From the Editor

Back from visiting the kids and grandkids in Georgia to face tall grass, the onslaught of weeds, and the things I want to do, but can’t because I have other pressing issues.  Is this all part of retirement?  Just think if I was trying to do these things and work.  Don’t even want to think about it.

Ok, sorry, I have to go there.  Are you kidding me?  What in the world is going on with this President and his administration--Benghazi, IRS, AP reporters’ phone taps?  It looks more like a bad episode of the “Keystone Cops” than the running of an efficient government.  Don’t even get me started on Jay Carney.  He’s just a “bad joke” with an appointed place to perform.  He can create more “spin” than “a room full of tops.”  If this President is as uninformed as he and Jay claim him to be, shame on them!  I don’t think they have a clue that the “wheels are coming off their bus.”  They’ve gone and done it--NOW even the liberal news media and their fellow Democrats are after them.

I find it quite amusing that the President believes if he shows anger at issues he’s “going down the tubes” on--Benghazi, that people will believe that there’s nothing to learn about how poorly they handled the situation.  That approach will fool fewer people each time it is implemented.  In fact the only people that it is currently fooling are those in the “Jimmy Kimmel piece” you’ll view later.

The President’s poor performance has essentially brought his plans for immigration and gun control to a screeching halt because people are finally starting to realize that if they can’t trust the administration on the three scandals facing them, what can they trust them on?  Above all of the fray, we still have “Obamacare” with no realistic solutions being offered.  Indeed a true fourth disaster waiting to happen.

I’m sorry but as all unravels for us, the citizens, it most certainly appears that all the President really wanted in his second term was to continue his extravagant travel and vacation itinerary.  At least that’s working well for him and Michelle.  Oh yes, that would be working well--AT OUR EXPENSE!

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Cooperton Valley Picture Trail

The “Cooperton Valley” Picture Trail site has been renewed for all to enjoy.  Thanks to Karen (Johnson) Mason for funding this site for the coming year.  This site has many pictures from past Cooperton School reunions.  We hope that you will find these photos interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past (or if you have and wondered where it went).  Go to http://www.picturetrail.com/coopertonvalley to visit the site.

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink.  Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.

Polish Sausage

What Aisle is the Polish Sausage in?

Everyone seems to be in such a hurry to scream ‘prejudice’ these days….

A customer asked, “In what aisle can I find the Polish sausage?”

The clerk asks, “Are you Polish?”

The guy, clearly offended, says, “Yes I am.  But let me ask you something.  If I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian?  Or if I had asked for German Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German?  Or if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish?  Or if I had asked for a Taco, would you ask if I was Mexican?  Or if I asked for some Irish whiskey, would you ask if I was Irish?”

The clerk says, “No, I probably wouldn’t.”

The guys say, “Well then, because I asked for Polish sausage, why did you ask if I’m Polish?”

The clerk replied, “Because you’re in Home Depot.”

This was received tonight from Kathy McDowell's father.  He was thinking this would be the last report, but it sounds like more will follow.  He is really doing well it appears, thanks for prayers and he ask they continue and feel free to have on your prayer list.  The prayers are taking care of this better than the medical community obviously.  Geary McDowell

They still are not sure what is growing on my face (besides the part of my beard they didn’t burn off with their radiation treatments – lol).  The PET scan showed  the knot by my ear at an even brighter level this time than it was last time, which should indicate cancer.  The thing they are not sure about is whether it actually is or not.  The MRI from a few weeks ago is vague in showing what the cells should look like if they are cancer.  Yet, they have enough similarity that they can’t be discounted.  The fact that radiation and chemo didn’t touch it makes it almost a phenomenon.  Thankfully there are no other places showing up, which is good.   This stuff has not spread.  Anyway, they decided the only way to deal with it is to go in and SEE what it is.  They are going to do something like a deep “skin flap” by my ear down the side of my face and go in and look at it.  If it is something they can extract they will do that.  If not, they will get a good biopsy sample and go from there.  The surgery is going to be done with something just a little stronger than a local, which probably won’t bother my heart, and they aren’t going to do a full facial cut which would go around behind my ear and down my neck a ways.  The surgery is scheduled for June 7th if I can get over this pneumonia.  It just hangs on and on.

That is my whole story for this present time.  I don’t know any more than I did, but maybe I’ll know more eventually.  Aside from the pneumonia I feel okay and the place in question is not sore or hurting physically.  The radiation and chemo may have taken a little of the wind out of my sails since my energy level seems to be down just a bit, but nothing serious.

Thanks for your prayers.  That is the one thing I don’t think the doctors have taken into consideration.  Keep them going up if you will and I’ll keep you posted when I know something.

Love you all,

Phil

Yo!  Mike!  And others.

I have enjoyed reading some of the Hobart stories over this past year.  I am NOT that old, but remember many of the businesses y'all have talked about and some of the people.  Reminds me of when my parents use to take me with them to Hobart on a Saturday night and watch the traffic.  Dad would get a bag of hamburgers from a hamburger joint I think around the NW intersection of the Courthouse block (across the street on the NE corner of the intersection) or somewhere like that.  Mom used to like to go to Hobart to shop.  We shopped a lot at a clothing store on the west side of the main street on the west side of the courthouse, occasionally at an appliance store on the east side??? and of course the automotive store around the corner from the clothing store and United grocery.  When we moved from Roosevelt in 1965 to the big city of Snyder, the shopping moved to Lawton.  There has been lots of history shared in the stories.  Thanks for sharing.

Hey Mike;

I have seen the "Old People Calling Police" item several times over the past two years, but always enjoy it.  Maybe because I know it or something similar works.  We live in one of highest identified gang cities in the U.S. according to the FBI based on per capita and thanks to having a major Army post here.  That also explains all the murders this year.  We use to have maybe three or four a year, almost all bar related.  Now we are at 8 by the end of April, and everyone has been drug and gang related.  But the famous David Lee Kemp did turn him self in a couple of weeks ago after being on the run for 14 years after escaping.

Now, about 18 years ago, and we lived in a nice neighborhood, but none is safe in Lawton anymore.  I was up late working on state and federal paperwork as I often did during the school year.  A large rock broke through a front window, normally the baby's room, but that night I was working on a computer in that room so she was sleeping in another.  I yelled at my wife to call the police and tell them what happened and that I had gone out the front door with a rifle to get whoever had done it.  Now, police response time in Lawton is very, very seldom under 30 minutes, from any of the 14-16 officers on duty per shift, unless one of their own is shot (which did happen recently).  Within three or four minutes we had a marked unit from the west, an unmarked from the north, and one more unmarked unit from the east, pulling up flying down the street.  At that time the city not only denied it had a SWAT team, but also denied they had unmarked units.  Yes, this city is full of lies in city government, second only to the school district.  I asked the uniform officer why for once they responded so quickly.  He commented because the caller said her husband went out the front door with a rifle to shoot the people who broke the window.  He asked if I had and I said yes and there is the rifle leaning on the porch by the door.  I was laughing and he asked my why I was laughing.  I told him the car took off as I stepped out the front door, but stopped one house over, at the stop sign at the intersection, signaled for a left turn, then sped off again.  I would have no problem shooting someone for what they did, but I was laughing too hard to do so.  The 303 would have made a nice hole if I had shot.  So, yes, there are effective ways to get quick responses even on the first call.  :)

The Sequester

The following clip is from “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and is a riot.  If you are alive it will make you laugh.  I’ll apologize up front if the ending offends you.  Yes, this was staged and the clip edited to include only the most outlandish answers.  However, that said, I think the answers are a good indication of just how “engaged” so many of our citizens are with what’s going on in the world.  I do encourage you to just “lighten up” and enjoy.
