From the Editor

What a whirlwind week.  Look forward to me going in many directions in this editorial.  I’ve been working “overtime” trying to educate myself on the “care and feeding” of RV House Batteries (those that run the lights, switches on refrigerator, the fan on the heater, and are the source for converting DC current to AC current through the use of a sine wave inverter when you do not have access the external AC current).  Over the 6 years we’ve had the RV I have successfully destroyed 4 sets of 4 batteries at a cost of about $120 each.  It seems that I am continually overcharging them boiling the battery acid out, ruining the battery and coating the battery tray with corrosion and the driveway with battery acid stains when I attempt to clean up the mess.  Well, it appears that for at least 4 years my inverter has been set for the wrong size battery causing the overcharging phenomenon.   Also, I find that I probably don’t really need to leave the charger on when I’m plugged into external power.  Well, the result of all this is, later this morning, I plan to “draw a line in the sand” and start over with a clean battery tray and 4 new deep cycle batteries that I now think I am prepared to manage properly.

This week has been partially consumed with an appointment each day to be “somewhere to do something.”  One of which was a “come to Jesus meeting” with the Service Manager and Parts Manager at Cowles Ford where we do service on our vehicles.  Two weeks ago we took 5 vans in for service over a two day period to have basically the same work done on all 5.  Carolyn transferred the expenses into our log books in each van only to find that we had been charged a different price for each van.  Over the 5, we were charged for 6 to 8 quarts of oil, two different prices for oil filters, and a different labor and shop supply charge for each van.  Oh, BTW, each van has exactly the same engine.  Needless to say, this astute accountant went into orbit, came home and started through past tickets entering the data into Excel spreadsheets.  Well, to make a very long story short--her “presentation” blew them away resulting in profuse apologies and questions as to what do you want?  I jokingly asked for a new pickup, which brought on a “thumbs down.”   Seriously, they did offer what we considered a fair settlement and the promise that the inconsistencies would not continue.  I don’t think it took them very long to understand that they were totally “out gunned.”  Bottom line, don’t try to “talk numbers” with Nana or, for that matter, with our daughter.

Additionally this week, I have been trying to power wash our driveway to make it look like someone lives here.  So far, I’m about ¾ there.  I can only do a few sections (in the shade) each morning until it gets too hot to work.  I think I “pressed the envelope” a little too hard yesterday and almost got overheated.  I have a chemical coming that should be here by Friday to help clean up the battery acid stains that have been left where the RV sits in the drive.  In addition to that clean up, I still have at least two more sessions to get the rest of the driveway washed.

On a technical note, I’m fighting with a dying cell phone that’s suffering from a failing screen and spending way too much time searching the internet for the next great piece of hardware.  These issues started on our last trip to Oklahoma when I dropped it in the middle of the street in “beautiful downtown Hobart, Oklahoma.”  Motorola says that’s not recommended if you don’t want stray lines and blobs on your screen that you’ll have to maneuver around.  It wouldn’t be so bad if I could just go buy a new phone (and I could as my contract is up) but I’m looking for the next “whiz bang” Motorola phone to “hit the street” or the current top performer to drop in price--neither of which has happened.

Beyond these “pressures of living” I have been humbled by other “real life” events going on in the life of my good friend Steve Cyrier who at 43 is in his 3rd year of battling cancer--a battle that I fear is nearing an end.  Steve is back in the hospital and not doing well.  He has significant breathing issues and has had his heart re-started this last week.  I have kept close contact with him and have probably sent up more prayer requests for him than anyone else in my lifetime.  I know that this means a lot to him.  I’m so torn at this point as I’m approaching the time that I’m not sure what to ask for.  My cousin Jennie Field told me that at some point we need to only pray for mercy and quit trying to “pray someone out of Heaven.”  The last time I tried to talk to Steve, he couldn’t talk for coughing, so I have relegated my communication to texting.  I asked him yesterday if he was up to company and he responded, “I’d prefer you wait.”  I now fear that the time I can visit personally my never come.  I also have concern for how alone he is.  I’m just not sure he has another connection to anyone else other than immediate family.  I can’t imagine the possibility of being so alone and so near to what may be the end.  My prayers are still going up, but with a very difficult, but what I feel appropriate “twist.”  Steve, I’m currently praying for God’s mercy for you and your family.  I love you guy…

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Interesting Tidbits

Stunt Pilot

This is a video of a stunt pilot who, in real life, is a Delta Airlines pilot.  His act at air shows is to pretend that he is a drunken spectator who rushes from the stands and jumps into a Piper Cub and takes off without any understanding of how to fly a plane.  The Piper Cub is actually specifically built to withstand an enormous amount of stress and has a very powerful engine.  This type of stunt is actually the most dangerous of air show acts, because of the low altitude at which the pilot performs.  Obviously, this pilot possesses unbelievable skill.  Check out the landing at the end—it is special!!

Lone Ranger Theme Song

You'll love this.  The masked man rides again (this is incredible)!  A standing ovation at Carnegie Hall for a musician playing a simple harmonica!  It took the Lone Ranger theme song (The exciting conclusion to Rossini’s William Tell Overture) to bring them to their feet.

Turn up the volume!  Click on the black box at the bottom of the video for full screen.  Enjoy!

Humor

To Hell with It!

My wife was screaming at me: "Leave! Get out of this house!" she ordered.  As I was walking out the door she yelled, "I hope you die a slow and painful death!"
So I turned around and replied, "So now you want me to stay?"

And that's when the pot hit me...

4 Husbands

The local news station was interviewing an 80-year0old lady because she had just gotten married for the fourth time.  The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband’s occupation.  “He’s a funeral director,” she answered.

“Interesting,” the newsman thought.

He then asked her if she wouldn’t mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living.  She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years.  After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her 20’s, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40’s, and a preacher when in her 60’s, and now—in her 80’s—a funeral director.  The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers.

(Wait for it.)

She smiled and explained, “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.”

SOME TRUTHS ABOUT HARRY

It would be nice to have another "Give 'em hell, Harry"!

Harry Truman was a different kind of President.  He probably made as many, or more important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other 33 Presidents preceding him.  However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House.

The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Independence, Missouri.  His wife had inherited the house from her mother and father and, other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives there.

When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year.  Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance' and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year.

After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves.  There was no Secret Service following them.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me.  You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me.  It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."

As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.

Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth.  Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices.  Political offices are now for sale.

Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, "My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician.  And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!"
