From the Editor

Guess everyone’s seen all the hoopla over the Space Shuttle Discovery coming to Washington to “nest” at the Smithsonian.  I had every intention of trying to catch a glimpse of the shuttle coming in, but did not get the opportunity.  I saw all the pictures on TV as I’m sure you did and it was quite a sight.  I still cannot comprehend carrying such a massive “ship” on top of a 747.

Not having any space travel program active at NASA most certainly is of concern to me.  I agree that it was time to stop the shuttle—just not the time to stop all space activities.  I so remember as child all the excitement over NASA, astronauts, and space travel.  It was a feel good, look what we’re capable of kind of thing.  As youngsters, it gave us some of our first real heroes--beyond Roy Rogers and Gene Autry.  It was indeed a good thing.

Additionally, I do feel for the hundreds, if not thousands across the country that have been put out of work with the virtual “shutdown” of most active NASA programs.  It would be hard to explain to a day laborer that one of these highly technical space program types losing their job is more important than them losing theirs--because it’s not.  However, it does irk me to see that kind of talent “put out to pasture” when we should still have a “horse in the space race.”  Hate to think that we can only now retrieve our people from the International Space Station with the assistance of the Russians.  That’s just “All Wrong!”

Well moving on, I have to again comment on a “burr” that is constantly “rubbing on my backside”--the news media.  None are reputable any more--FOX is too extreme to the right and we have no idea what truth there is in what the other liberal networks are reporting.  We can just bet that, on the liberal side, if it is negative to the President, they will “tread very lightly” and “spin” any “misdoings” of the administration in the most positive manner possible.  You can also bet that if they (the administration) had it to do over, they’d have used your tax dollars and mine to pay that Secret Service guy’s “hooker bill” to keep that out of the news.  You can be assured that the other’s involved would sure “like a piece of the guy” that didn’t pay up.  Unfortunately, hard to believe that there aren’t more similar situations that have already been “swept under the rug.”

In closing, I want to again point out that what I write here is my opinion.  My objective is not to change your opinion, but to give you something to think about.  Read it and think about it.  If it seems to make sense, do something about it in November.  If it doesn’t, just consider it as more ramblings from a “misplaced Okie” that’s been east of the Mississippi far too long.   You will notice in the “Email Bag” that we have a number of comments about our political views--some negative and some positive.  In fact the comments are running pretty much in line with current polls--this morning a New York Times poll shows President Obama and Mitt Romney in a dead heat.  That’s probably the way the comments should be.  However, if you don’t agree with my opinion (or even if you do), I would most certainly invite any of you to write a “Guest Editorial” on politics or any other subject of your choosing for us to publish--plenty of room for both sides of a “story” that is so vitally important to America and it’s future.  We’d love to receive your offering and present it to our readers.

As I worked to put the finishing touches on this issue of the Roosevelt News—East Coast Edition, I realized that today is April 19, the anniversary of the bombing of the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City.  I believe we should all take a few minutes to remember those lost on that tragic day.  I will never forget getting the news of this sad event.  I worked for the GAO (General Accounting Office at that time now known as the Government Accountability Office) and we had an office in the Murrah Building.  In fact, I had spent time working in that office in August, 1994, and January, 1995, so knew the GAO staff assigned there.  We, in Washington, D.C., anxiously awaited news from the Oklahoma City staff.  Several were seriously injured but none lost their life, a miracle considering the location of the office in the building and the loss of life all around them.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who survived and to the families of those who lost loved ones on that tragic day.

Remembering

One of our readers asked this week if anyone could confirm that Theodore Roosevelt ever went to Roosevelt.  I decided to see what I could find out about this.  The first place I searched was a copy of “Pioneering in Kiowa County,” a book published by the Kiowa County Historical Society of Hobart.  Below is an excerpt from that book.  I also found a similar story when I searched the internet.  I didn’t find any news articles about this.  cnm

“President Theodore Roosevelt’s trip to the town that was named after him was one of the highlights of the early days,” L. C. Cheuvront said.  He believes it was in 1903.

The President had heard of United States Marshal Abernathy, famous for his skill in catching coyotes alive.  Roosevelt wanted to see him in action, so he arranged the trip to Frederick.  He wanted to come to Roosevelt to see Charley Hunter, one of his “Rough Riders.”

The President rode into town on horseback, traveling from Snyder, where he had come by rail.  Cheuvront remembers President Roosevelt the way history books describe him, “just one of the fellows.”

Unlike the way Presidents travel today, accompanied by a retinue of Secret Service men, secretaries, reporters, etc., President Roosevelt traveled practically alone.  “He didn’t need guard,” Cheuvront said.  “He could have whipped half dozen men by himself.  Besides, no one wanted to kill Roosevelt.”  He made the trip on to Frederick by horseback, and Cheuvront was in the party which accompanied him.  Cheuvront remembers the hunt and how U.S. Marshal Abernathy, one of the best known marshals in the southwest, ran down coyotes on his horse, catching them with his bare hands.

Rough Weather

The Midwest experienced rough weather last weekend with over a hundred tornadoes reported in one day.  Unfortunately several lost their lives in a tornado that hit Woodward, Oklahoma.  Many of us across the country heard our hometown of Roosevelt mentioned on the Weather Channel as storm clouds blew through there.  The Roosevelt residents took the warning seriously as many found shelter in their storm cellars.  Thankfully there was no damage but it is always best to heed the warnings.  The storm season is far from over but we just hope that the country will be spared large, killer tornadoes.

Ride to the Airport

Billy Graham had just finished a tour of the Florida East Coast and was taking a limousine to the airport.

Having never driven a limo, he asked the chauffeur if he could drive for a while.  The chauffeur didn’t really have much of a choice, so he got in the back of the limo and Rev. Graham took the wheel.

He turned onto I-95 and accelerated to about 90 MPH.

Soon the blue lights of the State Highway Patrol flashed in his rearview mirror.

When the trooper saw who it was, he said, “Just a moment, please, I need to call in.”

The trooper radioed in and asked for the chief.

He said, “I have a REALLY important person pulled over and I need to know what to do.”

The chief replied, “Who is it, I hope not Ted Kennedy?”

The trooper said, “No, even more important.”

“It isn’t the Governor, Jeb Bush, is it?” asked the chief.

“No, even more important,” replied the trooper.

“It isn’t the President, George Bush, is it?”

“No,” replied the trooper, “even more important.”

“Well, WHO in the WORLD is it?!” screamed the chief.

The trooper responded:  “I don’t really know for sure but I think it might be Jesus, because his chauffeur is Billy Graham!”

I'm with Becky on the politics--I sure wish people in this country would learn to listen to each other and work together.    Why do some people have to be so mean-spirited?

I do have two Roosevelt-history questions:  (1) where was the Roosevelt football field? and (2) I'd heard that Teddy Roosevelt visited the town of Roosevelt, but can't find any news coverage of it.  He did visit Frederick once.  Can anyone confirm that he went to Roosevelt?

Personally, I can't think of any town in Oklahoma that's in a prettier setting than Roosevelt's.

I haven't really paid that much attention to your political viewpoints, it's just a good story when you write!  I don't always agree with what's written in the books I read, but I still read them because they're good books.  Just sayin.

Hi Mike,

You do have strong opinions--that's good.  My Dad was like that.  Just to clarify.... I am not at this time defending either party.  If you remember I said that the main problem is the division between, the constant bashing of the other and the total disregard for what is right for America.  I know it is much more complicated than that, but if both parties spent more time looking for win/win instead of getting their way we would all benefit.  Maybe we are toooooo far gone to ever let it be that simple.  Just so tired of politics.  So sad that none of them can truly be trusted.

Hi,

I wanted to add my two cents worth to the political discussions.  Do you know that we have 30 socialist in Congress?  They are in both Democratic and Republicans parties.  My suggestion is that people get off the party lines and figure out who they are actually voting for.  Check out the back ground of everyone they plan to cast a vote for, if you don't know who they are or what they stand for, don't vote for them.  I don't know about you, but the future for my kids and grandkids is far more important to me than any party affiliation.  I use to be a registered Democrat and years ago I change to the Republican party and that is how I am registered.  But I guess I am more independent than anything else, but that doesn't always allow you to vote in the primary - depends which state you are in.  I vote for who I think will best represent my country, has the most integrity, and will not make themselves wealthy at the taxpayers expense.  Honesty almost doesn't exist in the political arena these days.  It's - I'll say or do whatever you want to hear so I can get elected.  Pay attention, our country depends on it!

Just wanted to say I agree with 99% of your political views.  I have actually voted for a Democrat in my lifetime of voting.  I thought he was a decent man with morals.  But he was not tough enough for the job of President.... that being Jimmy Carter. He just had too much against him.

YES, YES women should be allowed in Augusta!!!  I do not think it has anything to do with "Old South" values.  It is men who do not want to believe woman are 1st class citizens.  They still have the mindset that women belong in the kitchen, pregnant and barefoot.  "Second class citizens."  And women who think they do not belong in places like Augusta or politics especially as President have been treated like they are second class.  Most of the younger women think they can be anything they want to be--they will be the ones who make the changes.  Makes me happy.

On another note.  Don't know if it a good thing or old thing.  But I got all of the answers correct on your little quiz (did not cheat and look at answers).   Freddy the Freeloader is the only one I actually had to think a few seconds on!!!  Am I old? or just "smart"!!!  haha

So excited to see how wonderful Parker is doing.  He is a cutie.  He decided 'I was early making my appearance in this world, I better get started now.. Gotta gain that weight I lost, so Feed Me.'  Your son and his family are beautiful and blessed.  Congratulations to all of you.

Trying to stay ahead of the tornados around here.  Had 5 fatalities in Woodward early this morning.  Sad to know this.  Over 130 tornadoes just last night from Oklahoma to Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa.  I had my close call with Friday's Norman tornado.  I was stuck in traffic and got to watch the tornado coming at me from Main Street all because I had 4 dogs outside in the backyard.  Weathermen told fibs--said the front wouldn't move in until dark thirty...  WRONG.  More damage in Norman than I thought.  At least no one was killed.

Do enjoy all of your stories and jokes...  You and Carolyn devote a lot of time to this newsletter.  I want you to know it is appreciated.

I want to extend my sympathy to the Merle Wilks family.  I did not Merle had passed away until I saw it in the newsletter.  I am saddened by the news.  Spent time at the Wilks home in Cold Springs when I was a kid.  Would bicycle from Grandpa Verns over to Cold Springs to visit Elaine and Gayla.  Merle was just a little tot.  Some fond memories of that.

You and Carolyn are going to have to get a new RV keep going back and forth to Georgia running the wheels off!!  Keep it up, love seeing your pictures and hearing the stories.

Ciao...

You know, Mike, I have done a lot of thinking about how you seemed to blast the Democrats (I happen to be a registered one) last week, also.  I admit I did not vote for Obama, not because he was African-American, but because he wouldn't profess to Christianity.  BUT, I think we didn't actually have a choice.  What I do think is that the administration before Obama sunk us so deeply into debt (after Clinton did so well trying to get us OUT of debt), Obama went into a hornet's nest.  We can't afford another person like Bush at this point!

Thanks,

Political Fodder

This is so eloquent in its brevity while painting a perfect picture of the whole situation.  EVERY member of Congress should have this posted above the inside of their office door.

"Witnessing the Republicans and the Democrats bicker over the U.S. debt is like watching two drunks argue over a bar bill on the Titanic."

You Could Hear A Pin Drop

At a time when our President and other politicians tend to apologize for our country’s prior actions, here’s a refresher on how some of our former patriots handled negative comments about our country.

These are good!

JFK’s Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early 60’s when de Gaulle decided to pull out of NATO.  de Gaulle said he wanted all U.S. Military out of France as soon as possible.  Rusk responded, “Does that include those who are buried here?”

de Gaulle did not respond.

You could have heard a pin drop.

When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of ‘empire building’ by George Bush.

He answered by saying, “Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders.  The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.”

You could have heard a pin drop.

There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American.  During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying, “Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done?  He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims.  What does he intend to do, bomb them?”

A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly:  “Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck.  We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?”

You could have heard a pin drop.

A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included admirals from the U.S., English, Canadian, Australian, and French Navies.  At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of officers that included personnel from most of those countries.  Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.  He then asked, “Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?”

Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied, “Maybe it’s because the Brit’s, Canadians, Aussie’s, and Americans arranged it so you wouldn’t have to speak German.”

You could have heard a pin drop.

And this story fits right in with the above…

Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane.  At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on.

“You have been to France before, monsieur?” the customs officer asked sarcastically.

Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.

“Then you should know enough to have your passport ready.”

The American said, “The last time I was here, I didn’t have to show it.”

“Impossible.  Americans always have to show their passports on arrival in France!”

The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look.  Then he quietly explained, “Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn’t find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to.”

You could have heard a pin drop.

I am proud to be of this land, AMERICA.
