From the Editor

Well, just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water--like “Jaws”--I’m back!  I must get back on the politics bandwagon.  Not really sure where to start on the events of the last few days--but.  First of all, I just can’t figure the recklessness of this President.  If you look back to his predecessor, he never took risky trips to a war zone without going in secretly, under the cloak of darkness, and being “wheels up” on the way back out before announcing where he had been.  Not this one, on the ground in Afghanistan outside Kabul at Bagram Air Base addressing the nation “Live.”  The most positive thing I can say about this is that possibly we have silenced al Qaeda more than I would have guessed or they would have taken a “crack” at him. Truly fortunate that he and “the big blue bird” got out in one piece.

Lastly, it irritates me to hear him “brag” over taking out Osama Bin Laden.  Absolutely, this was a good thing that all Americans are pleased over, but (and again this is my spin) SEAL Team 6 “took out” Bin Laden--not him.  I understand that they are very unhappy over the President touting this event as one of his “many” accomplishments in his political ads.  These guys aren’t necessarily upset over him taking credit, but prefer for their accomplishments to simply pass “under the radar” and not have attention brought to their unit or its accomplishments.  I do believe that if this talk for the purpose of gaining political advantage continues, you will hear more from “inside the ranks” as to how this really went down.  Let me elaborate.  Yes, he is the “Commander-in-Chief” and he does have the final word.  However, his decisions (yes or no) are most generally based on the advice of his closest advisors--the Joint Chiefs in instances such as this.  I purport that he was briefed by the Joint Chiefs--most likely Admiral Mike Mullen and/or Vice Adm. William H. McRaven, commander of Joint Special Operations Command (responsible for SEAL Team 6).  These men had information at their disposal to suggest that they could safely go into Pakistan, take Bin Laden out, and retrieve very beneficial information as to the future plans of al Qaeda.  With the credibility of these military leaders and their detailed intelligence, it’s most likely not as difficult to make a decision to “go or no go” as one might suspect.  Without question, the President got it right when he said go ahead.  So, yes he made the decision, but with a LOT of assistance as to what the chances were that a “go ahead” decision would end up being a good decision.  I personally feel that removing Bin Laden was a plus for all of America and should not be used as a divisive measure to attempt to segregate Democrats from Republicans.

NBC had a special Wednesday night on “Rock Center” detailing the events of the night that Bin Laden was brought down.  Although very informative and interesting, I’m afraid that there was purpose behind the White House allowing this documentary to be made--to again dramatize the actions of this President.  Two points really stuck out to me--the pains that were taken to “drive home” the fact that the President, basically ALONE, made the decision for this mission and that he did it when intelligence only indicated that there was a 50/50 chance that the “guy in the compound” was actually Bin Laden.  I can’t imagine undertaking such a dangerous mission knowing there was a 50/50 chance that they were going after the “wrong guy.”  I don’t believe this for a minute.  Trust me--they KNEW it was Bin Laden!  This is called drama and “spun” to portray the courage of our sitting President.  Thank you NBC for your continual effort at telling a story the way this administration wants it told.  You most certainly could be nominated for an Emmy for “Best Drama on Prime Time TV.”

Hard to keep up with all that’s going on and harder to sort out what’s right or wrong.  Sorry, just think this “spin” is “all wrong.”

Remembering

Looking for material for this section, I went to a copy of “Pioneering in Kiowa County.”  The following poem written by Louise Dale Nelson appeared in the front of the book.  I don’t recall seeing it before.  Louse was a very dear family friend and I have all of the books of poetry she wrote and she and her husband, George, published in their little print shop at their home.  I think we all would agree this poem is special to those of us who grew up in Kiowa County.  cnm

Recipe

Take a chunk of good red earth and trim it here and there,

Add some golden wheat ablowing then some cotton green agrowing,

Throw in some hayland and pastures where someone is grazing

Cattle they’re raising.

Sprinkle in a few towns like Hobart, Lone Wolf and Mountain View,

Snyder, Roosevelt, Mountain Park, Gotebo, too.

Now let me see, what is it was we lack?

Oh yes, some people, white, red, brown, and black.

But first we should stuff them as full as we can

With friendliness, warmth and love of their fellowman.

Now border with mountains to add to the view

And a river and lake make some happiness too.

Over it all spread a cover of sky, and chill for a season

With some snow ablowing

Then bake in a hot sun to help with the growing.

What shall we name it with all of this bounty?

We call it simply, Kiowa County.

Thought Provoking

This is a thought-provoking, one minute clip, full of wisdom and very brief.  It’s not a joke, it’s not religious, and it is not political.  It’s just. . .Special.  It has meaning for all of us.

The World Is Mine

Today, upon a bus, I saw a very beautiful woman

And wished I were as beautiful.

When suddenly she rose to leave,

I saw her hobble down the aisle.

She had one leg and wore a crutch.

But as she passed, she passed a smile.

Oh, God, forgive me when I whine.

I have two legs; the world is mine.

I stopped to buy some candy.

The lad who sold it had such charm.

I talked to him, he seemed so glad.

If I were late, it’d do no harm.

And as I left, he said to me,

“I thank you, you’ve been so kind.

It’s nice to talk with folks like you.

You see,” he said, “I’m blind.”

Oh, God, forgive me when I whine.

I have two eyes; the world is mine.

Later while walking down the street,

I saw a child I knew.

He stood and watched the others play,

But he did not know what to do.

I stopped a moment and then I said,

“Why don’t you join them dear?”

He looked ahead without a word.

I forgot, he couldn’t hear.

Oh, God, forgive me when I whine.

I have two ears; the world is mine.

With feet to take me where I’d go.

With eyes to see the sunset’s glow.

With ears to hear what I’d know.

Oh, God, forgive me when I whine.

I’ve been blessed indeed, the world is mine.

If this poem makes you feel thankful, just forward to your friends.  After all, it’s just a simple reminder that we have so much to be thankful for.

Give the gift of love.  It never comes back empty!

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

From the Email “Bag”

April 26, 2012

Dear Mike and Carolyn,

Just to let you know how important and appreciated the news is:  Yesterday I thought, "today's news day!  Yeah!"  Several times during the day, I came to the computer to read the news.  As everyone knows, it didn't come until today.  And, not to disappoint, it was another interesting and successful issue.

Thanks again for all your time and effort!  We all enjoy every word. . . wellllllllllll, I guess!  There have been a few comments from some that ruffle my feathers a bit; but, then I remember, everyone can't be as intelligent and informed as I.  (Now, that's a BIG LOL!)  We all have come from different times and experiences and don't always think alike.  Yet, still, I can't understand why there would be anyone that can't see that this nation is going down the wrong path, and quickly.  We must have change!  That said, our only hope is in prayer.  Political parties and people are not the answer.  Intervention by the Lord Jesus Christ is!

Stay encouraged.  Your work is not in vain.

Looking forward to next week's issue.

Marilyn (Morgan) Lester, Class of 1964

Editor’s Response to this email:  Marilyn, again thanks for all your encouraging words.  Sorry you thought Wednesday was "news day."  It's always sometime Thursday afternoon dependent on when we get it together. Again, thanks for all your kind comments.

Marilyn’s Response:  Oops!  Guess I was just like a little kid waiting for Christmas.  It can't get here quick enough!  Well, I always enjoy it no matter when it comes.

Thanks again,

Hi Mike got your news letter and as always enjoyed.  Some unsolicited advice, don’t gripe about the yard work, all to soon you will get too old to do it like I have and you sit and watch the guy you are paying to do it and you will think that wasn’t so bad.  Wish I were still able to do my own yard.  Have a good one.
