From the Editor

I think winter has arrived and it may be the “real deal” this year.  I wasted my time last year by putting on my snow blower.  I never used it.  I really hate it when that happens.  A little snow is always good to let you know that it’s not still summer.  Our “storm” this week didn’t turn out to be what the “weather peeps” were forecasting and that’s ok.  It did pressure me into getting the mower off and the snow blower on.  Actually, even though the snow didn’t accumulate to the 4 to 6 inches predicted, I did use the snow blower to remove a couple or three inches of slush from the drive.  With the temperature being 18 degrees this morning, I’m sure we’ll think that was a good thing as we travel away from home to make my 10:45 am eye refraction appointment.  Additionally, they are forecasting potential snow this coming Saturday.  Who knows, they’re forecasting low on this one and it could just as easily go the other way.  In the weather people’s defense, I really think that forecasting weather along the coast is a little more difficult than we may want to admit.

With the pool closed, RV tucked away, leaves done, and the snow blower on we are definitely ready to glide into the “shorter than we would like” winter’s rest.  I do admit that I truly enjoy this time of year.  Maybe that’s because I’m just inherently lazy.   Whatever, I do enjoy mornings like this having some “me time” while Nana gets in a few extra snoozes.  A little coffee, a lighted Christmas tree, a “fake fire” in the fireplace, (gas logs--look nice and are a lot less work), the ranting left on Morning Joe, and the “fair and balanced” right on Fox News--“that’s how I roll.”

Winter is just one of the four seasons we enjoy here in Virginia.  Yes, it may be my favorite, but I enjoy the others as well.  Fall always moves up on my list with the anticipation of what kind of “color” we’ll have in that particular fall.  I’ve yet to decide if wet or dry times make for better color and interesting the color is usually always better than I think it’s going to be as fall begins.  I suspect that I just get in a hurry and expect “color” before it is actually time.

I think we have our hands pretty well wrapped around our upcoming bathroom renovations.  It seems that on a regular basis we get new updates from our contractor on the cost.  It’s interesting that they all refer to cost overruns rather than savings.  Imagine that.  I ask Carolyn, “What do you think and she says doesn’t surprise me.”  That’s because she, as far as I know, has “pulled out the stops” and done exactly what she wanted to do.  That’s what I want her to do--she deserves it.  These are the first bathroom renovations in 37 years--and I’m sure the last.  A majority of the changes in our master bath are centered in changes that will make it more user friendly for us as we move further into our “Golden Years.”

I’d like to close out this editorial with a request for each of you who regularly spend a little time each day speaking with “the man upstairs” to remember our Daughter Karen in your prayers.  I’m sure that most of you are aware that she was in the middle of the Navy Yard shootings.  She wasn’t injured physically, but has many, many mental scars.  She is recovering slowly and we firmly believe that her recovery will be complete, but she still has a long road ahead of her.  Once more as parents we were not “schooled” on how to assist a “child” who has witnessed such a tragedy other than to let her know we’re here for whatever she needs.  Our roll as parents never ends.

What We See

A young couple moves into a new neighborhood.  The next morning while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside.  "That laundry is not very clean; she doesn't know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap."  Her husband looks on, remaining silent.  Every time her neighbor hangs her wash to dry, the young woman makes the same comments.  A month later, the woman is surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and says to her husband, "Look, she's finally learned how to wash correctly.  I wonder who taught her this?  "The husband replies, "I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows."  And so it is with life... What we see when watching others depends on the clarity of the window through which we look.

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Cooperton Valley Picture Trail

The “Cooperton Valley” Picture Trail site has been renewed for all to enjoy.  Thanks to Karen (Johnson) Mason for funding this site for the coming year.  This site has many pictures from past Cooperton School reunions.  We hope that you will find these photos interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past (or if you have and wondered where it went).  Go to http://www.picturetrail.com/coopertonvalley to visit the site.

WHY MEN ARE NEVER DEPRESSED

Men Are Just Happier People --

What do you expect from such simple creatures?

Your last name stays put.

The garage is all yours.

Wedding plans take care of themselves.

Chocolate is just another snack...

You can never be pregnant.

You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park.

You can wear NO shirt to a water park.

Car mechanics tell you the truth.

The world is your urinal.

You never have to drive to another gas station restroom because this one is just too icky.

You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt.

Same work, more pay.

Wrinkles add character.

Wedding dress $5000.  Tux rental $100.

People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them.

New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet.

One mood all the time.

Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat.

You know stuff about tanks.

A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase.

You can open all your own jars.

If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend.

Your underwear is $8.95 for a three-pack.

Three pairs of shoes are more than enough.

Everything on your face stays its original color.

The same hairstyle lasts for years, even decades.

You only have to shave your face and neck.

You can play with toys all your life.

One wallet and one pair of shoes -- one color for all seasons.

You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look.

You can 'do' your nails with a pocket knife.

You have freedom of choice concerning growing a mustache.

You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24 in 25 minutes.

Men Are Just Happier People

NICKNAMES

If Laura, Kate and Sarah go out for lunch, they will call each other Laura, Kate and Sarah.  If Mike, Dave and John go out, they will affectionately refer to each other as Fat Boy, Bubba and Wildman.

EATING OUT

When the bill arrives, Mike, Dave and John will each throw in $20, even though it's only for $32.50.  None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually admit they want change back.  When the girls get their bill, out come the pocket calculators...YEP!!!

MONEY

A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs.  A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn't need but it's on sale.

BATHROOMS

A man has six items in his bathroom:  toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel.

The average number of items in the typical woman's bathroom is 337.  A man would not be able to identify more than 20 of these items.

ARGUMENTS

A woman has the last word in any argument.  Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.

FUTURE

A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband.  A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife.

MARRIAGE

A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't.  A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, but she does.

DRESSING UP

A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the trash, answer the phone, read a book, and get the mail.  A man will dress up for weddings and funerals.

NATURAL

Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed.  Women somehow deteriorate during the night.

OFFSPRING

Ah, children.  A woman knows all about her children.  She knows about dentist appointments and romances, best friends, favorite foods, secret fears and hopes and dreams.  A man is vaguely aware of some short people living in the house.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

A married man should forget his mistakes.  There's no use in two people remembering the same thing!

SO, send this to the women who have a sense of humor and who can handle it and to the men who will enjoy reading it.

Update on Phil Arnold

I was going to post the news after we talked him last night.  He had not eaten much the past week or so after they told him the hernia was wrapping part of an intestine.  He came through the surgery fine and went home a couple of hours afterwards and they knocked him totally out!

Below is part of an email he sent.

Geary McDowell

OKC called me today.  Here is my first appointment (for someone else to work on his Cancer) on the 23rd at the OU Medical Center.

 9:45 a.m. on Dec 23

I’m sorer than I expected to be after the surgery but I’m up and running.

Ever thing seems to work and I’m going to have a big steak for supper.

Man, I’m ready to eat something.

Hi Mr. Michael May,

It made me laugh when you said --My condolences go out to  them -- In a good way though.

I just got in a little bit ago after 3 hours outside.  I think there were 5-6 inches here in OKC where I live.  I live on the north side of the street where the sun is not there much so unless I clear off the snow manually myself I will have snow many days after the south side driveways have already melted away.

I also cleared dog paths in the back yard for my dog and a few spots for her to do her potty business, then cleared my long driveway out to the street and up to the garage door and now have the car in the garage, cleared my walkway in front of the house.

While the sun is still out I plan to go back out and work on clearing some more of the snow/ice from the driveway edge out in the street.

Supposedly tomorrow is the triple dog dare willie stair climb downtown event.  I just hope that today all the roads can be somewhat cleared by the city so I can use those cleared roads to go downtown to the event.

Here's the link if you are really bored:

http://www.downtownindecember.com/LittleWilliesTripleDogDare.aspx

I am the only one in the block that clears their driveway even out into the middle of the street.  I want to have a clear road to back into my driveway so I clear what roadway my car needs to get me safely into the driveway.
