."

London Lawyer says, "I slowed down, and no one was coming."

Irish cop says, "Yestilldidnaecome to a complete stop.  License and registration, please"

London Lawyer says, "What's the difference?"

Irish cop says, "The difference is yehuvtecome to complete stop, that's the law.   License and registration please!"

London Lawyer says, "If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I'll give you my license and registration and you give me the ticket.  If not, you let me go and don't give me the ticket."

Irish cop says, "Sounds fair.  Exit your vehicle, sir."

The London Lawyer exits his vehicle.

The Irish cop takes out his baton and starts beating the living s--t out of the lawyer and says, "Daeyewant me to stop, or just slowdoon?"

He thought he sent this out but could find where he did so I just this morning received it.  I think the appointment was Wednesday.  Looks like prayer continues to work!  ;)

Thanks everyone,

From the father in law, Phil Arnold:

Dr said all things considered I was going good.  I’ve lost some of my hearing, enough that I could qualify for hearing aids if I wanted them.  Wants to see me every other month for a year.  Said I may not ever get my lip back 100%.  He still thinks he got all of the cancer.  That was really just about all he learned.  Kind of a wasted trip in my opinion.  Sorry I missed you on my update.  I did tell you about my stroke didn’t I?  It is my worst problem right now.

Food for Thought

Editor’s Note:  We are not aware of any economic stimulus planned for this year, but so much of this is true that it gives one something to think about.  Not sure about the last sentence but that gives us a chance to laugh a little about the serious stuff.

Why We Must Go to Yard Sales

Sometime this year, we taxpayers will again receive another 'Economic Stimulus' payment.  This is indeed a very exciting program, and I'll explain it by using a Q & A format:

Q. What is an 'Economic Stimulus' payment?

A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.

Q. Where will the government get this money?

A. From taxpayers.

Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?

A. Only a smidgen of it.

Q. What is the purpose of this payment?

A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.

Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China?

A. Shut up.

Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the U.S. Economy by spending your stimulus check wisely:

* If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China or Sri Lanka .

* If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to the Arabs.

* If you purchase a computer, it will go to India, Taiwan or China.

* If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala.

* If you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan or Korea.

* If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to Taiwan.

* If you pay your credit cards off, or buy stock, it will go to management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.

Instead, keep the money in America by:

1) Spending it at yard sales, or

2) Going to ball games, or

3) Spending it on prostitutes, or

4) Beer or

5) Tattoos.

(These are the only American businesses still operating in the U.S.)

Conclusion:

Go to a ball game with a tattooed prostitute that you met at a yard sale and drink beer all day!

No need to thank me, I'm just glad I could be of help.
