From the Editor

Well, Carolyn suggested that I give politics a rest for a week after I received an email from an old and dear classmate (not referencing age--just how long we’ve been friends) suggesting that I seem to have it in for the Democrats.  Well, I’ll plead guilty to the fact that I most generally vote Republican.  In my lifetime I have never, in a Presidential race, seen my way clear to vote for a Democrat.  However, in most cases I was voting against the Democrat rather than for the Republican.  For the record, I have absolutely no issue with people who have Democratic views.  It’s a free country and as Americans we each are guaranteed freedom of choice.  I admit however, that I do have serious issues with President Obama.  Bottom line, I actually have few concerns over what he says--it’s what he doesn’t say and what he does that none of us know about (thanks to the liberal press) until he’s already done it and it’s too late.  I simply don’t trust him.  Ok, I’m done.

I’ll now move on to the “burr that’s currently under my saddle”--the “Masters” refusal to allow women into the “Augusta National Golf Club.”  I have family in the Augusta area that are golfers and very much in tune with the “goings on” at Augusta.  I have had long time respect for the beauty of the course and the work that goes into caring for it.  Few realize that they actually heat the soil or apply dry ice around the plants to assure that the azaleas will be in full bloom at the time of the Masters and allow little to no play on the course for months in advance of the tournament.

I recently “got on my soapbox” on Facebook and expressed my views over the exclusion of women and “raised the hair on the back” of my cousin’s wife down there.  She commented, “I can’t believe you went there.”  I had an opportunity to see her earlier this week and she told me, “Gona’ say this once and I’m done--Women have no right to be on the battlefield, in the White House, or at Augusta!”  Very interesting view.  I seriously don’t know if this view is a “hold over” from the South of the past and if it is widespread or just the view of my cousin.  I most certainly know that the “no women in golf at Augusta” portion is the unflappable view of the “Augusta National Golf Club.”

I saw this discussed last week on “Morning Joe.”  Andrea Mitchell who was on the show that particular day was outraged at the exclusion of women at Augusta and called for this practice to be addressed and altered immediately.  Willie Geist commented, “The part you don’t understand is that they JUST DON’T CARE!”  Some 10 years ago CBS told Augusta that they were losing so many sponsors (because of the exclusion of women) that they weren’t sure they were going to be able to televise the tournament.  The response from Augusta, “No problem, we’ll pay for it ourselves.”  The issue has basically been dormant since then until this year when it was again brought to the forefront with IBM being a major sponsor and their CEO being a woman.

I personally feel this is SO WRONG!  I have a little history with the treatment of women.  Carolyn has a Masters degree in Accounting (as well as a BS in Accounting and Business Education).  At the time she got her Accounting degree, “Accounting” was “a man’s world only discipline.”  It was difficult for her to gain acceptance in what had historically been a field for men only.  I felt her pain with the exclusion that she experienced--until she proved her competence.    In my career I worked with many good, competent women capable of holding their own, if not exceeding the performance of any man.  Yes, you bet, my wife is one of those!   If at 66 she decides that she’d like to take up golf (and somewhere get the money to join “Augusta”)--she should without question be allowed to receive an invitation and participate.

Augusta, wake up and come out of the stone age SOON before your former supporters justifiably tell you what you can do with that “Green Jacket.”

Thoughts from the Squirrel Lair

Even though it is the week after Easter, we believe there is a message here.

All I Need to Know I Learned from the Easter Bunny

This is the first day of the rest of your life.  Make it a day of love and laughter.

All I need to know I learned from the Easter Bunny!

Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket.

Everyone needs a friend who is all ears.

There’s no such thing as too much candy.

All work and no play can make you a basket case.

A cute tail attracts a lot of attention.

Everyone is entitled to a bad hare day.

Let happy thoughts multiply like rabbits.

Some body parts should be floppy.

Keep your paws off of other people’s jelly beans.

Good things come in small, sugar coated packages.

The grass is always greener in someone else’s basket.

To show your true colors, you have to come out of the shell.

The best things in life are still sweet and gooey.

May the joy of the season fill your heart.

Alumni Website

We have renewed the account that Wanda Jackson had set up at the photo sharing website, picturetrail.com for the Roosevelt Alumni:  http://www.picturetrail.com/rooseveltalumni.  She had posted many pictures from past reunions, class panels, and old schools buildings along with write ups about them.  We thought you might find these interesting if you haven’t visited this site in the past.

Get Well Soon Randy

We want to send our best wishes to Randy Jackson who we understand was rushed to Oklahoma City where he had a stint (or stints) inserted after he suffered a heart attack.  Last word we had is that Randy is back home and resting comfortably.  We most certainly wish him a speedy and complete recovery.

Home Again

We (the editors) are home again in Virginia.  It is so good to be back to our normal routine—if you can call it that.  After 17 days away, we have lots of catching up to do.  We so enjoyed our time with our Georgia kids and especially Raegan and Parker.  We are anxiously awaiting another visit with them in a very short few weeks.  Paige, our Virginia granddaughter, was so glad to see us and us to see her.  What a joy when she tells us “I love you” without being prompted and we have heard that several times since arriving home.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

We have compiled all of the birthday and anniversary information we could from Wanda’s files.  We are sure we are missing some.  Please send us the birthdays and anniversaries for your family and friends so that we can have as complete as list as possible.  We are going to start with what we have from Wanda’s files so if we miss you, please send us the information so we have it for the news next year.  In addition, should any of the birthdays we list be wrong, also please let us know.

50th High School Reunion

He was a widower and she a widow.  They had known each other for a number of years being high school classmates and having attended class reunions in the last 20 years without fail.

This 50th anniversary of their class, the widower and the widow made a foursome with two other singles.

They had a wonderful evening, their spirits high.  The widower throwing admiring glances across the table.  The widow smiling coyly back at him.

Finally, he picked up courage to ask her, “Will you marry me?”

After about six seconds of careful consideration, she answered, “Yes, yes I will!”

The evening ended on a happy note for the widower.  But the next morning he was troubled.

Did she say “Yes” or did she say “No?”

He couldn’t remember.  Try as he would, he just could not recall.  He went over the conversation of the previous evening, but his mind was blank.

He remembered asking the question but for the life of him could not recall her response.  With fear and trepidation he picked up the phone and called her.

First, he explained that he couldn’t remember as well as he used to.  Then he reviewed the past evening.  As he gained a little more courage he then inquired of her.  “When I asked if you would marry me, did you say ‘Yes’ or did you say ‘No’?”

“Why you silly man I said, ‘Yes, Yes I will.’  And I meant it with all of my heart.”

The widower was delighted.  He felt his heart skip a beat.

Then she continued, “And I am so glad you called because I couldn’t remember who asked me!”

So glad little Parker is doing good!  We will keep praying for him!!!  Does anyone remember the Toby and Susie magic show?  I think it came to town once a year, they had a big tent.  And there was another man and his wife with them.  The other man played the organ.  I got to go a few times.  Think I remember them selling cotton candy and things like that.  Toby had my brother Norwood bring one of our cats over there, (it was by the High School), any way that cat carried that coke bottle.

Mike you and Carolyn are awesome, keep up the good work!!!!

I'm amused and entertained by the things you chose to publish today.  Our views on politics are very similar and lately in Florida I'm having a hard time finding people who share my views.  One lady 2 doors down spent over $400,000 on her home in 2006 and many upgrades since, she paid $220,000 down.  She is working the same place she worked in 2006 and has never been laid off but thanks to a new program this administration has implemented her house payment has gone from $1500 a month to $400 and she says "Thank God & Thank Obama."  She blames Bush for MAKING her pay so much for a home whose value fell.  She just purchased another home in Winter Haven and is remodeling it with the $50,000 she had in savings.  Thank God for the taxpayers bailing her out.  I don't like that much because even though I'm retired, I am still a taxpayer.  I purchased a rental home in 2004 that is worth much less than when I purchased it, but that's the chances you take.  I plan to hold onto it until home prices go back up but there is no guarantee and I don't need or want taxpayers taking on my burden.

Oops, guess I'm venting just a little. lol

Hi Mike,

Read your political articles each time and I have to say you do have a strong opinion mostly and always against the Democratic Party.  Glad to see that you do see some fault on the other side.  I believe that both sides have lost sight of what is right for the majority of Americans.  Sad state of affairs.  Just remember it takes both parties working together to make a strong nation.

Congrats on the new grandson. Looks like a keeper.
