From the Editor

Being only two weeks out from the election, I have to jump back into some “generic” politics.  No, I’m not going to tell why you should or shouldn’t vote for either of the candidates, but give you my “spin” on the first two debates and what I think each of the campaign’s objectives were in the last (and most boring) debate.  Don’t ever think that each campaign doesn’t have a game plan for the debate--well if you don’t consider the first debate in which most pundits agreed that the President wasn’t at his best and I doubt that was planned.  There was so much said prior to the first debate that “debates don’t change anything” in a campaign.  Well, that was most certainly proved to be wrong for the first debate which most certainly put Gov. Romney back in a race that he was woefully behind in.  As much of a “game change” as the first debate appeared to be, the second one--which most all agree that President Obama won--has produced minimal if any “bump” for the President.  I agree with what most say--it “stopped the bleeding” for the President and at that point, that was critical.  So from most polls, going into the last debate, the race was a “dead heat.”

Now for debate #3, there were many hopes for both campaigns.  The right wing Republican base was looking for revenge on the missed Benghazi opportunity from the second debate.  It did come, so it wasn’t because the Governor didn’t have an opportunity--it came on the first question from the moderator, Bob Schieffer--who I think did an excellent job.  Then Gov. Romney missed it again.  No, he didn’t miss it, he PASSED on it and it wasn’t an accident--it was strategy.  It was very apparent that Gov. Romney’s handlers wanted him to be the “kinder and gentler” candidate.  With that approach, some feel that he opened himself up to looking weak.  That’s the risk one takes and apparently the Romney campaign was willing to take that risk--hoping that he would win many voters with “cool and calm” than combative demeanor.  Although, right wing Republicans were most certainly disappointed, time will tell if the Romney campaign’s approach was a winner.  Make no mistake about it what you saw was not Gov. Romney being “disconnected” as President Obama was in the first debate--but the plan.

I feel that a little needs to be said about the President’s approach.  He was not “shooting from the hip.”  That was also the strategy of his campaign.  Most of the pundits and the “Twitter Feed” that I followed during the debate suggested that his was the stance of a candidate “behind” in the race.  You can evaluate for yourself if this approach constituted more “up” than “down” with undecided voters.

We’re now in the “home stretch” with less than two weeks left until Election Day.  It’s now all about how much ground the two candidates can cover, how many TV campaign ads you can digest, and how many undecided voters can be brought into each candidate’s fold.  Remember, voting is a privilege.  It’s also a responsibility.  Be responsible and vote!

Remembering

We remember all of these.  It was great growing up in the late 40’s and the 50’s in the small town of Roosevelt, Oklahoma.—Jack Whitson, Class of 1953, Jerry Alford, Class of 1959, and Debbie (Farris) Bryant, Class of 1972.

This was beautiful.  We were probably the luckiest generation ever to have experienced life when times were good.  What memories will our children and grandchildren take into their futures?  Nothing like we had, that’s for sure.

This is a video not to be missed.  If you didn’t live it, you missed out.  I lived it, loved it and remember it well!  I’m not so sure all of our advancements are the best thing that has ever happened to us.  Be sure and watch it all the way to the end, there is a slight pause in the middle…the video will tell you when it is over.

Colors

Beautiful…Enjoy the scenes and the music.

Let go of your mouse…Just click on the link below, turn on the sound, and sit back, relax and enjoy a multitude of pictures, first in black and white, then change into color.  Phenomenal photography.  What a colorful world we live in which we take for granted every day.  Black and white is dramatic, but color…wow!

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Cooperton Valley Picture Trail

The “Cooperton Valley” Picture Trail site has been renewed for all to enjoy.  Thanks to Karen (Johnson) Mason for funding this site for the coming year.  This site has many pictures from past Cooperton School reunions.  We hope that you will find these photos interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past (or if you have and wondered where it went).  Go to http://www.picturetrail.com/coopertonvalley to visit the site.

Interesting Tidbits

Bill Hancock, former Hobart resident, regularly sends a Hobart history question to some of his friends in the area and they respond with what they remember about the question.  He has agreed to include us on his distribution list and we are going to include the question in our newsletter along with the responses that follow.  If any of you remember or know anything about the question he poses, please respond to us and we will forward to Bill for distribution to his friends.  We believe that most all of us have ties to all parts of Kiowa County, not just Roosevelt and will probably have interest in the questions and responses.

Query:  What was on the north side of Third Street across the alley from the fire station before the current city administration building was constructed?  We know Shorty Derrick had the service station on the northwest corner of Third and Jefferson, but what was between there and the alley?

The Old Irish Nun

In a convent in Ireland, the 98-year-old Mother Superior lay dying.  The nuns gathered around her bed trying to make her last journey comfortable.  They tried giving her warm milk to drink but she refused it.  One of the nuns took the glass back to the kitchen.  Then, remembering a bottle of Irish Whiskey that had been received as a gift the previous Christmas, she opened it and poured a generous amount into the warm milk.  Back at Mother Superior’s bed, they held the glass to her lips.  The frail nun drank a little, then a little more and before they knew it, she had finished the whole glass down to the last drop.  As her eyes brightened, the nuns thought it would be a good opportunity to have one last talk with their spiritual leader.  “Mother,” the nuns asked earnestly, “Please give us some of your wisdom before you leave us.”  She raised herself up in bed on one elbow, looked at them and said:  “DON’T SELL THAT COW.”

Mike, I really enjoy the Newsletter.  You and Carolyn are doing a great job.  I have switched to a Mac computer and for some reason it doesn't ask for a response to receiving your message.  Let me say, Mac's are sure different from PC's.  My family had been after me for years to get a Mac.  I got one, but my old PC is in the closet, just in case!

To bring you up to date:  The St. Jude Dream Home that my two daughters and I bought one ticket for and actually won is under contract for sale now and the closing date is October 31st.

We feel really blessed in winning it but are happy to turn it over to a family that can enjoy it.

The house was on the market just 47 days and we feel very blessed to have a buyer this soon; and really glad we won't have to carry it through the winter.

Let me just first say that my feet hurt!  However, my heart is happy and that makes me smile!

Our community may be small but we are mighty!

Last night the Roosevelt First Baptist Church held their monthly Community Meal.  We average serving over 100 meals each time and of course there is a lot of good "fellowshipping" going on along with the free food.  Everyone is welcome and we always have a great time.  The most outstanding months were the Chili Cook-Off in February and the Home-made Ice Cream Freeze-Off in August.  We plan to make those annual contests.

Today at the Roosevelt Senior Citizens Center we broke our attendance record.  We served 88 meals!  We never imagined such great turnouts.  Our cook, Cheryl Rhodes, is fantastic and our volunteers are the greatest.  The support of the Roosevelt community is outstanding.

These two activities are very dear to me.  I just wanted to extend a personal "Thank You!" to everyone who takes part.

Hi Mike/Carolyn,

I hope you keep up the email going on the newsletter and also have it on that website as a backup.  I checked that website link and if you keep it as you have it now, I can link on it and view it.  The Yahoo problem is likely a setting of some type in their individual spam accounts that is blocking it from coming into their email--if they can figure out how to modify that, that will go to their email.  For some reason their Yahoo email settings do not like something in this newsletter and is somehow blocking it from shipping.  Just a guess there.

Good news, Detroit won for their division.  Bad news, Giants are not doing great at the Cardinals stadium now and I predict unless the Giants get their act together quickly it will be Cardinals and Detroit.  It is hard to win on Cardinal territory.  Yet the Giants just got a run in so it is a 2:1 game right now.  Cards have to win the next 3 games I think so Giants have a chance.

I got a dislocated shoulder early April and back to normal pretty much though technically I will always have 2.5 tears in the shoulder area to live with.  Yet I do baseball hitting in the backyard for practice.  It helps exercise the shoulder.  I was watching how they were swinging the bat since I have no one to tutor me on swinging.  I remember Dad always liked watching baseball too.  Normally I don't watch baseball prior to the World Series.

I am off this weekend to do the TourdeTrees at Eufuala, the end of the year OBS ride.

Mike, you two have heard this a thousand times over—how great you are doing on the paper, which is true.  But, you know people don’t realize just how hard it is writing a paper when you are 2,000 miles away from Roosevelt.  I don’t know how you get any info on Roosevelt, so you can print it.  I am 14 miles away and I don’t even know what is going on down there.  A few years ago, I read some of Wanda’s news about the going on there, and here are two things I remember from one of the news articles:  first one was, “Joe Blows” dog was running down the street.  2nd was, I saw Brad come into the store and bought a pop.  So see even Wanda who was there couldn’t give exciting news about Roosevelt because there wasn’t any.

I spent an hour last week writing an email to Mike and Carolyn about those very things, Jerry.  Couldn’t make it sound right so I deleted it instead of sending it.  You said it all in a nutshell.  Thank you, Jerry.  Mike and Carolyn begged us all to send articles and info about what’s been going on in our lives since high school days.  How many of us have done that?  Not me!  I appreciate the time and effort they put into the news.  We should all commit to, at least, one interesting story about Roosevelt, or what’s going on in our lives.  Until we’ve done that, we have no right to complain.  CAN I GET AN AMEN???

I don't believe a word that woman is saying.  She may be getting $1500.00 a month in SSC however I have never known the government to hand out money for rent.  EBT yes but for one person, that is more than a family of 8 would get.  I do know there is a Medicaid program that gives the disabled and elderly a cell phone with 250 minutes.  My daughter doesn't get anywhere near that kind of money.  I have my own cell phone and so does she, but it is not a from a government source.  I pay for them.

If she is getting that kind of assistance, she really knows how to milk both federal and state programs or she knows somebody.  Disgraceful.

Mike,

Just a note to let you know that my wife (Dee) and I moved to Oklahoma City about two weeks ago.  We have been busy unpacking and throwing lot's away and saving some for the needy.  Our new address in Oklahoma City is 12629 Olivine Terrace, OKC 73170.  We didn't think we would ever leave Tyler, but my company asked me to come help them out in our sales group.  I thought I would be able to give up the Dallas area, but that didn't happen.  I still will have to go there every two weeks or so, not a bad drive, just 3 Hrs.  Anyway we are now back to our roots in Oklahoma for time being.  I wasn't ready for all this wind and cool weather.  I had adjusted over the last 15 years to calm winds and great weather in Tyler.  The only real advantage to moving back here is we have two grandson's about 20 minutes away and the others are only 4 1/2 hours away in Kansas City.  My wife is in heaven being this close to the kid's.

Keep up the good work with the newsletter.  My e-mail has not changed.

The President and Gov. Romney Do “Standup”

President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney were within arm's length for the second time last week, as they shared the stage at the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner last Thursday and delivered feisty quips at each other's expense.

Donning tuxes at the elaborate event, a traditional election-year stop for presidential candidates, the two paused at the Waldorf Astoria for a night of comedic relief with less than three weeks to go in the already-bitter race.  If you weren’t fortunate enough to see their attempts at comedy in their entirety, here they are.  Settle back and enjoy!

Please note that after you have watched President Obama’s “performance” you will have to click on the link a second time and scroll down to the Romney installment.

If You Can’t Fix It with A Hammer, You’ve Got an Electrical Problem

This reminds us of something we heard recently:  The reason the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer is the rich keep doing the things that made them rich and the poor keep doing the things that made them poor.

This was written by a 21 year old female who gets it.  It’s her future she’s worried about and this is how she feels about the social welfare big government state that she’s being forced to live in!  These solutions are just common sense in her opinion.  This was in the Waco Tribune Herald, Waco, TX, Nov. 18, 2011.

Put Me in Charge

Put me in charge of food stamps.  I’d get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho’s, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away.  If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.

Put me in charge of Medicaid.  The first thing I’d do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal legations.  Then, we’ll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine.  If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, or smoke, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing.  Ever live in a military barracks?  You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair.  Your home will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried.  If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.

In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a “government” job.  It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you.  We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good.”

Before you write that I’ve violated someone’s rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary.  If you want our money, accept our rules.  Before you say that this would be “demeaning” and ruin their “self esteem,” consider that it wasn’t that long ago that taking someone else’s money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.

If we are expected to pay for other people’s mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices.  The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

AND while you are on Gov’t subsistence, you no longer can VOTE!  Yes, that is correct.  For you to vote would be a conflict of interest.  You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov’t welfare check.  If you want to vote, then get a job.
