From the Editor

Good morning from Marshall, TX.  Yes, we’re safely within the borders of Texas!  The “road trip” has begun.  Well, it in fact it began last Thursday as we “motored” our way to Marietta, GA, to celebrate Parker May’s 1st Birthday last Sunday.  Yes, it was a grand event for Parker, but a little frustrating for “big sister” who couldn’t understand why “most” of the presents were for Parker.  Yes Nana was smart enough to bring a couple items for Raegan to ease her pain.  Even though she had minimal success, PaPa suggested that she order Raegan a “pink dump truck” that she can play with while Parker plays with the two we gave him for his Birthday.  Hopefully that will help.

We always are a little uneasy as we leave home headed to “anywhere” hoping that all holds together while we’re gone--especially our van pool operation that must continue to function whether we’re there or not.. Over time, with the help of some very competent service advisors and mechanics at Cowles Ford and a good cadre of drivers things always, one way or the other, seem to hold together.  Yes, we’ve had minimal issues, but have always (up to now) been able to fix all issues remotely.  Beyond that, there are always issues with our home and property to worry about.  Again, fortunately, we’ve always had very competent neighbors to watch over things there.  One thing we always do unless water will be needed for watering or pool use by Karen, Mark and their friends in the summer time is turn it off just to eliminate the possibility of a leak within the house.  We did that this time, but still had a “chinks in our armor.”  First of all, we knew that our “house boy” was going to be gone for a couple of days--no problem--not exactly.  His ‘couple of days” turned into four as he and his wife got “snowed in” in West Virginia.  We got a call from Karen yesterday around noon to say that Mark had stopped by and the house was “freezing” down stairs--the heat pump that services the first floor and basement was out.  After a call to our HVAC service group, whom we have a service contract with on both units, (and Karen’s assistance) a little over two hours later it was back up and running.  Carolyn says that she cringes every time she sends in that payment, but the events of yesterday will most likely make that payment much easier to make in the future.

This morning we start our “trek across Texas” to visit with many of our Texas cousins (Carolyn’s and mine alike).  I can see a lot of BS going down and quite a bit of good food too.  Tomorrow a large contingent of the “Gray family” will gather and my cousin Gary Gray will put on one of his famous “fish fries.”   He and Carla joined us 2 years ago at Atlanta Motor Speedway and did the same for our family and several of our Georgia friends that we meet there yearly.  Just let me say that Gary was a hit and his fish fry a rousing success!

We’ll spend a couple of nights with her cousin Beverly and her husband Joe in  Caddo Mills, TX, before moving on to Denton, TX, to have lunch with one of her college roommates who was in our wedding that we have only seen once since the night we got married over 42 years ago.  From there we move on to Oklahoma for her High School Reunion and a week of visiting with her Brother’s family, meeting our newest family member (Dakota Sky Thurmond), and several other friends.  From there we travel on up north to Medicine Lodge, KS, to spend a couple of days with Tom Carr and his wife Jo.  Tom and I were in Grad School together at Oklahoma State.  From there the four of us will move on to Manhattan, KS, to spend a couple of days with Michael and Earline Dikeman.  I got my PhD under Michael in 1975, and he retired in January.  Neither, Tom or I were able to attend his retirement party, so we’re going to celebrate with him “up close and personal.”  No we’re not done yet.  We’ll all four go back into Northwest Oklahoma to spend a couple of days with longtime friends Fred and Peggy Williams.  At this point we are expecting some excellent pointers on the “fine art” of pistol marksmanship.  Then, it’s back to the real world and the trip back to Virginia and all the things that need to be done that didn’t get done while we were gone.  Geez, I’m tired already.

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Cooperton Valley Picture Trail

The “Cooperton Valley” Picture Trail site has been renewed for all to enjoy.  Thanks to Karen (Johnson) Mason for funding this site for the coming year.  This site has many pictures from past Cooperton School reunions.  We hope that you will find these photos interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past (or if you have and wondered where it went).  Go to http://www.picturetrail.com/coopertonvalley to visit the site.

Interesting Tidbits

The Juggler

This is an old video with President Reagan in the front row.  He is sitting along side Speaker of the House Tip O'Neil enjoying an evening together at the Ford Theatre.  A very funny act takes place on stage.  With all of today's security around any of our Presidents, nothing the performer does here could ever take place now.

Being Poor…

Annie, 6 years old, gets home from school.  She had her first family planning lesson at school.

Her mother, very interested, asks, “How did it go?”

“I died of shame!” she answered!

“Sissy from over the road says that the stork brings babies.  Sally next door said you can buy babies at the orphanage.  Pete in my class says you can buy babies at the hospital.”

Her mother answers laughingly, “But that’s no reason to be ashamed!”

“No, but I can’t tell them that we were so poor that daddy and you had to make me yourselves.”

Food for Thought

Let This Message Soak In

This is too true to be funny!  The next time you hear a politician use the word ‘billion’ in a casual manner, think about whether you want the ‘politicians’ spending YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend.  But one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.

A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.

A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let’s take a look at New Orleans.  It’s amazing what you can learn with some simple division.

Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu (D) was asking congress for 250 BILLION DOLLARS to rebuild New Orleans.  Interesting number…What does it mean?

Well, if you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, and child), you each get $516,528.

Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans, your home gets $1,329,787.

Or, if you are a family of four, your family gets $2,066,012.

Washington, D.C.  HELLO!!  Are all your calculators broken?

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago…and our nation was the most prosperous in the world…and mom stayed home to raise kids.

What happened?  Can you spell ‘politicians!!’

And I still have to Press ‘1’ for English!!  What has happened to our country?
