From the Editor

Christmas is closing in on us.  What a joyous time if you have little ones--whether your children, grandchildren, or the children of friends.  Nothing excites little ones like the thoughts of Christmas.  Oh I know, I’m leaning to the commercial side of Christmas.  Well, that’s ok too because that’s not what the rest of this editorial is about.  It is leaning toward the “real meaning of the season.”  As I lead into this discussion let me say that this is one of the true joys of being retired--not having to be politically correct as directed by my former employer to NOT say “Merry Christmas” but instead the more politically correct greeting (to them) of “Happy Holidays.”  I must say that even then, I crossed that line quite often and strayed from “Happy Holidays” to my much preferred “Merry Christmas.”  I’m surprised with my laxness that I didn’t end up on the “hot seat” in the boss’ office.  Let me say that with my greeting to you of “Merry Christmas” I’m not trying to slight Hanukah, Kwanzaa, or any other celebrated holiday or season of your belief at this time of year.  It’s just “my” greeting and I will gladly accept your greeting referencing the holiday you choose to celebrate.  II believe my feelings are wonderfully demonstrated in the following video strongly relaying my sentiments: (When the video ends, click on the “X” in the upper right to return to the newsletter)

“Say Merry Christmas” -- Carrie Rinderer

So often with the commercialization of Christmas, it’s easy to overlook the fact that Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ Birthday--the REAL reason for Christmas.  Yes, I know that to little ones this may be secondary in their thoughts of Christmas, but I believe that their potential, temporary placement of this part of Christmas in the “second slot” will keep this fact close at hand and enable their future understanding of the “reason” and allow them to correctly prioritize what Christmas is really about.  Now, that said, many little ones, with early training understand that from the start and in fact become a little confused at who they expect to see when they go to the mall at Christmas time.  The following video demonstrates this eloquently and makes even those of us in the older generation take a step back and smile at this young man’s question: (When the video ends, click on the “X” in the upper right to return to the newsletter)

I’m always looking for new Christmas songs (to join the old standards) and I believe that the two presented here are great additions.  Both are available from iTunes and I’m sure other locations on the web.  I have them on my iPod and enjoy both of them immensely.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

After reading Mike’s editorial, I thought I would share with you what our church is doing as part of the Christmas Eve Service.  There will be a mini-Christmas pageant with the children being the angels and shepherds and the tweens will be the narrators.  After the mini-Christmas pageant, the children will have a Birthday Party for Jesus.  Since we always bring presents when we go to birthday parties and this party will be no exception.  Attendees are asked to bring a present wrapped in birthday wrapping paper and put a tag on it marked for a boy or a girl and an age range.  These presents will be taken to an area homeless shelter so that boys and girls who are there for their birthdays will be sure to get a present.  I had not seen this done before but thought it was such a great way to celebrate the birthday of Jesus and help others at the same time.

Is Santa Claus Real?

As children reach a certain age, they begin to ask questions like, “Is Santa Claus real?” and “Are Mom and Dad really Santa?” You may have seen letters similar to the one below going around on Facebook. This is actually the original, penned by Martha Brockenbrough from Seattle. She wrote it to her daughter Lucy in 2009.

Dear Lucy,

Thank you for your letter. You asked a very good question: “Are you Santa?”

I know you’ve wanted the answer to this question for a long time, and I’ve had to give it careful thought to know just what to say.

The answer is no. I am not Santa. There is no one Santa.

I am the person who fills your stockings with presents, though. I also choose and wrap the presents under the tree, the same way my mom did for me, and the same way her mom did for her. (And yes, Daddy helps, too.)

I imagine you will someday do this for your children, and I know you will love seeing them run down the stairs on Christmas morning. You will love seeing them sit under the tree, their small faces lit with Christmas lights.

This won’t make you Santa, though.

Santa is bigger than any person, and his work has gone on longer than any of us have lived. What he does is simple, but it is powerful. He teaches children how to have belief in something they can’t see or touch.

It’s a big job, and it’s an important one. Throughout your life, you will need this capacity to believe: in yourself, in your friends, in your talents and in your family. You’ll also need to believe in things you can’t measure or even hold in your hand. Here, I am talking about love, that great power that will light your life from the inside out, even during its darkest, coldest moments.

Santa is a teacher, and I have been his student, and now you know the secret of how he gets down all those chimneys on Christmas Eve: he has help from all the people whose hearts he’s filled with joy.

With full hearts, people like Daddy and me take our turns helping Santa do a job that would otherwise be impossible.

So, no. I am not Santa. Santa is love and magic and hope and happiness. I’m on his team, and now you are, too.

I love you and I always will.

This is an interesting concept for a Christmas tree.  However, very few of us could have one of these.

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Snow

Just got off the phone with a friend who lives in British Columbia.

He said that since early this morning the snow has been nearly waist high and is still falling.  The minus 20+ temperature is dropping hourly and the wind is increasing to near gale force.

His wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare.

He says that if it gets much worse he may have to let her in.
