From the Editor

It’s supposed to be wet today (written on Tuesday) and tomorrow--maybe even a little bit stormy tomorrow.  Yesterday was supposed to be dry until early evening, but had drizzle to light showers all day.  We have an appointment in Winchester tomorrow for the RV and I suspect we’ll take it over in the rain.  We may end up having to drive the CRV over as I do not plan to hitch it up in the rain.  Hopefully we’ll have a break this afternoon so I can hook it up.  Grass is really starting to look good, but the Azaleas are still pretty much a “no show.”

The news cycle last week went from the President’s jokes at the White House Correspondents Dinner, to whistleblowers wanting to “spill their guts” on wrong doings and cover ups with the handling of the Benghazi attack (something that interestingly the President knows nothing about), hmmm, to continued “chatter” on gun control, to the President trying to decide if Syria has really crossed his “red line” by deploying chemical weapons on their citizens -- ending with the arrest of 3 more Boston bombing conspirators who attempted to get rid of evidence to protect the two bombers.  It looks like the President’s plate is relatively full.  I’m sure that some may agree with his comment in last week’s “presser” suggesting that maybe he should just “pack up” and go home.  Don’t get excited, that was just a joke.  Oh, almost forgot that “Obamgoacare” is really starting to light a fire under a few--so bad that those in Washington have decided that they should be exempt.  It’s lucky for them that they have an option that we don’t.

Well this week intensifies with the Benghazi hearings on Wednesday (which didn’t even make the National News on NBC Tuesday night) and the Syria Israeli situation continuing to heat up.  These hearing could be big for the Democrats and the administration and I don’t mean “Good Big.”  The outcome, should they show that there was indeed a cover-up and the order was given from “above” to take no action to protect the ambassador and those in the consulate could most importantly be devastating for Hillary and her purported “run” for the Presidency in 2016.  I have to admit that if it is proved that she was eminently involved in mishandled this event (which personally I think she was) that may be the only “stumbling block” keeping her from being our next President.  I’m confident that short of something like this happening that everyone who voted for Obama in 2012 will vote for her 2016--and quite a few more will who didn’t vote for Obama in 2012.  Again, the Republican options are thin--but probably stronger than they were this year.  Will a bad outcome significantly hurt the President--probably not.  He is a true “Teflon Don.”

I mentioned Syria earlier and “sit on the fence” along with the President on what he will do.  I do think that eventually we will arm the opposition and I really don’t know if that is right or wrong.  Stay tuned and be prepared for what’s next.  Nothing will surprise me at this point!

Editor’s Note:  This week’s edition is going out a day early as we are going to Georgia to visit our Kevin, Brenda, Raegan, and Parker.  It will be a great weekend with the grandkids.

Bill Hancock Query

Here is this week’s query about Hobart history from Bill Hancock.  Thanks for listening.  We realize many won’t have any information, but, well, others will!

This Week’s Query: Tell us your memories of Mama’s Food Store at the southeast corner of Cherry and Randlett.  Who operated it?  When did the store open?  When did it close?  What did you buy there? We want to know everything you know!

What we’ve learned….

Our query last time about the little store south of Frances Willard didn’t draw many responses.  Of course, it closed probably 70 years ago!  But we did learn….

….that the store was operated by Mrs. Medley, wife of Todd Medley and mother of great HHS athlete Gene Medley.  Unfortunately, we don’t know her first name.  “Wasn’t much of a grocery store,” a friend said.  “Mostly it sold candy to grade school kids.”

One person remembered that the store may have been run later by Val Dene Medlin’s family.

One friend asked if the Kouri family operated it.  “Gene was in my class.  Nice guy and went to the Presbyterian Church with us.”

Several of you mentioned Mama’s Food Store just up the street on Randlett.

Miscellaneous

Kelly Mahone remembered the café between Toma’s and Caudill’s:  “Used to eat there when I was working on the trash truck with Herman Stanton’s father in the summer of ’68.”

Gloria Fiorella’s father, Mr. Goble (good grief, I’ve forgotten his first name!) owned the building south of Boothe Drug—the one with the “Anheuser-Busch” notation at the top.  Wish I knew what Anheuser-Busch actually did there.

Anyway, Gloria told us, “the two back doors opened so horses I guess, could back up and unload the beer (from the alley.)  Also, my mother’s aunt and her husband, Cliff and Irene Williams, operated a restaurant in the building in the 1930s.  It had a dumb waiter for parties (on the second floor.)  When we stripped the walls to put in Ladd’s Men’s Wear, there was a bullet hole in the wall.”

Thoughts from the Squirrel Lair

Mother’s Day

I don’t know where to begin.  Maybe just saying “MOTHER” is all I need to say as we greet another Mother’s Day.  There’s no way to express the love of a Mother, Grandmother, or Great Grandmother, but it is easily experienced by all of us--on a daily basis as long as we still have that special person with us.  Then after They’re gone--THEY’RE STILL WITH US!  Watch the following with Kleenex in hand.  You’ll need them.  If you haven’t told your Mother that you love her today--DO IT NOW!  Enjoy.  This is well done.

Typewriter Art

Just a Typewriter

He lived at Rose Haven Nursing Home (Roseburg, OR) for years.

Paul Smith, the man with extra ordinary talent was born on September 21, 1921, with severe cerebral palsy.

Not only had Paul beaten the odds of a life with spastic cerebral palsy, a disability that impeded his speech and mobility but also taught him to become a master artist as well as a terrific chess player even after being devoid of a formal education as a child.

"When typing, Paul used his left hand to steady his right one.  Since he couldn't press two keys at the same time, he almost always locked the shift key down and made his pictures using the symbols at the top of the number keys.

In other words, his pictures were based on these characters ..... @ # $ % ^ & * ( )_ .  Across seven decades, Paul created hundreds of pictures.

He often gave the originals away.  Sometimes, but not always, he kept or received a copy for his own records.

As his mastery of the typewriter grew, he developed techniques to create
shadings, colors, and textures that made his work resemble pencil or charcoal drawings."

This great man passed away on June 25, 2009, but left behind a collection of his amazing artwork that will be an inspiration for many.

You know that saying about "When life closes a door, God opens a window?"

Well, I think God just helped this man build a whole new house.

The following links give information on Paul Smith and have pictures of his art.  Amazing!  Enjoy!!

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

HOW TO CALL THE POLICE WHEN YOU'RE OLD, AND DON'T MOVE FAST ANYMORE

George Phillips , an elderly man from Walled Lake, Michigan, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window.  George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.

He phoned the police, who asked, "Is someone in your house?"

He said "No," but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me.

Then the police dispatcher said, "All patrols are busy.  You should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available."

George said, "Okay."  He hung up the phone and counted to 30.  Then he phoned the police again.

"Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed.  Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I just shot and killed them both; the dogs are eating them right now," and he hung up.

Within five minutes, six police cars, a SWAT Team, a helicopter, two fire trucks, a paramedic and an ambulance showed up at the Phillips' residence and caught the burglars red-handed.

One of the policemen said to George, "I thought you said that you'd shot them!"

George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"

(True Story)

I LOVE IT!

Don't mess with old people.

Regarding the Cash Back Scam, it happened to me here in Owasso, OK.  I refused to sign that I wanted cash back and asked the clerk why it showed that and she said it is to get more money.

She called a supervisor to correct it.  I rarely shop at Wal-Mart but when I do, I watch closely as they scan each item.

View on Gun Control

You really should watch this video.  It is people exactly like this that have made this country strong.  You have to admire this man’s tenacity, strength of conviction, and ability to immigrate to this country and articulate factual points......  you will be impressed!
