From the Editor

We’re still running in circles after returning home from our “trek” to Atlanta and the NASCAR Labor Day Race.  We had a great time with our kids and our extended Atlanta Motor Speedway family.  We’ve been trying to get the RV unloaded, laundry done, and van maintenance done to be ready for Kevin and family to arrive later today or in the morning.  It’s not comforting to say that here I am on Thursday morning just starting my editorial for this week’s paper.

After two weeks of political conventions I’m astounded how Party “A” can say, “It is so” and Party B can say, “It is not so” and we are left to figure out if it is “so” or “not” on our own.  When you break it down, the conventions are actually a continual 2 or 3 day political ad.  The important part of this is that they say political ads only change the minds of people who haven’t a clue over what the facts really are.  So, in general, the last one to speak (that would be the Democrats this election) has the greatest opportunity of leaving a lasting impression on the ones who simply don’t know or understand what’s going on.  Oh yes, lest I forget, how can we determine what “facts” are actually “facts?”  With such a wealth of information at our fingertips it should be easy, but as one of my professors back at Kansas State used to say, “Just because you see it in print, doesn’t mean it’s true.” Well, I didn’t answer the question did I?

Looking at the RNC we have to admit that Isaac had a major impact on their program causing shifts and cancellations in their original schedule and a shortened convention.  This was obviously not to their benefit.  I do think it is appropriate to see the rising importance of the candidates’ wives in this election.  This so eloquently demonstrates the major role that wives have in their husband’s success--not just in elections, but in life.  We’ve all known that for a long time and I think it is only appropriate that they are now getting the recognition they so deserve.  I feel and relish the role that Carolyn plays in my life on a daily basis.  She is my GPS.  Ann Romney did a fantastic job in her speech and I think dramatically helped improve the favorability of her husband as a formidable candidate.  Chris Christy, in my opinion, got a little “bum press” over talking so much about his accomplishments.  I think I understood where he was heading--he was trying to indicate that tough decisions can be made and one can receive support for them (as he did) if presented properly--the kind of tough decisions that Romney would have to make if elected and challenged with trying to turn the economy around.  I must say, I like the guy (Christy).  Unfortunately, as a Republican, I did not see the “splash” in the RNC that I did in the DNC.  Possibly Democrats are just better at “Partying” than Republicans.

One thing that you must keep in mind as you watch these conventions and listen to the “roar of the crowd.”  This is a totally supportive and biased crowd.  They NEVER considered voting for the opponent.  So the fact that they are excited means NOTHING.  What they do hope is that if the convention speeches impress them, they will also impress those undecided and uninformed viewers.  Remember, last impressions are lasting.  Again, advantage Democrats.

As far as the DNC goes, it too had some really powerful keynotes.  Michelle Obama was quite good and that’s something coming from me as I am not a fan of hers.  I certainly won’t go in detail here of why so don’t look for it further down.  The real standout to me was her comments over how poor they were as they started out their marriage.  I reference the hole in the floorboard of the car and Barack’s favorite coffee table that he got from the dump.  I have one question.  Given this start with loans for college, no substantial jobs--a Community Organizer in Chicago, and a brief stent as a documented non-performing Senator, how did Obama get so rich (estimated net worth of $11.8 million in 2010)?  At least I know how Romney got rich.  No, contrary to the opinion of some that it came from his father, I think it more likely falls under, “He got it the old fashioned way, he earned it.”

Now let’s look at William Jefferson Clinton (a.k.a. “Slick Willy”).  Yes, he did deliver an impressive marathon speech last night.  WJC is the “Voice of the Democratic Party.”  While he’s purported as slick, smart, and an accomplished statesman, he’s certainly not much of a role model.  Interesting that people (especially “Democratic People”) appear to have forgotten or have forgiven the fact that he was impeached, engaged in an embarrassing sexual act with an intern--under his desk in the Oval Office of all places, and irreparably shamed the office of the President.  What a great example for our children.  He is truly someone to look up to.  NOT!

I’ll now step off of my political soapbox and retreat to the Keurig for another cup of coffee.

How Great Thou Art

This clip is one of the most amazing and imaginative talents on the web!  For those who are not so geeky, this singer had to record each of the tracks one at a time, and had to get the timing just perfect in order for it to work.  LOTS of detailed technology went into this.  And the song itself is beautiful.  So, turn up your volume, maximize your screen, click on the link below, then sit back and enjoy!

PS Val Harvey, this guy might “trump” you today on “How Great Thou Art”--but not “back in the day”--ESPECIALLY if there were 4 of you (you’ll understand when you see the video) --  mlm

Billy Graham’s Prayer for Our Nation

This man sure has a good view of what’s happening to our country!

“Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance.  We know Your Word says, ‘Woe to those who call evil good,’ but that is exactly what we have done.  We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.  We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.  We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.  We have killed our unborn and called it choice.  We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.  We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem.  We have abused power and called it politics.  We have coveted our neighbor’s possessions and called it ambition.  We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.  We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.  Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from sin and set us free.  Amen!”

With the Lord’s help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we once again can be called ‘One nation under God!’

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Cooperton Valley Picture Trail

At the request of Karen (Johnson) Mason, we “tracked down,” removed from PictureTrail archive, and renewed the “Cooperton Valley” site for all to enjoy.  Thanks to Karen for funding this site for the coming year.  This site has many pictures from past Cooperton School reunions.  We hope that you will find these photos interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past (or if you have and wondered where it went).  Karen, again thanks so much for bringing this site to our attention.  Go to http://www.picturetrail.com/coopertonvalley to visit the site.

Home Again

The editor’s returned home this week after spending a week at the camp grounds of Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS).  What a fun time!  Karen, Mark, and Paige arrived on Wednesday to join us and really set up the camp site.  You can only imagine the camp site at a NASCAR track unless you have actually had the experience.  We park our RV’s so that the doors and awnings face each other with enough room between the awnings to set up party tents.  The ground is covered with mats—of course they are black and white racing mats.  Tables, lounge chairs, a gas grill, a huge fan to cool the great outdoors, and plenty of ice chests to cool our drinks make up our outdoor camping area.  Of course, we have to “dry camp” as there is on power, water or sewer—just the capacity your RV has on board.  After 6 years of doing this, we are pretty good at it and have a great time.

Kevin, Brenda, Raegan, and Parker joined us on Saturday.  We were so glad to have our entire family together and for Parker to meet his Virginia aunt, uncle, and cousin for the first time.  Paige loved playing with Raegan.  This Nana and PaPa couldn’t have been happier.

In addition to having the family together, we always enjoy visiting with the many friends we have made over the years at the campgrounds.  The same people park all around us so it is “old home week.”  All of those camping around us decided to have a camp pool to pick the winner of the race.  Mike picked a driver for me and threw in the money.  He made a great pick and I won the pool which was a healthy amount.  I thought it would help with the gas expenses but he insists I am to buy something for myself with it.  Thanks Mike for making a great choice for me.  I will let you do that again.

Florida

A Florida senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership.  Taking off down the road, he pushed it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left.  “Amazing,” he thought as he flew down I-95, pushing the pedal even more.

Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a Florida State Trooper, blue lights flashing and sire blaring.  He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, and then 120.  Suddenly he thought, “What am I doing?  I’m too old for this!” and pulled over to await the trooper’s arrival.

Pulling in behind him the trooper got out of his vehicle and walked up to the Corvette.  He looked at his watch, then said, “Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes.  Today is Friday.  If you can give me a new reason for speeding—a reason I’ve never heard—I’ll let you go.”

The old gentlemen paused then said, “Three years ago, my wife ran off with a Florida State Trooper.  I thought you were bringing her back.”

“Have a good day, Sir,” replied the trooper.

Georgia

The owner of a golf course in Georgia was confused about paying an invoice, so he decided to ask his secretary for some mathematical help.  He called her into his office and said, “Y’all graduated from the University of Georgia and I need some help.  If I wuz to give yew $20,000, minus 14%, how much would you take off?”

The secretary thought a moment, and then replied, “Everything but my earrings.”

Louisiana

A senior citizen in Louisiana was overheard saying…”When the end of the world comes, I hope to be in Louisiana.”

When asked why, he replied, “I’d rather be in Louisiana ‘cause everything happens in Louisiana 20 years later than in the rest of the world.”

Mississippi

The young man from Mississippi came running into the store and said to his buddy, “Bubba, somebody just stole your pickup truck from the parking lot!”

Bubba replied, “Did y’all see who it was?’

The young man answered, “I couldn’t tell, but I got the license number.”

North Carolina

A man in North Carolina had a flat tire, pulled off on the side of the road, and proceeded to put a bouquet of flowers in front of the car and one behind it.  Then he got back in the car to wait.  A passerby studied the scene as he drove by, and was so curious he turned around and went back.  He asked the fellow what the problem was.

The man replied, “I got a flat tahr.”

The passerby asked, “But what’s with the flowers?”

The man responded, “When you break down they tell you to put flares in the front and flares in the back.  I never did understand it neither.”

Tennessee

A Tennessee State trooper pulled over a pickup on I-65.  The trooper asked, “Got any ID?”

The driver replied, “Bout what?”

Texas

The sheriff pulled up next to the guy unloading garbage out of his pickup into the ditch.  The sheriff asked, “Why are you dumping garbage in the ditch?  Don’t you see that sign right over your head.”

“Yep,” he replied.  “That’s why I’m dumpin’ it here, ‘cause it says: ‘Fine for Dumping Garbage.’”

I wrote you earlier during the excitement of winning the house.  Time has passed, stresses have surfaced, finances have been stretched to pay part of the up-front Federal Tax and we know that April 15th is looming.

My girls are taking care of all the details on this, thank goodness.  We feel the Lord has blessed us in winning this and that things are going to turn out well.

Here it is!  Connie, my daughter, is having Open House from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 2.  If you would like to see the house, feel free to take a peek.  We are having good response to showings and hopefully will have a contract soon.

Pictures of furnishings were made during Parade of Homes and are not in the house at this time.  It is staged but not furnished.

We got possession of the house August 16th and it has been on the market a week.  We are praying for a quick sale.

P.S. We will be in Hobart Oct. 5-7 for the HHS 50's class reunion.  One event will be a memorial service on that Saturday morning at FBC for our friend Bobby Sunderland, class of '55.

Political Fodder

Reagan Quotes

All of the following are quotes from Ronald Reagan.

Socialism only works in two places:  Heaven where they don’t need it and hell where they already have it.

Here’s my strategy on the Cold War:  We win, they lose.

The most terrifying words in the English language are:  I’m from the government and I’m here to help.

The trouble with our liberal friends are not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.

Of the four wars in my lifetime, none came about because the U.S. was too strong.

I have wondered at times about what the Ten Commandments would have looked like if Moses had run them through the U.S. Congress.

The taxpayer:  That’s someone who works for the federal government but doesn’t have to take the civil service examination.

Government is like a baby:  An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.

The nearest thing to eternal life we will ever see on this earth is a government program.

It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession.  I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first.

Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases:  If it moves, tax it.  If it keeps moving, regulate it.  And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

Politics is not a bad profession.  If you succeed, there are many rewards; if you disgrace yourself, you can always write a book.

No arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is as formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women.

If we ever forget that we’re one nation under GOD, then we will be a nation gone under.

Executive Order

This interesting but somewhat worrisome and make one wonder what is the reason for issuing this Executive Order.

This is not some conspiracy website, but the website of U.S. Congresswoman Kay Granger from Texas.  At the end of the newsletter you can click on a hyper-link and go to the Executive Order in detail.
