From the Editor

As I look around at tidiness of the house I realize that “step by step” the house is slowly starting to be put back into order.  This is a long, slow process that is controlled to a great extent by the larger events, such as receiving the new office furniture, that must happen before the final reshuffling of contents that are currently still scattered all around the house.  The new washer and dryer are scheduled for delivery tomorrow and the office furniture for Thursday.  I would like to think that I can get the office back together before the weekend is over, but a lot depends on how early the furniture arrives on Thursday as Friday is almost totally consumed with doctor’s appointments.  I have my regular 4 month appointment with one of my ophthalmologists on Friday morning and must go to Reston Hospital Friday afternoon to have blood work done prior to my surgery on Monday--more about the surgery later.  Once we get the office together we have to schedule the “printer guy” from Staples to come out and set up a new wireless, network multi function printer that will replace two stand alone printers, a fax, and a copier.  It will also scan, but Carolyn has a flatbed scanner that is probably more capable at that task than the printer.  This printer is one of the latest ink jet models that is supposedly faster, and more efficient than many of the laser models.  Amazing how technology continually changes and what we thought was the “best” yesterday is no longer the best today.  I would be remiss to not mention the fact that we are so enjoying our new bath rooms.  They are such a joy to use--makes me want to stay clean all the time.

As you know from Carolyn’s addition to my editorial last week, my whole “surgery thing” was turned upside down last Wednesday when we were given additional options for dealing with this melanoma.  I must admit that it was unsettling when we found that what we had planned and expected to be over on Wednesday would eventually be shoved down the road.  I know we made the right decision to opt for the dye test, which couldn’t be done, if the melanoma was removed first.  As Carolyn said, “Since you are a worrier, we have no choice but to wait and be as certain as possible that the melanoma has not spread--and if it has have the option to remove the affected lymph nodes.”  I must admit that I’m a little concerned over the scarring that may happen if all the lymph nodes in the neck must be removed and more importantly how well the repair will work out on my face being in such proximity to my only good eye.  We just have to have confidence in the surgeon and know that his hands will be guided by God to do this important work.  Oh, don’t get me wrong I do understand the importance of getting this out of my body over the cosmetic outcome.

We were told last week by the doctor that he was optimistic that we could get the surgery scheduled in the next month--which didn’t sound soon enough for me.  After talking to the scheduler last Friday it became apparent that the doctor only does surgery on Mondays.  We then quickly decided that March 10 wasn’t too bad a date.  After looking at what we had scheduled for this week, we decided that March 10 was really the most realistic date to allow our lives to go on in a semi normal fashion.  By the time I sit down to write my next editorial it should be all over other than waiting for the final pathology.  I know that many of you have kept us in your thoughts and prayers during this time.  For that we are very thankful.  Please continue to keep us close until this is over.

I hope that Mike is right and he is able to get the office back together before the weekend is over.  Three weeks without our desktop computers and my desk is a long time.  Mike is the one who takes care of the computers.  I will help by setting up the files for him.  I find putting the newsletter together on my laptop is not the easiest.  I definitely have issues keeping the bookwork done without a desk with all the papers I need.  I just hope I haven’t missed anything important during this time.  I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the furniture tomorrow as I know the desktop space I am going to have is going to be great.  I should be able to accomplish all of those things I have been putting off because I used the excuse I didn’t have space to work on it.  Only time will tell if I get that next recipe book done as well as several other things I think I should do.

Thoughts from the Squirrel Lair

LET US HELP YOU PACK

FYI in case you have not seen this from a woman who lives on a small horse
ranch in Western Colorado & who is married to a former US Marine.

Her son was a US Marine who survived Desert Storm & there are other
US Marine + one USAF grandson in her family tree, but evidently she is the only singer.  This lady has a really good voice, and she's using it... and a really good idea!

The latest Colorado country song.

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Cooperton Valley Picture Trail

The “Cooperton Valley” Picture Trail site has been renewed for all to enjoy.  Thanks to Karen (Johnson) Mason for funding this site for the coming year.  This site has many pictures from past Cooperton School reunions.  We hope that you will find these photos interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past (or if you have and wondered where it went).  Go to http://www.picturetrail.com/coopertonvalley to visit the site.

Interesting Tidbits

It’s Just Paper

By Canadian paper artist, Calvin Nicholls.

There is nothing simple or ordinary about his paper art.

Where we would simply use a piece of paper and a pair of scissors, Calvin uses everything you could possibly think of to carve, cut and rip perfect details onto his creations.

The motifs are all wildlife, and that must be one of the hardest categories of things to make with paper since there are sometimes impossible details on animals.

These details are amazing!

I can't even fathom the time it must have taken to create these masterpieces of art.

Church Ladies with Typewriters

They're Back!  Those wonderful Church Bulletins!  Thank God for church ladies with typewriters.  These sentences (with all the BLOOPERS) actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced in church services:

The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals.

The sermon this morning: 'Jesus Walks on the Water.'  The sermon tonight: 'Searching for Jesus.'

Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale.  It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house.  Bring your husbands.

Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community.  Smile at someone who is hard to love.  Say 'Hell' to someone who doesn't care much about you.

Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help.

Miss Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again,' giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.

For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs.

Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir.  They need all the help they can get.

Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church.  So ends a friendship that began in their school days.

A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall.  Music will follow.

At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What Is Hell?'  Come early and listen to our choir practice.

Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones.

Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled.  Proceeds will be used to cripple children.

Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered.

The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility.

Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM - prayer and medication to follow.

The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind.  They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.

This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church.  Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin.

Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 AM.  All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B. S. Is done.

The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the Congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday.

Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM.  Please use the back door.

The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM.  The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy.

Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the First Presbyterian Church.  Please use large double door at the side entrance.

The Associate Minister unveiled the church's new campaign slogan last Sunday: 'I Upped My Pledge - Up Yours.

Food for Thought

$100 Bill

It's a slow day in the small town of Pumphandle and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody is living on credit.

A tourist visiting the area drives through town, stops at the motel, and lays a $100 bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs to pick one for the night.

As soon as he walks upstairs, the motel owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher.

(Stay with this..... and pay attention)

The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer.

The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to his supplier, the Co-op.

The guy at the Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her "services" on credit.

The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the hotel Owner.

The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the traveler will not suspect anything.

At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, picks up the $100 bill and leaves.

No one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole town now thinks that they are out of debt and there is a false atmosphere of optimism and glee.

And that, my friends, is how a "stimulus package" works!
