From the Editor

First off, I’ll apologize to all regular readers who are also my Facebook Friends as the topic of this editorial has already been mentioned on FB.  However, I think it has enough twists and turns that the rest of you might enjoy.

We had a new “friend” show up last Saturday in our front yard--a 6 ft. long black snake that I later determined to be a “Black Rat Snake.” This particular species is one of if not the largest in Virginia.  It can grow to be 8 ft. in length.  It basically does only good--is not particularly poisonous, eats frogs, lizards, mice, rats, squirrels, and even small birds.  Yes, it can climb a tree.  However, that said, it does nothing to keep from scaring the socks off of you when you stumble upon it and the walk from the pool to the drive is where he (she) likes to “hang out” on a hot summer day.  I had my first “meeting” last Saturday prior to Karen bringing Paige over to swim.  Just to try to keep things in check, I quickly applied a generous application of “Dr. T’s Snake Away” which is no more than ground moth balls (or at least made out of the same ingredients).  Not really sure if the smell irritates them, but know that the compound irritates their underside.  Well, that first application apparently had no effect as I saw him (her) three more times on Saturday afternoon.  The last of which was as Karen left the pool and traversed the steps to the driveway.  So far when my “friend” is aware of a stranger approaching, he (she) rapidly retreats--but not quick enough to satisfy Karen.  She let out a scream that you could have heard in Oklahoma had you been outside, followed by a warning to Paige and Gianna to not come that way--which did little good as I could hear them scream, “I wanta’ see, I wanta’ see!”  No such luck for them, by then he was gone.

I need not say that growing up in Oklahoma with Rattlesnakes as I did and as Judy Stockton reminded me last night on FB.  I, in general, HATE all snakes although I do know and appreciate the fact that some are very beneficial and those we should learn to live with.  Interestingly, this is the first time in the 38 years we’ve been in Virginia that I’ve seen this species of snake.  Unfortunately, I’ve seen more Copperheads than I would like and they are quite available and unlike Rattlesnakes have no mechanism to warn you.  After finding two and killing only one Copperhead while trimming Azaleas last summer, I decided to buy a Smith and Wesson “Governor” pistol which shoots .410 shotgun shells and is considered an excellent “snake gun.”

My FB discussion consisted of many opinions on whether the snake should stay or be “Governored”--most believe that he (she) should “go away.”

Following is a “sprinkling” of the advice given me on Facebook:

From #1 Texas Cousin:  “Governor him!”

From the wife of a former Graduate School friend:  “It’s against the law to kill a Black Rat Snake in Tennessee.”

From Judy Stockton High School friend:  “Oh sissy, get a hoe handle and take it to the neighbor’s yard.  lol

From one of Carolyn’s Cousins:  “A hoe might work.”

Again, from Judy Stockton:  “Really where are you from--Oklahoma?”

From another Texas Cousin:  “Shoot it and if nobody knows, it’s just a missing snake.”

From Linda (Elix) Newson former High School friend:  I’m for the hoe, I’m from Oklahoma.”

Each solution has its pros and cons.  Ecologically, without question, the snake should stay, but he (she) needs to stay out of sight--especially from Karen and Carolyn.  The girls (Paige and her cousin Gianna) still definitely want to see him.  My cousin Gary Gray in Dumas, TX, has mentioned some of the downsides to “Governoring” any snake.  He and many of his friends out there carry a Tarus “Judge”-- a comparable gun to the “Governor.”  He and several friends have a “Deer Lease” around Lubbock, TX, with a large house that will sleep 15.  On a recent visit, one of his friends saw a Rattlesnake from the porch and proceeded to “apply” his Judge to the cause.  As a result, he “killed” a new window air conditioner that had been installed and shredded the paint on the siding of the newly painted house and missed the Rattlesnake completely.  I’d like to think I could do a much better job on my snake, but do have outdoor lighting, underground wiring, stone walls and walks in the area where the snake likes to sun.  Just my luck I might take some of these items out with the snake.

Well for the time being the snake has received a “stay” of execution.  I was heartened this morning when a fellow ammunition purchaser at Dick’s told me that Black Rat Snakes eat Copperheads.  That was encouraging--temporarily.  However, after doing a little research on the internet I was not able to substantiate that fact.  Any further information along that line of thinking would be appreciated.  So, for now, I’m working hard on trying to share my space with my new friend.

True American Treasure

This is the first broadcast of "God Bless America", sung on the radio in 1940, by the legendary Kate Smith.   This is a great story and video.

The link below will take you to a video showing the very first public singing of "GOD BLESS AMERICA". But before you watch, you should also know the story of the song.

The time was 1940. America was still in a terrible economic depression. Hitler was taking over Europe and Americans were afraid we'd have to go to war. It was a time of hardship and worry for most Americans.

This was the era just before TV, when radio shows were HUGE, and American families sat around their radios in the evenings, listening to their favorite entertainers, and no entertainer of that era was bigger than Kate Smith.

Kate was also large in size, and the popular phrase still used today is in deference to her, "Ain't over till the fat lady sings". Kate Smith might not have made it big in the age of TV, but with her voice coming over the radio, she was the biggest star of her time. Kate was also very patriotic. It hurt her to see Americans so depressed and afraid of what the next day would bring. She had hope for America, and faith in her fellow Americans. She wanted to do something to cheer them up, so she went to the famous American song-writer, Irving Berlin (who also wrote "White Christmas") and asked him to write a song that would make Americans feel good again about their country.

When she described what she was looking for, he said he had just the song for her. He went to his files and found a song that he had written, but never published, 22 years before - way back in 1917. He gave it to Kate Smith and she worked on it with her studio orchestra. She and Irving Berlin were not sure how the song would be received by the public, but both agreed they would not take any profits from God Bless America. Any profits would go to the Boy Scouts of America. Over the years, the Boy Scouts have received millions of dollars in royalties from this song.

This video starts out with Kate Smith coming into the radio studio with the orchestra and an audience. She introduces the new song for the very first time, and starts singing. After the first couple verses, with her voice in the background still singing, scenes are shown from the 1940 movie, "You're In The Army Now." At the 4:20 mark of the video you see a young actor in the movie, sitting in an office, reading a paper; it's Ronald Reagan.

Frank Sinatra considered Kate Smith the best singer of her time, and said when he and a million other guys first heard her sing "God Bless America" on the radio, they all pretended to have dust in their eyes as they wiped away a tear or two.

To this day, God Bless America stirs our patriotic feelings and pride in our country. Back in 1940, when Kate Smith went looking for a song to raise the spirits of her fellow Americans, I doubt she realized just how successful the results would be for her fellow Americans during those years of hardship and worry, and for many generations of Americans to follow. Now that you know the story of the song, I hope you will enjoy it and treasure it even more.

NOW HERE IS HOW "GOD BLESS AMERICA" SHOULD BE SUNG!

Something You Will Enjoy

Here is something I know you'll enjoy. The setting of this will sound very familiar.

It's entitled:

The Lord Is My Pace Setter

The Lord is my pace setter... I shall not rush.   He makes me stop for quiet intervals.

He provides me with images of stillness which restore my serenity.

He leads me in the way of efficiency through calmness of mind and his guidance is peace.

Even though I have a great many things to accomplish each day, I will not fret, for his presence is here.

His timelessness, his all importance will keep me in balance.

He prepares refreshment and renewal in the midst of my activity by anointing my mind with his oils of tranquility.

My cup of joyous energy overflows.

Truly harmony and effectiveness shall be the fruits of my hours for I shall walk in the Pace of my Lord and dwell in his house for ever.

A Friend

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.  His name was Kyle.  It looked like he was carrying all of his books.

I thought to myself, 'Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?  He must really be a nerd.'

I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.  As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.  They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.  His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him...He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.
My heart went out to him.  So, I jogged over to him as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.

As I handed him his glasses, I said, “Those guys are jerks.  They really should get lives.”

He looked at me and said, “Hey thanks!”  There was a big smile on his face.
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.  As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.  He said he had gone to private school before now.  I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.  We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.  He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.

I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.

He said yes.

We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.  Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.  I stopped him and said, “Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!”

He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.  When we were seniors we began to think about college.  Kyle decided on Georgetown and I was going to Duke.
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
He was going to be a doctor and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.  I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.  I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak.

Graduation day, I saw Kyle.  He looked great.  He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.  He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.  He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.  Boy, sometimes I was jealous!
Today was one of those days.  I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
So, I smacked him on the back and said, “Hey, big guy, you'll be great!”

He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled....
“Thanks,” he said.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began...

“Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends....
I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.  I am going to tell you a story.”

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the first day we met.  He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.  He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.  He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.

“Thankfully, I was saved.  My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.”

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.  I saw his Mom and Dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.  Not until that moment did I realize its depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions.  With one small gesture you can change a person's life.  For better or for worse.  God puts us all in each others lives to impact one another in some way.  Look for God in others.

You now have two choices, you can:
1) Pass this on to your friends or
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

As you can see, I took choice number 1.

'Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.'

There is no beginning or end.

Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow is a mystery.
Today is a gift.

I hope you all have a blessed day and lots of gifts ahead of you

Forgot My Glasses

Yesterday my daughter again asked why I didn’t do something useful with my time.  Talking about my “doing something useful” seemed to be her favorite topic of conversation.  She was “only thinking of me” and suggested I go down to the senior center and hang out with the guys.  I did this and when I got home last night I decided to teach her a lesson and told her that I had joined a parachute club.

She said, “Are you nuts?  You’re almost 72 years old and you’re going to start jumping out of airplanes?”  I proudly showed her that I even got a membership card.

She said to me, “Good grief, where are your glasses!  This is a membership to a Prostitute Club, not a Parachute Club.”

“I’m in trouble again, and I don’t know what to do…I signed up for five jumps a week.” I told her.  She fainted.

Life as a senior citizen is not getting any easier but sometimes it can be fun.

Food for Thought

Air Force Academy Commencement 2013

Due to operating under this Sequester the ceremonies proceeded as follows: President Obama regretfully declined the kind invitation of the Commandant of the Air Force Academy to speak to the graduates and their families on the occasion of their graduation saying he was committed to addressing the graduates at West Point.  Instead it was established that Vice President Biden was free and he would come to Colorado Springs.  And, as to the request for the usual fly-over by the US Air Force Thunderbirds that was declined again due to the Sequester.   After consultation with his chain of command the Commandant of the Air Force Academy notified the White House that due to the Sequester canceling the traditional fly-over of the Thunderbirds that he was confident that the nation didn't need the added $1 million + expense to fly Air Force 2, of any configuration or model, and the added expense of the Secret Service and their entourage required when the Vice President traveled.  So just cancel the initial request for a speaker from the White House for the commencement.  So the commencement went off as planned sans representation from the Obama Administration.

It looked like this:  The featured speaker was an Under Secretary of the Air Force, who is a decorated Viet Nam veteran.  The Secretary flew back and forth from Andrews AFB to Peterson AFB In Colorado Springs on routine training flight conducted by the Air Force thus costing the American tax payers nothing.   John tells me that there were nearly as many Air Force General Officers in attendance as there were family members.  He thinks a dozen or more 4 Star General, three or four times as many 2 and 3 Stars an untold number of 1 Star Generals, and, of course, countless Colonels and below.   Most of these officers were themselves alumni of the Air Force Academy and wanted nothing less than to present a perfect program for the graduating class.   Since the Congress and the Obama Administration could not see fit to allow for a fly-over by the Thunderbirds, a number of the senior generals took matters into their own hands.

And so, when the speeches, the hats were all thrown into the air, and all the family hugs were all made and it became time for the fly-over, a roar of engines was detected from the West of the air strip and parade grounds there at the facility and everyone was treated to a fly-over by the Confederate Air Force.

Looking up they saw all kinds of vintage aircraft from B-17s B-24s, B-25s, P-38s, P-51s and others all represented by manufactures such Corsairs, Grumman, Lockheed and Boeing who still provide parts availability for these aircraft, and flown by our heroes from prior conflicts that still see fit to stay active for services such as this.  It was a wonderful experience for all who were there.   I am sure you will join me in offering a salute to these serving officers who saw fit not to rob the 2013 graduating class of their day of celebration, and to our heroes who flew the planes for this worthy occasion and oh yes to the many private donors who pitched in and covered the expenses involved in bringing these aircraft in to Colorado Springs from various locations across the country.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WE SALUTE YOU

Below is a video of the fly-over.
