We made it home from
We’ve just finished a great
trip down to
I’m trying to get in the
holiday spirit. My biggest regret for
the holidays is that we are seldom successful in having both of our children
and their families home with us. I guess
that’s asking too much with their busy schedules, but I hope the time comes that
they are able to make that happen before they realize that’s no longer an
option. Obviously, we have the option to
be either here with Karen’s family or in
Thanksgiving will most
likely come and go before you read this and we have no idea when we are going
to celebrate with Karen, Mark, and Paige.
I assume plans for that will happen today. I hope your plans are firm and that the
weather does not impact on them. Enjoy
the time that you are able to spend with your family and loved ones. From both of us to all of you, “Happy
Thanksgiving!”

I
need to add to Mike’s editorial above.
We do know now when we are having Thanksgiving Dinner—about noontime on
Thursday. Karen, Mark, and Paige will be
here to share a traditional dinner. I
will not make a thing or two that are favorites of Kevin. I will try to be sure that Mike, Karen, and
Mark have what they like. I don’t
believe that Paige has yet developed a taste for anything that she thinks is a
must for Thanksgiving. We will definitely
have too much food and will have leftovers.
Thankfully, Mike likes turkey and dressing so he will be happy to have
leftovers. We will definitely have a ham
as well as Karen and Mark prefer that to turkey. Karen does like my homemade dressing but Mark
prefers Stove Top so will make a box of that for him. Mike likes giblet gravy and the kids prefer
it plain. Mike usually doesn’t get his
giblet gravy but plan to make it for him this year. So that means two pans of gravy. It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving if Mike didn’t
have Corn and Oysters and Mark likes that as well. Now Karen and Paige would prefer another
vegetable so there we go again—must plan to have green beans for them. Mike likes a cranberry salad that his Mom
always made. He doesn’t always get it as
Kevin likes an orange salad which I always make when he is around. Since he isn’t here this year, Mike will have
his cranberry salad. Now the dilemma is
whether I make the pea salad my Mom and I always liked with turkey and
dressing. I don’t remember the last time
I made it as I always forgo it to make what the rest of the family like. I may just have to make that this year in
remembrance of Mom since this is my first Thanksgiving without her. Decisions, decisions. And yes, lots of work but it will be worth
it.

Note: This is another article from Derl Williams. I
found it quite interesting given the many years I accompanied my parents on
custom wheat harvest. I am sure the
young farmers of today would have a hard time relating to the work it took to harvest
crops in the late 1940’s. Enjoy! cnm
Dad & Dobber’s
Combine
By
harvest time in the spring of 1946, daddy had purchased a 1937 Allis Chalmers
combine, with a five-foot sickle and eighteen bushel grain bin. It was driven by the power take off of our
1942 SC Case tractor. The few settings
required after the initial set-up of the combine, were made by the operator
from the tractor’s seat. Dad first cut
wheat on the home-place then another smaller patch of rented land adjacent to
Middle Otter Creek. While Dad ran the
combine, Jack and I hauled the grain to the Cold Springs Elevator in a
four-wheel, flat-bed trailer with 12 inch sideboards. If my calculations are correct a reasonable
load would be about two hoppers full, or 36 bushels.
I'm
not sure how much custom cuttings daddy did that spring, but do recall one such
cutting south of Cold Springs a mile or so.
Mainly I remember the large dinner served us field-hands and how
secluded the farm house and out buildings were.
The farmstead was very picturesque and reminded me of what one would
expect to find some hundred years earlier.
Even the entry gate into the hog-wire enclosed front yard was made from
small tree saplings.
For
whatever reason—I suspect our cotton crop was crying for attention—long before
wheat harvest was complete; daddy sold the combine to a near neighbor, Alva
"Dobber" Cook. I was present when their paths crossed
shortly after the sale and Dobber telling Dad he had
already cut the grain on their place and had jobs lined up that once complete,
he would have earned enough money to pay for the combine.
A
few years back at
Well,
armed with that information—and with Dobber Cook’s
permission—on our next annual Memorial Day grave decoration outing, we siblings
stopped to pay the old combine a belated visit.
However, after walking the grounds repeatedly the much coveted combine
still eluded our search; and later found we were looking in the wrong
direction. One of these days I’d like to
have another go at finding the old combine; might have to see if Dobber, in a vehicle from his covey of Model A’s, could
show us the way.
Thoughts from

THE LORD'S BASEBALL GAME
Freddy and the Lord stood by to observe a baseball game. The Lord's team
was playing Satan's team. The Lord's
team was at bat, the score was tied zero to zero, and it was the bottom of
the 9th inning with two outs. They continued to watch as a batter stepped
up to the plate named 'Love.' Love swung
at the first pitch and hit a single, because 'Love never fails.'
The next batter was named Faith, who also got a single because Faith works
with Love. The next batter up was
named Godly Wisdom. Satan wound up and threw the first pitch.
Godly Wisdom looked it over and let it pass: Ball one. Three more pitches and Godly Wisdom
walked because he never swings at what Satan throws.
The bases were now loaded. The Lord then turned to Freddy and told
him He was now going to bring in His star player. Up to the plate
stepped Grace. Freddy said, 'He sure doesn't look like much!'
Satan's whole team relaxed
when they saw Grace. Thinking he had won
the game, Satan wound up and fired his first pitch. To the shock of
everyone, Grace hit the ball harder than anyone had ever seen! But Satan
was not worried; his center fielder let very few get by. He went up for
the ball, but it went right through his glove, hit him on the head and
sent him crashing on the ground; the roaring crowds went wild as the ball
continued over the fence ... for a home run!
The Lord's team won!
The Lord then asked Freddy if he knew why Love, Faith and Godly Wisdom could
get on base but couldn't win the game. Freddy answered that he didn't
know why.
The Lord explained, 'If your
love, faith and wisdom had won the game, you would think you had
done it by yourself. Love, Faith and
Wisdom will get you on base but only My Grace can get you Home.
'For by Grace are you saved,
it is a gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast.'
Ephesians 2:8-9
Psalm 84:11, 'For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give
grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk
uprightly.'

HOW TO TREAT WOMEN
On a transatlantic flight, a plane passed through a severe storm.
The turbulence was awful, and things went from bad to worse when one wing was
struck by lightning. One woman in particular lost it.
Screaming, she stood up in the front of the plane "I'm too
young to die," she wailed. Then she yelled, "Well, if I'm going to
die, I want my last minutes on earth to be memorable! Is there anyone on this
plane who can make me feel like a WOMAN?"
For a moment, there was silence. Everyone had forgotten his or her own peril.
Eyes riveted, they all stared at the desperate woman in the front of the plane.
Then a man from
Slowly, he started to walk up the aisle, unbuttoning his shirt, one button at a
time. No one moved. He removed his shirt. Muscles rippled across his chest. She
gasped...
He said, "Iron this -- and then get me a beer."

This is the latest on Kathy Arnold McDowell's father. I did
NOT realize he was already going to the Cancer Institute of America, so he is
getting the best care. Interesting. Thanks for the prayers and
please continue, he is one tough character!
Geary McDowell
Got the results of my PET scan today. A lot of the cancer in the side of my face is
gone but I still have a little left. However,
the area that is left shows up 60% brighter than it did on August 7 when I had
my last scan. That means what I’ve got
left is a good bit more dense than it was. I guess that means the cells are 60% more
rotten than they were. Not good.
They are scheduling me for an MRI to see if they can get to the
cancer that remains, with surgery. They
don’t like to do surgery on me because of my heart but they may not have a
choice. Chemo and Radiation haven’t
gotten completely rid of this stuff. I
think I mentioned that I’ve had 63 radiation treatments but I’ve still got
cancer.
Talking about not liking to do surgery on me; they are going to do
hernia surgery on me Dec 4th. My cardiologist gave them the go ahead. Maybe they don’t have to put me under as
completely with hernia surgery as they do with the cancer surgery. I don’t know, but I’d rather take a chance on
my heart stopping than leaving the cancer in there. I’ve been messing with it for 3 years now.
Fortunately I’m still not in any pain and don’t have any
discomfort. However I do confess to
being old and ugly.
