From the Editor

The first two days of the week here were very wet--not heavy rain by any means, but heavy drizzle both days.  Today (Wednesday) has been bright sun and a gentle breeze.  Sun following two days of drizzle certainly helps make the grass grow.  I’m sure that the fertilizer that Scott’s put down today will also help immensely.  Yes, I’ll mow grass this weekend.

I can’t believe the weeds and little oak trees that have “sprung” up since my weeding and spraying last week.  It never ceases to amaze me how long it takes roundup to kill weeds—so long that you start to wonder if it’s really going to work or not.  I’m going to have to give them a little attention before next Thursday when we plan to go to Kevin and Brenda’s in Georgia.  It’s time to see the Grandbabies again.

Brought our RV out of “mothballs” last Sunday and positioned it in the drive—probably be there the rest of the summer.  It was raining when we went after it and I have so much to get done prior to taking it to Winchester next Wednesday for some maintenance that will involve ordering and receiving some parts prior to bringing it back home.  I have so much to do that I felt it necessary to wash it in the rain.  No fun, but it sure does look better.  We get so many black streaks down the sides over the winter.  We found some neat cleaner (called “Awesome”) at the “Dollar Store” that is “death” on those streaks.  Recommend it highly.  Managed to get it de-winterized today and get highly chlorinated water in the holding tank and lines to sanitize the system.  I’ll drain that our tomorrow and flush the system a couple of times with clear water prior to using.  I need my bathroom prior to heading to Winchester next week.  Have an appointment tomorrow morning at Ford to have the A/C checked to see if it isn’t a little low on Freon and have an inside dual looked at that has a very slow leak in it.  All I’ll have left after this is to get the hitch on the front of the CRV and on the back of the RV—so we can tow the CRV over and have it to drive back.  We’ll definitely have to leave RV for a few days.

Had a chance to go do a little shooting yesterday morning and have stood in line to purchase more “speedos” 3 days this week.  Had a guy in line at Dick’s this morning tell me about an indoor range about 20 miles away that has a great yearly fee for the older generation (62+) --a “family plan” for $160 per year for unlimited time at the range with no further charge and the ability to shoot your own “speedo’s.”  The range we’ve been going to—an outdoor range—requires that you purchase your “speedos” from them—at about twice the market price.  Yeah, we joined up with the indoor guys.  Looks like a good deal to me.  We’re really looking forward to trying it out.  Oh yes, we’ll probably go to Dick’s again in the morning to look for more speedos in “waist size 22.”

Thoughts from the Squirrel Lair

Seniors

You’ll love this one even if you’re not a senior.

Yes, this is us!!

Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary.  We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others.

However, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took

The melody out of music,

The pride out of appearance,

The courtesy out of driving,

The romance out of love,

The commitment out of marriage,

The responsibility out of parenthood,

The togetherness out of the family,

The learning out of education,

The service out of patriotism,

The Golden Rule from rulers,

The nativity scene out of cities,

The civility out of behavior,

The refinement out of language,

The dedication out of employment,

The prudence out spending,

The ambition out of achievement or

God out of government and school.

And we are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance from personal relationships and interactions with others!

And we do understand the meaning of patriotism and remember those who have fought and died for our country.

Just look at the seniors with tears in their eyes and pride in their hearts as they stand at attention with their hand over their hearts!

Yes, I’m a Senior Citizen!

I’m the life of the party…even if it lasts until 8 p.m.

I’m very good at opening childproof caps…with a hammer.

I’m awake many hours before my body allows me to get up.

I’m smiling all the time because I can’t hear a thing you’re saying.

I’m sure everything I can’t find is in a safe secure place, somewhere.

I’m wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that’s just my left leg.

I’m beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps.

Yes, I’m a Senior Citizen, and I think I am having the time of my life!

Now if I could only remember who sent this to me, I wouldn’t send it back.

Spread the laughter

Share the cheer

Let’s be happy

While we’re here.

And may God bless American and may America thank God!!

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Cooperton Valley Picture Trail

The “Cooperton Valley” Picture Trail site has been renewed for all to enjoy.  Thanks to Karen (Johnson) Mason for funding this site for the coming year.  This site has many pictures from past Cooperton School reunions.  We hope that you will find these photos interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past (or if you have and wondered where it went).  Go to http://www.picturetrail.com/coopertonvalley to visit the site.

Old People

You ever been guilty of looking at others your own age and thinking, surely I can’t look that old?  Well…you’ll love this one!

My name is Alice Smith and I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist.  I noticed his DDS diploma, which bore his full name.  Suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark haired boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 30-odd years ago.

Could he be the same guy that I had a secret crush on way back then?

Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought.  This balding, gray haired man with the deeply lined face was way too old to have been my classmate.  After he examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended Morgan Park High School.

“Yes, yes I did.  I’m a Mustang!” he gleamed with pride.

“When did you graduate?” I asked.

He answered, “In 1977.  Why do you ask?”

“You were in my class!”  I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely.  Then that ugly, old, bald, wrinkled, fat, gray haired, decrepit man asked …

“What did you teach?”

Food for Thought

Walmart Cash Back Scams

We received the following in several emails.  Please be sure to click on the link below for information on the validity of these claims.  Pay particular attention to the ending where you are advised to always review your receipt before leaving the cashier.  Regardless of how true the scam is, the advice is good.

Pay Attention to Your Receipts

This could happen anywhere.  It happened at Wal-Mart (Supercenter Store #1279), 10411 N. Freeway 45, Houston, TX 77037 a month ago.

I bought a bunch of stuff, over $150, and I glanced at my receipt as the cashier was handing me the bags.  I saw a cash-back of $40.  I told her I didn’t request a cash back and to delete it.

She said I’d have to take the $40 because she couldn’t delete it.  I told her to call a supervisor.  The supervisor came and said I’d have to take it!  I said NO!  Taking the $40 would be a cash advance against my Discover and I wasn’t paying interest on a cash advance!!!  If they couldn’t delete it, then they would have to delete the whole order.

So the supervisor had the cashier delete the whole order and re-scan everything!

The second time I looked at the electronic pad before I signed and a cash-back of $20 popped up.  At that point I told the cashier and she deleted it.  The total came out right.  The cashier agreed that the electronic pad must be defective.  (yeah, right!)

Obviously the cashier knew the electronic pad wasn’t defective because she NEVER offered me the $40 in the beginning.

Can you image how many people went through before me and at the end of her shift how much money she pocketed?

Just to alert everyone.  My coworker went to Milford, DE, Wal-Mart last week.  She had her items run up by the cashier.  The cashier hurried her along and didn’t give her a receipt.

She asked the cashier for a receipt and the cashier was annoyed and gave it to.  My coworker didn’t look at the receipt until later that night.  The receipt showed that she asked for $20 cash back.  She did not ask for cash back!

My coworker called Wal-Mart who investigated but could not see the cashier pocket the money.  She then called her niece who works for the bank and her niece told her this is a new scam.  The cashier will key in that you asked for cash back and then hand it to her friend who is the next person in line.

Please, please, please check your receipts right away when using credit or debit cards!

This is NOT limited to Wal-Mart, although they are the largest retailer so they have the most incidents.  Always check your receipt before leaving the cash register.

http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_walmart_cash_back.htm

Regardless of truthfulness of these emails, it is always best to review your receipt before leaving a cash register.  In fact, I suggest that you try to observe as each item is scanned to insure that the price you thought the item was in fact was what came up when scanned.  Too many times I have found that the “sale price” that is on the shelf for an item is not what rings up when scanned.  A merchant must honor the price displayed for an item regardless of what comes up in the computer when scanned.  Also, it is important to be sure that the number of items scanned is the number you purchased.  If you purchased 5 but one is scanned twice, you are paying for an extra one.  In the economic times we are living in, one can’t be too careful.  cmn
