Well, football season is
finally behind us, the Olympics start on Thursday, and “March Madness” is just
around the corner and oh yes, the Washington Capitals are still playing hockey
and have a chance to make the playoffs.
So goes the world for my “sports loving” wife. If you are a Seahawks fan you were probably
very pleased with the Super Bowl--my wife wasn’t. I have to admit that this Super Bowl had all
the elements for a “super” match up and from that perspective, it did most
certainly disappoint.
Interestingly, I’ve put a
little thought into the impact of such a game.
My thoughts, from a general perspective, apply to all matches, super or
not. As we see all of the hype that is
presented prior to a Super Bowl, we tend to overlook the fact that when that
final whistle is blown, there’s going to be one very excited team and one
that’s very dejected. This is always the
case. There can’t be two winners--one
winner and one loser. Are some loses
more devastating than others, absolutely?
I think that this one in particular may have hurt a little more than
normal. I don’t think anyone, whether a
Bronco’s fan or not, questions the ability of a quarterback like Peyton
Manning. Along with his ability, he is a
very eloquent and respectful individual in all of his activities, on and off
the field alike. He in particular had so
much at stake in this game. This could
possibly have been his last opportunity to win a Super Bowl (from two different
franchises) and match the record of his brother. In sixty minutes, his career flashed before
his eyes and the ending was not as he had planned. I can’t help but feel for him. I will say that what I saw of him after the
game he handled it just as I would have expected--with class and eloquence
although we all know he was burning inside with frustration at this result.
I think the events of this
Super Bowl for Peyton exemplify events in life that can and may apply to many
of us. We all have challenges in our
lives that do not play out the way we hoped they would--some much worse than
others. The lesson that we must learn
from our “Super Bowl failure” is that not everything in life is perfect. My Dad told me that time after time. That’s because I was always striving for
perfection and his “bar” wasn’t quite as high as mine. I did listen to him, but didn’t pay much
attention, because I still tried to achieve perfection. We need to note that Peyton did not attain
perfection and was obviously very disappointed, but he will set a good example
by “moving on.” We too need to follow
his example as we run up against such failures.
Our strategy should be to put our failures behind us, pull ourselves up
by our “boot straps” and move on without lowering our expectations for the next
challenge in life that we face.

Remembering…
A Poem I Can Relate To!!
I remember the bologna of my
childhood,
And the bread that we cut
with a knife,
When the children helped
with the housework
And the men went to work not
the wife.
The cheese never needed a
fridge,
And the bread was so crusty
and hot,
The children were seldom
unhappy
And the wife was content
with her lot.
I remember the milk from the
bottle,
With the yummy cream on the
top,
Our dinner came hot from the
over,
And not from a freezer; or
the shop.
The kids were a lot more
contented,
They didn’t need money for
kicks,
Just a game with their
friends in the road,
And sometimes the Saturday
flicks.
I remember the shop on the
corner,
Where pennies for cookies
were sold
Do you think I’m a bit too
nostalgic?
Or is it…I’m just getting
old?
I remember the outhouse was
the toilet,
And the bogey man came in
the night,
It wasn’t the least but
funny
Going “out there” with no
light.
The interesting items we
perused,
From the newspapers cut into
squares,
And hung on a peg in the
outhouse,
It took little to keep us
amused.
The baths were taken in a #3
wash tub,
With plenty of rich foamy
suds
But the ironing seemed never
ending
As Mama pressed everyone’s
‘duds.’
I remember the slap on my
backside,
And the taste of soap if I
swore
Anorexia and diets weren’t
heard of
And we hadn’t much choice
what we wore.
Do you think that bruised
our ego”
Or our initiative was
destroyed?
We ate what was put on the
table
And I think life was better
enjoyed.

A Teacher Helps A Student
Anyone who has ever dressed
a child will love this)
Did you hear about the teacher who was helping one of her pupils put on
his boots?
He asked for help and she could see why. Even with her pulling, and him
pushing, the little boots still didn't want to go on. By the time they got
the second boot on, she had worked up a sweat.
She almost cried when the little boy said, 'Teacher, they're on the wrong
feet.'
She looked, and sure enough, they were.
Unfortunately, it wasn't any easier pulling the boots off, than it
was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as, together; they
worked to get the boots back on, this time on the correct feet.
He then announced, 'These aren't my boots.'
She bit her tongue, rather than get right in his face and scream,
'Why didn't you say so?' like she wanted to.
Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots
off his little feet. No sooner had they got the boots off when he
said, ‘They’re my brother's boots. But my Mom made me wear 'em today.'
Now she didn't know if she should laugh or cry. But she mustered up what grace
and courage she had left to wrestle the boots BACK onto his feet again.
Helping him into his coat, she asked, 'Now, where are your mittens?'
He said, 'I stuffed 'em in the toes of my boots.'
She'll be eligible for parole in three years.

Hey y'all. Kathy talked to her dad last night and said he
was sounded like he felt pretty good with minimal soreness. I had asked
him in an email yesterday so I would have a written response to pass along and
this morning the following is what I had received, it does not surprise me
knowing him. :) Geary McDowell
From Phil
Arnold:
I’ve got some bruising showing up that I haven’t seen before and
muscles that are sore or cramping when I turn certain ways. I guess the operation was like a workout. You don’t feel the effects of working new
muscles until a few days later. I’ve
also got a small, open sore on the back of my head that Karen says is
consistent with what happens when they leave you strapped down to the table in one
position for long lengths of time, and a muscle right in line with it in my
neck that cramps up real hard when I turn my head a certain way. All in all I think I’m doing surprisingly well
and am a lot more comfortable than I ever expected to be. However, I’d say today is the worst day yet as
far as hurting and feeling bad even tho it is not as bad as I expected it might
be.
I’m debating about church tomorrow. I really need to put in an appearance but it
might be pushing it a bit. My neck looks
like someone tried to cut my head off with a dull knife. That is where they took the rest of the lymph
nodes out of that area to check them for cancer. Oh man I hope they got it all. If it did get down in those lymph nodes taking
the main facial nerve wouldn’t have helped that area any. Since they scraped the cancer off of the
parotid gland before they removed the gland I’d most likely think that is where
it might start back up unless it got away from them because they waited so long
to go after this last part that they knew about.
Oh well, I’m sure if the Lord wants it stopped, He’ll stop it and
there isn’t much I can do about it either way.
I appreciate all you guys taking the time to come up and hang
around the operating room until I got out of there. I know there were other things you could have
been doing with your time but it was good of you to come and I appreciate it
and Karen and Brittany needed the moral support. They sure have been a big help to me.
Have a nice day.
Phil
Food for Thought
Quote from Abraham Lincoln
You cannot bring about
prosperity by discouraging thrift. You
cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling
down the wage payer. You cannot further
the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poor by destroying the
rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by
spending more than you earn. You cannot
build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and
independence. You cannot help men permanently
by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.
