From the Editor

A few weeks ago I reflected back on my first experience at editing a newspaper which was only in print compared to this email newsletter.   Today I can report even more differences.  In those days there was no ability to change where the paper was issued.  Today, using email and the internet, it doesn’t matter where you are.  Just have your laptop with you and the ability to connect to the internet and bingo the newsletter can go out on time.  This issue of the Roosevelt News -- East Coast Edition is actually coming to you “live -- on location” from the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, GA.  We have our RV parked in the family campground ready to enjoy an exciting weekend with family and many friends we have met over the years here at the race.  Our laptops are up and running connected to the internet “hot spot” Mike has installed in the RV.  We continued to receive news items from our “reporters” after we arrived here yesterday so all is good and the issue will go out on time.

At least we hope it goes out on time.  Mike got a little over ambitious last week after noticing that the Reunion Registration Form included in the newsletter didn’t come out as it should have.  So he edited it and hit “send” to get everyone a better copy.  After several hours he realized that the second email didn’t go.  Upon checking with our email host, he found out that he had been blocked from sending emails as he had tried to send too many emails in one day.  Sending to the Newsletter subscribers twice on one day put him over the top on the number of emails he could send in one day without flagging the account as potentially sending spam.  Since we don’t believe the Newsletter is spam, he has spent several hours on the phone trying to get his account opened so he can again send a large number of emails.  That is supposed to happen so this one can go out on time.  So the moral to this story is that even though email is an easy way to communicate from any where to many people it still can have its problems.  That said, make note that if for some reason the “Roosevelt News -- East Coast Edition” does not show up in your email by the time you think it should, most likely it will already be online at http://www.234enterprises.com/RooseveltNews/newscenter.htm.

Well, I woke up this morning around 3:30 a.m. with what I thought was a great idea of something I wanted to add to the “From the Editor” section of the paper only to find that “the REAL editor” had already “stolen my thunder” and written my thoughts more eloquently than I ever could have.  GREAT JOB Carolyn!  After 41 years with her she still amazes me…

Remembering Ruby Fern Johnson

We’re so glad Ruby Fern is still with us and living in Tennessee.  She was an excellent teacher and worked tirelessly with us as she taught us Typing, Shorthand and Bookkeeping.  One of the students didn’t understand why “income” had to equal “outgo.”  I must admit, I struggled with it and never became a bookkeeper.

She put in many, many hours working with us as we learned our parts in the Jr. and Sr. Plays.  We remember the auditorium was always full as the Roosevelt people always supported the school.

Ruby Fern’s class her first year teaching at Roosevelt included my sister Jennie, followed by Frances and Shirley.  We were in the last class she taught at Roosevelt in ’55.  I remember she was excited about going to California.  However, much later she told us her happiest years were spent in Roosevelt.  In fact, not so long ago she would have loved to have moved back there.

It was good that the guys in class were required to take at least one year of typing as that came in handy much later on when everyone received a computer.  The typing and shorthand I learned in high school enabled me to get my first job in Oklahoma City as Ruby Fern had given us a test.  In July after graduating I received a letter to come to work for the State of Oklahoma.  That was a big surprise and relief as there were no jobs around Roosevelt or Hobart.  I continued working throughout most of our marriage and retired from Atlantic Richfield Corporation after 20 years.

She is an extremely strong person as she has faced numerous sad times and some health problems in recent years, but has always faced them bravely and “keeps on keeping on.”  I don’t know of a better role model.

We last saw her at the ’05 Reunion and have kept in contact with her by phone and e-mail for many years.  We wish her many more!

Ruby Fern taught my brothers, Durwood, Forrest, and Lonnis, and me.  Both she and her husband, Dewey, in a way, helped me to be a better person.  She not only taught me in school, but was also my Sunday School teacher and always had a smile on her face.

Having learned to type in high school enabled me to secure employment throughout my career and I retired from Amoco Oil Company after 38 years of service.

Dewey’s service station was next door to Durwood’s barber shop.  I would help my brother sweep the floors and shine shoes.  Then I would go over to Dewey’s service station to get a cold Root Beer.  Quite often, he would say I could have it for free.  We’d listen to the baseball games together.  Ruby Fern would bring his lunch and he would share with me.  Of course, Ruby Fern always had enough food for two.

I appreciate her encouragement throughout my life and wish her many years of happiness.

Thoughts from the Squirrel Lair

Ten principles to live by: (1) Guard your tongue. Always say less than you think and others will respect you. (2) Make promises sparingly, keep them faithfully, and people will trust you. (3) Never let an opportunity pass to say a kind word, and someday you will look back with joy and not regret. (4) Be genuinely interested in others; show it by listening attentively and expressing your appreciation. (5) Be cheerful. Don’t dwell on your aches and pains; everybody has trouble. There are people in the nearest hospital who would gladly trade places with you. (6) Keep an open mind and try to get all the facts. Discuss, but don’t argue. Learn to disagree without being disagreeable. Give other people the benefit of the doubt. (7) Discourage gossip, it’s destructive. (8) Be sensitive to the feelings of others. If you do, people will consider you to be wise. (9) Pay no attention to ill-natured remarks about you. Live so that nobody will believe them. (10) Don’t worry about getting the credit, just keep giving your best and be patient.

Auction

As the 2009 Newsflash which was sent out with the Reunion Invite and Registration form mentioned, there will be an auction again this year.  The auction is very important as that is the source of revenue to keep the Alumni Association functioning.  The past auctions have raised funds which enabled the Alumni Committee to make the decision to eliminate the $5 membership fees.  So as we approach the reunion, everyone needs to be thinking of items they will bring to auction.  You might be surprised how much one of your former classmates would like to have an item of yours.  We thought it might stir up interest if we could publish a list of items you are planning to bring.  So please email us a listing of any items you plan to bring, mmay@234enterprises.com.

We are looking forward to publishing the list beginning next week.

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

News

We have headed this section, “Local News,” in past issues.  As we thought about it, we decided that was not a good heading.  We want this section to be about anything anyone with ties to Roosevelt wishes to contribute to the news.  Regardless of where you now live, your friends are interested in you and your family and the activities you are engaged in.  So please send us information about you, your family, your activities, etc., for us to include in the “News” section of future issues.

From the May’s in Virginia

So to start, we decided to include a little of what has been going on in our lives the past week.  As we mentioned in the last issue, we definitely felt the earthquake and several of the aftershocks.  We now have survived Hurricane Irene with no damage other than lots of limbs, branches, and leaves scattered across our yard and pool, the clean up of which took several hours.  Thankfully, we did not lose power or have any structural damage.  (We want to thank so many of you who sent messages to check on us during this time.)  The other highlight of our week was our oldest granddaughter, Paige Musselman, going to kindergarten camp.  School doesn’t start in Virginia until Sept. 6, her 5th birthday in fact.  However, her elementary school holds a 3-day camp for incoming kindergarten students.  The first two days one of the parents can attend with the student.  The final day the student goes it alone.  They ride the “big yellow bus” just as they will when school begins.  We are happy to report that Paige liked camp.  She said the best part was riding the bus.  She also reported having “a new best buddy” but forgot to find out what her name was.  We are anxiously awaiting the reports when school begins for real.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

We have compiled all of the birthday and anniversary information we could from Wanda’s files.  We are sure we are missing some.  Please send us the birthdays and anniversaries for your family and friends so that we can have as complete as list as possible.  We are going to start with what we have from Wanda’s files so if we miss you, please send us the information so we have it for the news next year.  In addition, should any of the birthdays we list be wrong, also please let us know.

Happy Birthday To:

September 3 – Jennifer Moore

September 5 – Kathlene Niebruegge, 94 years young

September 6 – Reid Davis

September 6 – Paige Musselman

September 8 – Carolyn Hester Martin
September 8 – Alice Law

Happy Anniversary to:

September 8 – Cat & Madoline Coffman

Helicopter Ride

Harris and his wife, Esther, went to the State Fair every year, and every year Harris would say, “Esther, I’d like to ride in that helicopter.”

Esther always replied, “I know, Harris, but that helicopter ride is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50 dollars.

One year Esther and Harris went to the fair, and Harris said, “Esther, I’m 85 years old.  If I don’t ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance.”

Esther replied, “Harris, that helicopter ride is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50 dollars.”

The pilot overheard the couple and said, “Folks, I’ll make you a deal.  I’ll take the both of you for a ride.  If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a word, I won’t charge you!  But if you say one word, it’s 50 dollars.”

Harris and Esther agreed and up they went.  The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard.  He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word.

When they landed the pilot turned to Harris and said, “By golly I did everything that I could to get you to yell out, but you didn’t.  I’m impressed!”

Harris replied, “Well, I was going to say something when Esther fell out, but 50 dollars is 50 dollars.”

Mike & Carolyn,

Great job you all are doing on the Roosevelt News.  I laughed & cried on the story of Jerry Brown.  What a great guy.  Just wish that I would have had the opportunity to have known him longer.

On the birthday list Wanda at one time had mine, it is September 1.  If you don’t mind would you please add it to your new list?

Thanks again,

Tonya Burton

Dear Michael,

Thank you for the latest Roosevelt News.......

Your story about Jerry Brown brought tears to my eyes.  I did not know he had passed until recently.

So many good memories.  I can still imagine your home as well as the Brown’s, spent so much time at each one.  The one thing I seem to remember most about visiting you was the egg "x-ray thing" (not sure what it was called) in the basement and we would go down and look into the eggs (what were we looking for??????????).  Probably should not have been there.

I so look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion.  I have been searching through mother's pictures and hope to find some of our adventures to bring, especially the Sulphur campout.

Take care and watch out for the hurricanes!!
