I’m writing this a week
early (on 01/31/13) for next week’s paper as we plan to have cousins from Texas
with us the first of next week and are attempting to get most of the work out
of the way for next week’s paper. Well,
it appears that winter is again on its way to
Yesterday was another
milestone for the “old man”--66 years on this earth. I must admit that over the years there have
only been three birthdays that had a significant impact on me. The first, of course, was “sweet sixteen”
when I could get my driver’s license.
What a huge milestone. The next
was 35. You ask what about 21? Well, since I don’t currently and have never
been a drinker, it was most certainly not a “show stopper” for me. If I remember correctly that was the age that
I was able to get an
Moving on, I’m considering a
project that as Carolyn would say should help keep my mind and body young. I’ll reserve divulging the details of that
project for a later time. Let’s just
say, I think it may make me feel like a much younger man if I follow
through. Younger would be better. By the way, I’ll be the first to admit that
what I should be doing is exercising more and eating less. In reference to that I “turned over a new
leaf” last night by not eating anything after 6:00 pm. I read something the other day that implied
that was an excellent way to start cutting back. We’ll see if that helps. I’ll keep you posted.
Interesting as it may sound,
I think I’m starting to feel those negative thoughts of growing old pass. Wait, maybe not. I fear that was just gas.

The Model T Ford
This is a great video
showing the first assembly lines at the original Ford auto plant. Neat to
see those guys making the old wooden wheels, mostly by hand. Watch near the end
and you'll see where the model T could go . . . let's see any regular auto of
today do that.
Wonder how many of these are
still in running condition?

Thoughts from
the Squirrel Lair
The APPLES & JESUS
A few years ago a group of salesmen went to a regional sales convention in
In their rush, with tickets and briefcases, one of these salesmen inadvertently
kicked over a table which held a display of apples. Apples flew everywhere. Without stopping or looking back, they all
managed to reach the plane in time for their nearly-missed boarding... ALL BUT
ONE!!! He paused, took a deep breath,
got in touch with his feelings and experienced a twinge of compassion for the
girl whose apple stand had been overturned.
He told his buddies to go on without him, waved good-bye, told one of them to
call his wife when they arrived at their home destination and explain his
taking a later flight. Then he returned
to the terminal where the apples were all over the terminal floor.
He was glad he did.
The 16-year-old girl was totally blind!
She was softly crying, tears running down her cheeks in frustration, and
at the same time helplessly groping for her spilled produce as the crowd
swirled about her; no one stopping and no one to care for her plight.
The salesman knelt on the floor with her, gathered up the apples, put them back
on the table and helped organize her display.
As he did this, he noticed that many of them had become battered and
bruised; these he set aside in another basket.
When he had finished, he pulled out his wallet and said to the girl,
"Here, please take this $40 for the damage we did. Are you okay?"
She nodded through her tears. He
continued on with, "I hope we didn't spoil your day too badly."
As the salesman started to walk away, the bewildered blind girl called out to
him, "Mister...." He paused and turned to look back into those blind
eyes.
She continued, "Are you Jesus?"
He stopped in mid-stride ... and he wondered.
He gently went back and said, "No, I am nothing like Jesus - He is
good, kind, caring, loving, and would never have bumped into your display in
the first place."
The girl gently nodded: "I only asked because I prayed for Jesus to help
me gather the apples. He sent you to
help me, so you are like Him - only He knows who will do His will. Thank you for hearing His call, Mister."
Then slowly he made his way to catch the later flight with that question
burning and bouncing about in his soul: "Are you Jesus?"
Do people mistake you for Jesus?
That's our destiny, is it not?
To be so much like Jesus that people cannot tell the difference as we live and
interact with a world that is blind to His love, life and grace.
If we claim to know Him, we should live, walk and act as He would. Knowing Him is more than simply quoting
Scripture and going to church. It's
actually living the Word as life unfolds day to day.
You are the apple of His eye even though you, too, have been bruised by a
fall. He stopped what He was doing and
picked up you and me on a hill called

Handbook 2013
If you only act upon three
or four of these things in the New Year, so be it. I’m sure you’ll be better for it.
Health:
1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a
prince, and dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants
and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.
4. Live with the 3 E’s—Energy, Enthusiasm, and
Empathy.
5. Make time to pray.
6. Play more games.
7. Read more books that you did in 2012.
8. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each
day.
9. Sleep for 7 hours.
10. Take a 10 to 30 minute
walk daily. And while you walk, smile.
Personality:
11. Don’t compare your life
to others. You have no idea what their
journey is all about.
12. Don’t have negative
thoughts or things you cannot control.
Instead invest your energy in the positive, present moment.
13. Don’t overdo. Keep your limits.
14. Don’t take yourself so
seriously. No one else does.
15. Don’t waste your
precious energy on gossip.
16. Dream more while you are
awake.
17. Envy is a waste of
time. You already have all your need.
18. Forget issues of the
past. Don’t remind your partner with
his/her mistakes of the past. That will
ruin your present happiness.
19. Life is too short to
waste time hating anyone. Don’t hate
others.
20. Make peace with your past
so it won’t spoil the present.
21. No one is in charge of
your happiness except you.
22. Realize that life is a
school and you are here to learn.
Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away
like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
23. Smile and laugh more.
24. You don’t have to win
every argument. Agree to disagree.
Society:
25. Call your family often.
26. Each day give something
good to others.
27. Forgive everyone for
everything.
28. Spend time with people
over the age of 70 and under the age of 6.
29. Try to make at least
three people smile each day.
30. What other people think
of you is none of your business.
31. Your job won’t take care
of you when you are sick. Your friends
will. Stay in touch.
Life:
32. Do the right thing!!
33. Get rid of anything that
isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.
34. GOD heals everything.
35. However good or bad a
situation is, it will change.
36. No matter how you feel,
get up, dress up and show up.
37. The best is yet to come…
38. When you awake alive in
the morning, thank GOD for it.
39. Your inner most is
always happy. So, be happy.
Last but not the least:
40. I just sent this to
someone I care about and I hope you do to, if you just delete.

The Power of Scripture
A woman had just returned to
her home from an evening of church services, when she was startled by an
intruder. She caught the man in the act
of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled: “Stop!
Acts 2:38!” (Repent and be
baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins may be forgiven.)
The burglar stopped in his
tracks. The woman calmly called the
police and explained what she had done.
As the officer cuffed the
man to take him in, he asked the burglar:
“Why did you just stand there?
All the old lady did was yell a scripture to you.”
“Scripture?” replied the
burglar. “She said she had an ax and two
38s!”
Send this to someone who
needs a laugh today and remember:
Knowing scripture can save your life—in more ways than one!

Dear Mike:
I'm not really a

gun control issues being discussed. Have
you been to the doctor recently? When

been feeling anxious and do you own a gun. This happened to me before all
the recent push for more gun controI, so I did not expect the gun question and

Gun Fight Rules
We received two different
versions of Gun Fight Rules—one on a lighter side than the other. Enjoy both!
In a gunfight the most
important rule is…have a gun! Shooting
advice from various Concealed Carry Instructors. If you own a gun, you will appreciate these
rules. If not, you should get one and
learn how to use it and learn the rules:
A. Guns have only two enemies: rust and politicians.
B. It’s always better to be judged by 12 than
carried by 6.
C. Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not
you.
D. Never let someone or something that threatens
you get inside arm’s length.
E. Never say, “I’ve got a gun.” If you need to use deadly force, the first
sound they should hear is the safety clicking to OFF.
F. The average response time of a 911 call is 23
minutes and a police car doing 50 mph, the response time of a 9mm is 1200 feet
per second.
G. The most important rule in a gunfight
is: Always win—There is no such thing as
a fair fight. Always win—cheat if
necessary.
H. Make your attacker advance through a wall of
bullets. You may get killed with your
own gun, but he’ll have to beat you to death with it, “cause it will be empty.”
I. If you’re in a gun fight: If you’re not shooting, you should be
loading. If you’re not loading, you
should be moving. If you’re not moving,
loading, or shooting, you’re probably dead.
J. In a life and death situation, do
something. It may be wrong, but do
something!
K. If you carry a gun, people may call you
paranoid. Nonsense! If you have a gun, what do you have to be
paranoid about?
L. You can say ‘stop’ or any other word, but a
muzzle pointed at someone’s head is pretty much a universal language.
M. You cannot save the world, but you may be
able to save yourself and your family.
“Peace is that brief
glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading” – Thomas
Jefferson
The following 22 rules were
handed out by an ATF agent to participants in an informal gun training session
he was holding.
1. Bring a gun.
Preferably, bring two guns. Bring
all your friends who have guns.
2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting
twice. Ammo is cheap; your life is not.
3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow
miss.
4. If your shooting stance is correct, you’re
not moving fast enough or using cover effectively.
5. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. Lateral or diagonal movement is best.
6. If you can choose what to bring to a
gunfight, bring a long gun and a friend with a long gun.
7. In the future no one will remember details
about caliber, stance or tactics. They
will only remember who lived.
8. If you are not shooting you should be running
or reloading.
9. Use a gun that works every time.
10. Someday someone may kill
you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it
because it is empty.
11. Always cheat. The only unfair gunfight is the one you lose.
12. Have a plan. Have a backup plan because the first one
won’t work.
13. Use cover and
concealment whenever possible.
14. Speed is fine but
accuracy is final.
15. Never drop your guard.
16. Watch their hands. Hands kill.
In God we trust, everyone else keep your hands where we can see them.
17. Decide to win before the
fight begins.
18. Be aggressive ENOUGH,
quickly ENOUGH.
19. The faster you finish
the fight, the less shot you will get.
20. Be polite. Be professional. But always have a plan to kill everyone and
everything you see.
21. Be courteous to everyone
and friendly to no one.
22. Your number one option
for personal security is awareness, avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
