Today, Wednesday the 20th
of June is the first day of summer and the weather in
It feels like we’re starting
to get our “hands around” most of the maintenance chores around the place--but
only by hiring some of the work done this year.
We hired all our mulch installed and have “neighbor Don” back trimming
all our plants--over 150 in all. He’s
going to come back and seal our deck at the house for us. I did power wash it myself. I’m sure that getting more help is something
that we’re going to see more of as we continue to age.
We pulled the RV out of storage
a couple of weeks ago and have started to put it into shape for what little
traveling we plan on doing this summer.
We’re a good month ahead of when we usually start checking out all the
systems to assure ourselves that they survived the winter and are ready to meet
our needs as it becomes our “home away from home.” Had a little A/C problem with the dash unit
and a rear tire that had a real slow leak.
Also took it over to Camping World at
Our little Paige has spent
her share of time in PaPa’s pool so far. Mark’s Mother brings her and her two cousins
that she keeps during the summer over most days to swim when Paige is staying
with her. She also usually brings the
cousins to swim when Paige is here with us.
I do enjoy having a place for the kids to swim in water that I know is
clean--because I keep it that way. I
know it’s much more sanitary than the public pools. For what it costs to keep it going I want it
to be used. We usually close the pool
right after Labor Day due to the leaves already starting to come down by
then. However, I suspect we’ll keep it
open an extra week this year as Kevin, Brenda, Raegan, and Parker are planning
on coming the week after Labor Day.
We’ve got to let those babies enjoy PaPa’s
pool before we close it.
I understand that our good
buddy, Jerry Hayslip now has “Jerry’s Place” (restaurant) open in the “Hanna House
Bed and Breakfast” in
The editors of the

a safe and enjoyable summer.

the Squirrel Lair
THEN CHOOSE HOW YOU START YOUR DAY TOMORROW
Michael is the kind of guy you love to hate.
He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to
say. When someone would ask him how he was
doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"
He was a natural motivator. If an
employee was having a bad day, Michael was there telling the employee how to
look on the positive side of the situation.
Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Michael and
asked him, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"
Michael replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices
today. You can choose to be in a good
mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.
I choose to be in a good mood.
Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to
learn from it. I choose to learn from
it.
Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining
or I can point out the positive side of life.
I choose the positive side of life.
"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested.
"Yes, it is," Michael said.
"Life is all about choices.
When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad
mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your
life."
I reflected on what Michael said. Soon
thereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him
when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.
Several years later, I heard that Michael was involved in a serious accident,
falling some 60 feet from a communications tower. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of
intensive care, Michael was released from the hospital with rods placed in his
back.
I saw Michael about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied,
"If I were any better, I'd be twins.
Wanna see my scars?"
I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind
as the accident took place.
"The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon
to be born daughter," Michael replied.
"Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two
choices: I could choose to live or I
could choose to die. I chose to
live."
"Weren't you scared? Did you lose
consciousness?" I asked. Michael continued,
"The paramedics were great. They kept
telling me I was going to be fine. But
when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the
doctors and nurses, I got really scared.
In their eyes, I read "He's a dead. I knew I needed to take
action."
"What did you do?" I asked.
"Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me," said
Michael. She asked if I was allergic to
anything. "Yes,” I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as
they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, "Gravity."
Over their laughter, I told them, "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as
if I am alive, not dead."
Michael lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing
attitude. I learned from him that every
day we have the choice to live fully.
Attitude, after all, is everything.
"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

Alumni Website
We have renewed the account that Wanda
Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the
Roosevelt Alumni: http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni. She had posted many pictures from past
reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about
them. We thought you might find these
interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.
Interesting
Tidbits
Important Information to Remember
Taking 5 minutes to read
this could save your life or a life of a loved one. These are things to do in an emergency
situation. It never hurts to be careful
in this crazy world we live in.
Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your
body. If you are close enough to use it,
do!
Learned this
from a tourist guide. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or
purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it
away from you…chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or your
purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
If you are ever thrown into
the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the
hole and start waving like crazy…the driver won’t see you, but everybody else
will. This has saved lives.
Women have a tendency to get
into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing
their checkbook, or making a list, etc.
DON’T DO THIS!) The predator will
be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the
passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE
DOORS AND LEAVE. If someone is in the
car with a gun to your head,
A few notes about getting
into you car in a parking lot or parking garage. A) Be
aware: look around you,
look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. B) If you are parked next to a big van, enter
your car from the passenger door. Most
serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the
women are attempting to get into their cars.
C) Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the
passenger side. If a male is sitting
alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or
work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. It is always better to be safe than sorry
(and better paranoid than dead).
ALWAYS take the elevator
instead of the stairs. Stairwells are
horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at night!
If the predator has a gun
and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN!
The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and
even then, it most likely will not be a vital organ. Run, preferably in a zig-zag
pattern.
As women, we are always
trying to be sympathetic: STOP, it may
get you raped or killed. Ted Bundy, the
serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who always played on the
sympathies of unsuspecting women. He
walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked for help into his vehicle or
with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
Another Safety Point: Some just told me that her friend heard a
crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police
because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her “Whatever you do, NO NOT
open the door.” The lady then said that
it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it
would crawl to the street and get run over.
The policeman said, “We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do,
do not open the door.” He told her that
they think a serial killer has a baby’s cry recorded and uses it to coax women
out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have
had several calls by women saying that they hear baby’s cries outside their
doors when they’re home alone at night.
Water Scam! If you wake up in the middle of the night to
hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a burst pipe, do not go
out to investigate. These people turn on
all your outside taps full blast so that you will go out to investigate and
then attack.
Stay alert, keep safe and
look out for your neighbors!

I still can't believe
it. I'll watch Channel 2 tonight at 10:00 p.m. to make sure it's not
a dream.
On last year's house,
we bought individual tickets, but this year we split the cost three
ways, planned to win, planned a sleepover (with sleeping bags) and today
we got the call that we had won! It is unbelievable!

Exercise
for People Over 60
Begin by standing on a comfortable surface where you have plenty
of room at each side.
With a 5-lb. potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight
out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute and then relax.
Each day you’ll find that you can hold this position for just a
bit longer. After a couple of weeks,
move up to 10-lb. potato bags.
Then try 50-lb. potato bags
and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb. potato bag in
each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I’m at this level!)
After you feel confident at
that level, put a potato in each bag.

To The Editors:
Sounds like a great life you
and Carolyn are able to live as "old folks.” Take advantage of
every second, every minute you can for as long as you can. It is
wonderful to be healthy enough at our age to enjoy retirement and be able to go
and do all the things you do. It is wonderful to hear about your travels
and visits to your family and all the places you
go and all the things you do. A lot of people can't because of health as
well as financial reasons. FLY, TOUCH THE SKY, DO EVERYTHING you can
while you can. See those grandkids as often as possible. They will
always remember you and will tell their children about the wonderful times you
had together. And if you haven't already done so, have that picture taken
of grandma and grandpa, at least an 11 X 14 (have it put on canvas) and see
that your grandchildren get one to look at everyday, to show their children. (I love putting wonderful
photos on canvas)
Stay healthy, stay happy and
please, stay mobile.

Mike & Carolyn,
As I heard of yet another death in the community of someone I
knew, I wished I could do something for the family. I did have the kitchen committee of the 1st
Baptist pick up some ham or chicken to serve and mailed a check. I also sent enough for the next 4-5 funeral
dinners to come. Betty Callen and Linda June know those that I know well and will
carry out my wishes. I wished that I had
thought of this a few years ago and thought maybe someone else might like to
make a contribution to the kitchen committee of the church. They tend to feed the families even if the
funerals are held elsewhere. I wish that
someone had suggested this to me before. I'm just not inclined to purchase
flowers for a funeral. I do love flowers
and prefer to give them to the living.
Keep up the good work. I
look forward to your online edition.
