From the Editor

Happy Wednesday morning to you from snowy Northern Virginia.  Nobody knows for sure what we’re in for, but I’m sure it will be the heaviest snow we’ve seen all year.  All school systems and the Federal Government are closed for the day.  Good call.  It’s currently 34 degrees with fairly heavy snow.  Snow started around 11:00 pm last night.  I think we could easily get 8 inches or more.  It is extremely wet and heavy.  It should all be ok except for the real threat of power outages.  That’s what all these beautiful trees do for us.  Whatever, the tractor is sitting directly in front of the snow blower and the power chord for the generator is already connected to the house waiting outside the rear garage door to be attached to the generator (waiting inside) should it need to be rolled out and put into service.  Well, that’s enough on the weather.

All the discussions on TV this week have centered around the sequester.  Yes it’s in because the Republicans finally pushed back after giving the President his tax hikes in January in anticipation of future spending cuts--which were not offered up by the President and WILL NOT happen if he has his way.  So, yes he blames the Republicans--which is his plan and what he wants to continue to do.  They (the Republicans) gave earlier and he didn’t and hasn’t given at all.  He is using the sequester to scare the public into believing that everything is getting ready to fall apart as a result.  This is of course mostly “hype.”  It’s so interesting that he is willing to hurt citizens to further his personal agenda.  Admittedly, as I mentioned last week, the sequester is like a “snowflake in a snow storm” and cannot create the broad devastation that he purports.  However, that said, there are many civilian employees (based on poor targeting of the sequester) that will be receiving 20 percent pay cuts as a result.  This is significant to those employees as I know so well since our daughter, as a civilian DoD employee, will be furloughed one day a week as a result.  You probably haven’t heard much about this part of the sequester.  I’m not sure if it’s because they feel these employees are irrelevant or the ‘rank and file” just aren’t aware that there are “real people” affected--and not the services suggested by the President.

None of us are naive enough to believe that there aren’t useless programs that could be cut that would save the “hurt” being experienced by many.  Oh, yes “Obama phones” are still on with 41 percent of those receiving them said to not qualify.  I’m sure you’ve heard that the President has suspended all White House tours as a result of the sequester.  What you probably haven’t heard is that all those leading White House tours are volunteers!  Just a little more of the BS being spun.

I’m sure that none of this action on the part of the Administration is even being noticed by those who voted for the President that are recipients of his “free stuff.”  No need to notice, the “free stuff” is still flowing freely.  I would only hope that those of you “working Democrats” who voted for the President are starting to ask yourself if things are going the way you had hoped they would be when you placed your vote in November.  The Presidency is no place to exercise personal agendas.  The Presidency should serve the good of the country--not the good of the President.

Thoughts from the Squirrel Lair

Nominated for Best Email of the Year

After being interviewed by the school administration, the prospective teacher said:

Let me see if I’ve got this right.

You want me to go into that room with all those kids, correct their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse, monitor their dress habits, censor their T-shirt messages, and instill in them a love for learning.

You want me to check their backpacks for weapons, wage war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, and raise their sense of self esteem and personal pride.

You want me to teach them patriotism and good citizenship, sportsmanship and fair play, and how to register to vote, balance a checkbook, and apply for a job.

You want me to check their heads for lice, recognize signs of antisocial behavior, and make sure that they all pass the final exams.

You also want me to provide them with an equal education regardless of their handicaps, and communicate regularly with their parents in English, Spanish or any other language, by letter, telephone, newsletter, and report card.

You want me to do all this with a piece of chalk, a blackboard, a bulletin board, a few books, a big smile, and a starting salary that qualifies me for food stamps.

You want me to do all this, and then you tell me

I Can’t Pray?

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Cooperton Valley Picture Trail

The “Cooperton Valley” Picture Trail site has been renewed for all to enjoy.  Thanks to Karen (Johnson) Mason for funding this site for the coming year.  This site has many pictures from past Cooperton School reunions.  We hope that you will find these photos interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past (or if you have and wondered where it went).  Go to http://www.picturetrail.com/coopertonvalley to visit the site.

Difference in http:// and https://

DID YOU KNOW!

Once in a while, there is something that comes down the pike that is of real importance.

What is the difference between http and https?  Don't know how many of you are aware of this difference, but it is worth sending to any who do not.

The main difference between http:// and https:// is it's all about keeping you secure.  HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol.  The S (big surprise) stands for "Secure."

If you visit a website or web page, and look at the address in the web

browser, it will likely begin with the following: http://.  This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular "unsecured" language.  In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.  This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an http website!

But if the web address begins with https://, that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on.

If a website ever asks you to enter your credit Card information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https://.  If it doesn't, you should NEVER enter sensitive information.......such as a credit card number, SS#, etc.

Lakes in Southwest Oklahoma at Dangerously Low Levels

The lakes in southwest Oklahoma are so low that mandatory water restrictions are being implemented in many of the cities and towns.  Tom Steed Reservoir which is the primary water supply for Snyder, Altus, and Frederick is at about 35% capacity.  Lake Lugert is at a very dangerously low capacity of 16.45%.  Lake Lugert is used primarily to provide water to many irrigation farmers.  No water was released for irrigation in 2012 due to the low capacity.  That was the first time in 66 years that water was not available to irrigation farmers.  Unless there is a major change in the capacity, water will probably not be available to farmers this year either.

Of course, farm ponds and creeks are virtually all dry as well.  The area needs substantial rainfall to fill the ponds and creeks and to provide runoff for the raising the water level in the lakes.   The area has had some rain which is beneficial to the crops but none to help the water levels.

We continue to pray for rain to help these low water levels.

Military Simulations in Roosevelt

American Milsim, a military-simulated and action-packed event that uses special effects and pyrotechnics for a one-of-a-kind military simulation experience, came to Roosevelt last week-end.  Players dressed in military gear from across the nation divided into two teams and waged battles.  The weapons used by the players were Airsoft guns which are replicas of steel guns and utilize bullets slightly larger than BBs that can travel up to 400 feet.  The event was held on land provided by Parts World.  A viewing area for spectators was set up where they could view the action while be protected from potential injuries.  American Milsim is headquartered in Broken Arrow, OK.

Special effects provided by Hellfire Special Effects of Dallas contributed to the simulations.  The special effects are used to enhance the intense battles to create lifelike elements.  They used everything from fireballs to concussion explosives and props, such as explosive doors and mines, and rockets through the air.

American Milsim is becoming one of the nation’s leading military simulation firms.  They hope to make an event in Roosevelt an annual event.

Humor

Guy Humor

An avid outdoorsman and 4x4 enthusiast, Matt decided to tie the knot with his longtime girlfriend.

One evening, not long after the honeymoon, he was getting his gear ready for an upcoming hunting trip. His wife was standing there at the bench watching him. After a long period of silence she finally speaks.

"Honey, I've been thinking, now that we are married I think it's time you quit hunting, shooting, hand-loading, four wheeling and fishing. Maybe you should sell your guns, boat and that old Land Cruiser."

Tim gets this horrified look on his face.

She says, "Darling, what's wrong?"

"You were beginning to sound like my ex-wife."

"Ex-wife!" she screams, "I didn't know you were married before!"

He replied, "I wasn’t."

From the Email “Bag”

March 1, 2013

Michael, you and Carolyn do a great job providing news and humor to all of us.  Thanks for all your efforts.  The Fishing in Indiana story is really amazing.  I shared it with family and friends living in Indiana.

I printed the Babbs Switch Fire story.  I attended Babbs School during second and third grade.  Lewis Edens was a neighbor and I recall how he had been burned by the fire.  Many families suffered great loss at that time.  Through the years, I have saved articles published regarding the fire, but this story is the most complete one I have read.  Thanks for sharing it and thanks to Mr. Curtis for sending it.  Thankfully, school buildings were required to be safer due to the tragedy.

Bitter Pill:  Why Medical Bills Are So High

This is an interesting read.  If you have ever looked carefully at the Explanation of Benefits you receive from your insurance company explaining how much the doctor charged, how much the insurance paid, and how much you owe the doctor, you have noticed that the plan allowance and thus the amount paid the doctor who participates with the insurance is always significantly less than the amount originally charged.  It makes one wonder how those without insurance afford the charges of some of the doctors.
